Love the idea. But I would hate it when they start designing cards that are no longer tournament legal.
The game has to be able to be played unsleeved without knowing which card is which. Special backs are marked cards, and yes I know tournament rules force you to sleeve up in non-transparent back sleeves, but just no.
Well it doesn’t help that Pokemon themselves have made 90% of the cards in the set worthless.
Holos are treated like dirt, doesn’t seem like anyone is excited about Vs or VMAXes so then you’re chasing what? Basically secret rares, of which you’re not even guaranteed any in a booster box lol.
And say they do get a SR, but then it’s a gold item lmao. Maybe kids are tricked by rainbows? They look like trash though.
Back then, ‘hits’ had the same definition between collector and distributor, now ‘hits’ exclude holos, so it’s like 1/4 instead of 1/3 of a box. And that is counting Vs worth $1 and VMAXes worth $2 lol.
If you find the back of the cards boring, you kno what card did do the unconventional and had a unique back? It certainly wasn’t an underrated one. Hell, it makes most of the artist collaboration cards appear tame and conformed by comparison.
Was going to post this in the BDSP thread, but figured it would be better off here.
Sinnoh is such a garbage region. There is little to no variety in the regional dex, many of the “new” Gen 4 Pokemon are just additions to evolutionary lines that already existed, you can’t even get some of the new Pokemon until late in the game or postgame, there is only one freaking Fire-type in the wild (a boring Ponyta) and you spend much of your time running into Kanto Pokemon, many of which are the maddening trade evolutions (Abra, Gastly, Geodude and Machop are all in the dex).
Easily the worst region of all-time, in my opinion.
Sets are also now 4 times bigger than back when I cracked open Base Set packs at that age. And even back than, the sets were filled with junk. Unless you had one of the 16 holofoils you were unhappy. Nobody cared for Lass, Clefairy Doll or Pokémon Trader. Hitting a non holo rare or trainer equalled to pull w/e junk you pull now. But unless you were a scumbag that begged his (grand)parents for a scale to weight packs at the counter you didn’t knew what you would get until you opened the pack and passed the 7th card in the pack. And getting a Ninetales, a Magneton or Poliwrath was still considered not getting a hit.
The rarity has been deluded, but the feelings are still the same. And many of the rushes, the feelings and everything that is connected to pack opening is being reduced to nothing due to “influencers” and their tricks, as well as the code card.
I got my little nephew a tin last christmas. When he was opening it, he was excited to get pokemon he liked as cards, even if they were just commons. He was also far more excited for the scizor V he got rather than the gold card he also pulled. So glad he hasn’t been jaded from pokemon youtubers.
I think Sinnoh was the generation to break many devotees since the beginning at the time, although I am speaking on my own behalf. HGSS did recover this and some, but not all of DPPt’s TCG help but it was at increasingly lower rate of quality. The boarders and layout are as uninspiring as you can get. HGSS reversed all of it’s problems.
I’ve come to appreciate a fair amount of the extended previous gen mons over times mainly in other formats, but hardly for their looks. Definitely a 50/50 gen.
Kids and the hobby are being damaged because they are not enjoying the experience in the same way you did? Heavy boomer vibes.
What makes the hobby so strong is the shared experiences we all had whether it was holographic charizord making you king of the playground or believing Mew lived under a truck. Young kids now have different kinds of shared experiences, often driven by YouTube content. Let them do their influencer pack trick or look at the code cards. The only thing more cringe than the pack trick is believing that it somehow erodes some arbitrary purity of the hobby.
Not really. A majority them just have less interesting poses/scenes or art styles compared to what we got in Cosmic eclipse. VMAX Climax has gone for a more calm/relaxed theme with the CHRs, which is okay but I’m not into it much.
A majority of them just don’t interest me.
