Started grading cards about a year ago with the intention of selling off some cards to help off set the price of the cards I’m keeping. Its been 1 year of grading, around 600 cards graded so far. Over 100 of them scored a PSA 10, and I have only sold 2 PSA 10’s so far. Sorry for dumping all my 8’s and 9’s on ebay.
Hmmms so heres the things. I spend alot of times on things, and then if theres something I really want… ILL SACRAFICE all the time i spent on the things to get the other thing i want.
Many would criticize your style. I don’t.
Collecting is more entertainment than anything else. It’s the chase for most. It’s the completion of a goal for others.
For you it’s the next big thing.
Whatever floats your boat…is the best way to go.
Not next best things… Just whaat is the biggest best appeal to me personally… Like no raritan. see, I had to settle for engfrish charizard as a japanes collector, because I watched the no raritans never go past a 6, and then they got 10’s … SO hope was back, and pokesynds mind started to get a bit uneasy inside. So bye bye everything. xD
But I like that you dont look down on the things… this is one of many things and reasons that your one of my best friends garinson.
and If anyones wondering, I plan on getting all the sacrificial cardlings back once this venture is done.
In all seriousness though, it’s not something I’m ashamed of but at the same time I don’t go proclaiming to the world that I collect children’s trading cards either.
I made the mistake of telling someone once and now my identifier is the Pokemon guy.
I don’t take offense to it, but I know when someone new enters my life, especially at work, that it’s always just a matter of days before someone tells them I collect and sell Pokemon cards. I don’t think I’ve ever brought it up, it always gets brought up for me whether I want it to or not.
It’s the same sequence of events every time too. If I’m around when it’s brought up they’ll look at me weird. I can’t read minds but if I had to take a guess they’re either thinking, nerd, loser, lives in mothers basement, or some other negative. I’ve never seen a that’s awesome look, or he’s my new hero look, or anything of the sort.
Currently, I don’t have to say anything to get to the next step. When it first started happening I would have to “defend” myself and “justify it” because for whatever reason society says adults can’t play with “children’s toys” unless they have children themselves. The easy way to do it was to show them my sold page on eBay. I don’t have to do that anymore, because the same people that tell them why they call me the Pokemon guy also tell them what the cards sell for (with many over exaggerations).
This leads to the final part, the approach and ask me to evaluate their collection that’s been in storage for 20 years, they know a family member that has a bunch of cards, or that they know they used to have this really rare card and they wish they held onto it because it’s probably worth thousands now…
It never ceases to amaze me how many people will give me the “nerd” look and not 10 min later tell me their personal connection to Pokemon and actually want to have a minor conversation about the cards, or at least the money aspect of it.
I’m an animator so pretty much everyone I interact with is pretty nerdy haha, they love seeing the pokemon stuff. I’ve maintained a cool nerd vibe miraculously for quite a long time with the rest of the people in my life. It’s all in the confidence
None of us should be ashamed of our hobby and/or our passion. You want to know if someone is insecure? They’ll make fun of other peoples hobbies because they either have none or are ashamed of their own.
All of us have had the ‘Well I have old cards they must be worth heaps’ conversation. It’s no different to when people find out you are x or y profession. If people are showing sincere interest it’s a really good thing.
If someone tries to belittle you for it then don’t even waste your time trying to justify it. They don’t deserve your time.
Its worth one thing… You should probably try and convince that dick to not look down on others, to prevent future dick moves. Which will make the world a better place xD
Hey! I have some old cards could you take a look at? I’m pretty sure I even have a charizard! Oh whats 1st edition? What a little stamp not on mine makes mine only worth $50.
Later that night
Hey I was looking through my cards and I have a machamp with that 1st edition stamp! How much is that worth!?
Why? Is it a money thing? As in worrying you’ll be robbed if they know the value, or a shame thing? The first is semi valid but I really hope it isn’t the second. No sense being embarrassed about what you enjoy. Anyone who would belittle you for it isn’t worth your time.
They mite not be worth your time but if they work with you they get your time anyway. Sometimes who you are around isn’t a simple choice.
I personally don’t go round telling people at work i collect cards, but i dont tell them i compete in ultra endurance triathlons either, i just keep my business to myself and avoid all the hassle.
I guess I am lucky then. I work with a bunch of 20 something and early 30 something guys. When they found out, they were really interested and shocked it was still around. Some of their kids are getting into it now that they found out I can get them packs and stuff for below retail. Some of them have actually been interested in the generations collections and I have been selling those to them. I normally sell just on eBay but its easy to give a big discount to any friends and family that get into it.
I can see keeping personal matters to ones self as I tend to do too… It’s just a shame if you have to actively hide it. They are two different things. I don’t go around actively offering up the fact that I collect Pokemon cards and buy/sell them, but it comes up from time to time and some co workers have been over to my house for various parties/get togethers. I don’t try to hide it at all. My eBay stuff takes up half my basement about so over time its fairly certain anyone that comes over will notice. Also I have a few CL ads that have actually been answered by friends, people from high school etc.
