What are your unpopular opinions in pokemon?

I love the CGI pokemon cards and I think the shitty aged CGI is a huge part of their charm. Its nostalgic and makes them interesting. I remember thinking that CGI was cool as hell as a kid. Also, expedition charizard is one of the most unique zard cards because of it. One of my favorite in my collection.

Most evolution in the anime is used to show that through struggle and perseverance, hard work pushes us to become something greater. But Pikachu’s refusal to evolve in the anime is supposed to teach us that we don’t always need to change ourselves to achieve what we want. It tells us staying true to oneself, developing a strong sense of will and sheer determination are all more valuable than raw strength or ability. Pikachu foregoes physical evolution in favor of spiritual evolution. Real life isn’t so literal, but the point is like Pokemon, humans can evolve themselves too.

Sometimes I write what my opinion is on here so that I have something good to read.

Set collecting, artist collecting, every card of a specific pokemon collecting, etc, all force people to get at least 1 card they wouldn’t normally be interested in owning. I don’t necessarily understand the appeal to completing things like this. If you “have to” get something to complete a collection instead of “wanting to” that doesn’t seem very fun to me.

Completing one of the 3 sets you described above IS the fun in it. There are certainly going to be a couple cards in a set that are not as appealing as others, but it’s part of the game.

If I only added my favorite Eeveelution cards, then I would have a 90% complete set. At that point, get the last 10% and make it complete.

If making it complete outweighs you forcing yourself to get 10% of a set you don’t want / aren’t your favorite, by all means go for it. I don’t get any joy from buying cards I don’t want just for the sake of “completeness”

Jungle & Fossil are banger sets! I know people say they were printed to oblivion, but I can’t find any proof. Their simple OG artwork is so good!

Imagine buying items for your collection that, not for investing, but for your collection, that you don’t feel all too confident about.

  • Typhlosion > Charizard
  • Vending series does a better job at showcasing the og Pokémon better than base set - fossil, except people underrate the set because it has no holos.
-Japanese cards will ALWAYS look better than their western counterparts.
-Special delivery promos and futsal promos are lame and a lazy attempt at the coolness of japanese exclusive promos.

PSA 9 collections are lame. If you have a collection goal, go for PSA 10. If that is out of your budget then get minty raw cards instead. Otherwise you’ll always look at your PSA 9s and wish they were 10s.

lol.

This is very unpopular! I’ve seen 10s that are in worse condition than 9s. The difference between a 9 and 10 is so minimal and not worth the 2x, 5x, 20x premium that 10s bring. I’d rather have 100 9s than 10 10s. Actually would rather have 1,000 mint raw cards. This is speaking for a collection, not for investment purposes

Basically “don’t collect anything other than a 10 because you’ll wish you had a 10”?

i aim to offend

and yeah this thread is second only to the secret santa thread on e4. please please never close this thread.

do we agree perhaps? for a collection, getting mint raw is awesome because you can binder them all or put them all in card savers and hold them + flick through them in your hand. Otherwise, going for PSA 10 because that would be the “ultimate” collection goal. Personally for me, a psa 9 collection will always making me feel wanting, but choosing between a mint raw or psa 10 collection makes sense.

Maybe i’ll change my mind as time passes, I certainly have before!

Let me know if you can tell the difference between the two if I covered the grades while I save 300%+ for the same card

Yes, NM/Mint binder collection over anything PSA all day!

  • Unless you think the card is getting a 9 or above, there is no reason to pay extra for subgrades. No one cares what the subs are for a CGC 6.

  • Should be allowed to necro post. Bringing up topics from the past can be fun, useful and insightful.

CGC and BGS slabs without subgrades feels like it is missing something, looks off balanced.
Unless the card is high end, sending in a 6 quality card to get graded should only be for a personal collection anyways. People that got subgrades on played cards for resale are all the new people who jumped in during Covid thinking they will make bank. Those people are about to lose a ton of money on Pokémon when the backlog of grading frees up.

Fully agreed.

One caveat though, some of these companies don’t post how the subgrades affect each other so you’re only way of discovering how they work (beyond guesstimating or trawling through 1000s of “I think this matters more but I’m not sure”-posts on forums) is to actually see them in practice.

The only companies that matter weigh subgrades similarly, but I just recently had an experience with one of the few companies I believed may hold some promise (or at least the tech behind it) and it was very informative to see the subgrades on a lower graded card.
