What are your faults?

We could all use some humility once in a while. What are your faults when it comes to collecting and your personality associated with collecting Pokemon cards?

I sometimes can be very impatient when I am waiting for packages or PSA results. Not the mild anticipation and excitement that everyone gets, I feel like I can probably be quite annoying.

Sealed Boxes are not safe around me unless I already have most or all the chase cards inside. This is really bad because I end up paying more money for cards that I want.

My biggest would be my lack of knowledge about anything post 2003

my younger brothers show me cards from the newer sets and im constantly baffled, im like ‘is that seriously a pokemon?’ lol

Not enough knowledge from Gen 4 sets. I try to browse bulbapedia articles once in a while but that doesn’t usually last too long.

Other things that were problem in past:

  • starting new collections even though I hadn’t finished the ongoing one
  • preordering SR/UR from new sets too early, I surely learned that lesson with Bandit Ring when I paid $70 a piece for shiny M Rays only to realize few days later the pull ratios were far more generous than before

Don’t fret about that first one @milhouse. Being anxious about grades is perfectly normal. As a person who submits for many people it’s completely normal as all my submitters are just like you are >_<

I think my fault is that I can often be perceived as very blunt and that can come across as rude/arrogant. It stems mostly from my career as I don’t suffer fools and can’t tolerate simple mistakes (even though I make them all the time).

If I could, I would try and make myself come across more calm and collected.

Many people seem to love collecting the Neo Sets and the E-sets, but those are actually the sets that are the most unknown to me. The Gym sets are quite unknown for me as well. I know most of the holos and I know all the crystals and shinings but that’s it basically. When those sets were new it was so difficult to find TCG cards in here from anywhere where I live so I think that’s where it comes from for me. I only really started to buy TCG cards around the time when Ex Emerald was new as the cards started to appear again. Oh and I hate the fact that when I was younger I used to reorganize my binders so often that my ex-series cards really aren’t grade worthy. I also didn’t see the card condition the same way back in the day as I see today. It sucks because the ex sets are my favorites and I’d basically need to buy all my favorite cards again if I wanted to grade some as 9 and 10.

I don’t know if what I said above is a fault really. One of my faults definitely is though that I can’t decide what I want to collect. Salamences, yeah sure. And the rest that I buy is just random stuff, I’m probably not so organized as a collector. I also wish my mind could let me buy some more valuable cards but I’m thinking too much of the value and what else could I get with the money. It’s bit problematic. As I start a new job and I get paid better I guess I could finally invest for some more valuable cards that I want.

Sometimes I feel like some people here probably leave the heat on 50 all winter and eat ramen so they can look at their shiny PSA 10’s. I think that is more of a fault than not being willing to drop big bucks on cards. Going into debt or sacrificing quality of life for collectibles isn’t the most wise thing to do.

I guess my faults would definitely be impatience from waiting for PSA orders. Also a little bit of @pokemonsyndicate style back and forth on my collection goals. Started off going for PSA 10’s of WOTC, switched to 9’s switched to raw mit/nm and gold stars/shinings. I typically am wise enough to pay what I see as below market, and can often make a slight profit when my goals change, but it isn’t always the case.

When I set a collection goal not reaching it isn’t an option. I’m very paranoid that cards I need will not be available or are low pop so I won’t ever get them. Because of these two things together, I often don’t mind paying more than most people would value a card at; the idea that this is potentially my only chance to get a card makes me oftentimes disregard the price.

  1. I’m not the loquacious type… i don’t think i’m good at negotiating big sales, especially face to face.

  2. I think of the money side too much, and the hobby as an investment always plays the back of my mind. If i can’t inference prices gains, i’m generally hesitant to buy it.

For me its a few things.

Even though just did my first PSA submission, i’m also impatient. for the past month while my cards were at PSA, i checked everyday to see if i got my grades.

Another is that i easily get distracted from my main goal which is the 1st Edition Base set. I tend to often go and buy cards from sets that i am not collecting therefore having having less money for when the cards i need come up for sale

I also often think to myself that what if i never find the cards i need to complete the set after searching hours on the internet for them. I get that sad feeling that i’m failing myself.

I know this feeling, almost every day I check PSA’s pop report for 1st ed. Neo Genesis and every time it stays the same for cards I’m missing. Can’t even locate mint singles by myself. :sob:

Great thread.
My Pokemon fit into four categories.

  1. Untouchable Collection
  2. List in near future (Biggest group)
  3. LIST ASAP (See Below)
  4. Listed on eBay

Well, my biggest fault in regards to the hobby is my LIST ASAP pile. I’m the laziest person here when it comes to listing. There’s thousands of items with most of them PSA in those boxes and they just sit and sit and sit.
I need an assistant:(
