What are your unpopular opinions in pokemon?

I think the lore behind the cards is what makes them awesome, and they’re nice representations of the pokemon snap game. I wish they would do more contests and stuff like that nowadays because I really think the snap cards were a cool promotion. Just a shame that they were so extremely limited

I understand it’s history. I know the artwork came from the game but I don’t find them visually appealing at all.

…and that’s understandable. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

But I think it has something to do with you being very young at that time as well. If you were gaming for a while back then, the mainstream shift in the 90s to 3D graphics was HUGE. Most of the older generation look with rose tinted glasses at the low poly count, the jagged edges and the crude representation of Pokémon, because at that time we couldn’t even fathom smooth surfaces in games.

But I bet to a younger generation, this just looks like ass.

Hmm maybe I’m only seeing it through my own eyes as I never liked the snap game and was a 90s kid. I guess when you are older you can appreciate these things more but as a kid you don’t contextualise everything. Anyway, I reserve my rose tinted glasses for GTA Vice City. Now there’s some polygons I can get excited about

I believe this is pretty unpopular opinion, so here it is; I’m fully against cracking open any graded cards even if they are low grades… the only thing that is ok with me is resubmitting them in their cases if they are hugely misgraded and nothing else

Here is another one: PSA set registry is lame AF.

Graded packs are underrated and actually look pretty damn nice when treated with care during the encapsulating process.

Pokemon as a collectible will die within our lifetimes.

I don’t even know what this opinion would classify as… probably more as a ‘well yeah obviously that’s a possibility’ opinion than an unpopular one lol

I don’t think the majority here expected pokemon to be a 20+ year thing in the first place, and you’re throwing out there that the collectible aspect of it could die out in 40++ years… well yeah it could :stuck_out_tongue: how many franchises realistically entertain people for over half a century? Not many

It better not die within my lifetime lol.

It’s only a matter of time until an influx of cards with forged signatures on them enters the market which are indistinguishable from a real auto.

If they keep adding new Pokemon with every new game, new mechanics that only affect a small % of the Pokedex and only favour the Top 20 Favourite Pokemon the game will die out. Especially if they do not release a full new Pokemon Stadium like game. The Sword/Shield game is already a major let down for many fans because they’ve cut Pokemon, and no new cosmetic style been applied like e.g. new (battle) animations.

Unless they decide to revisit e.g. Kanto or Sinnoh in a new setting (not a remake) and an extended post-main story game play (visiting other regions) and more interaction with other players over the internet (the long desired/demanded MMO feature) the Pokemon franchise will shoot itself in the foot, going into a 202X down slide like the early 2000’s.

It’s only a matter of time some smart kids are able to construct a robot that is able to make genuine pencil/brush strokes and is able to imitate any signature pixel perfect. But we’ll see that on a Michael Jordan card or something else sports related first. Pokémon is to little for that.

it’s already happened, and in every hobby. even companies like PSA can misidentify real/fake autos and there isn’t much that can be done about it.

it’s only a matter of time for everything until technology advances to the point where fakes are indistinguishable from the real thing. the only real advice to go by is to receive the cards yourself, or from a trusted party. (but even then, we can look at Rusty who unknowingly had a sealed 1st edition booster box in his personal collection.)

PSA set registry only works when the cards you have are from a pre-defined set. There is no Pichu set, or PCG-P promo set, so if I want to use their set registry system I end up with cards placed in about 70 different sets. To me, that is definitely "lame “AF”.

But hey, I wasn’t here to reply to anything, no no, I was here to say that I think signed cards are basically defaced and I’d much rather have a very poorly-graded unsigned card than a mint signed card.
