I think we can agree that this forum is made up of some of the biggest, most serious, and knowledgeable collectors in the hobby. But I find many of us at times become out of touch with your average collector. Your average collector doesn’t buy PSA graded cards or 1st edition base cards. And they don’t think about the “investment” aspect of cards.
I guess my unpopular opinion is that many of us, including myself, are too quick to be dismissive of certain cards because of what set they are from or because they’re not mint. Your average collector doesn’t think about any of these things. Just because a card isn’t going to make you money doesn’t mean something is wrong with it.
Most of our activity are guests/lurkers. I know it can be intimidating to post, but people should feel free to do/ask whatever they want. If others have ideas for more accessible threads feel free to make or suggest them!
Interesting! I’ve always felt exactly the opposite (which I’m guessing you would acknowledge most people think given that you’re posting this in the unpopular opinions thread ).
Admittedly it’s weird, because Wizards make a conscious decision to change the cards from Shadowless to Unlimited, suggesting they saw Unlimited as an improvement. But I’ve always felt like it was a downgrade. When I look at Shadowless I see much more vibrant and consistent coloring compared to Unlimited, which often looks washed out to me.
Take a look at the Gyarados for example:
The Shadowless Gyarados has those vibrant colors, while the Unlimited Gyarados looks whiter / washed out.
I could use more examples, but that generally captures how I feel about the difference.
As a Gyarados fan, I have to disagree. Unlimited looks better. But that’s only because I think the colors are more even, richer, and add more dimension than Shadowless. Shadowless looks kind of gaudy in my opinion. Colors look too intense on the art while the rest of the cards is muted.
I always thought it would be cool to see the unlimited Gyarados artwork with the shadowless layout. Im sure someone with photoshop skills could make it happen. I prefer that 1st Ed/shadowless layout. It looks so nice to me.
I couldn’t disagree more. I know for a fact that the majority of our high end collectors here love collectors from every level. In fact, we go out of our way to lift them up because the success of the hobby we all care so much about depends on those collectors coming up. Heck, a big part of the E4 philosophy is to help and inform the newer people.
All snap cards are ugly and if I was spending that much money I would want something that looks half decent in my collection. They just remind me of an old 3d generation software program called Kahootz! that we used to play around with in year 9 and 10 at school in the '00s.
