Hi all. Been on the hunt for a New Year Present card and I’ve seen a few listings pop up the last month both in the US and Japan trying to sell it for around $1,500 USD to upwards to $2,000 USD (I’ve also been connected with a few others thanks to members here).
When I sold mine last year, it was for roughly $200 USD. For context, I bought it for about $180 a few year prior. I’ve also seen similar Special Cards sell in the $100-$300 range.
Has it legitimately jacked up in price and I missed something? Or are these sellers just out of their minds? None of the sellers have budged below an offer of $1000 USD, even in played condition.
Thanks for any clarity. Just want to make sure that what I’m offering is fair.
I just made the same observations as you on Japanese sites - late 2018 onward this Jumbo and the Celebi one both were listed and sold for anything from 50 to 300$, likely because niche items on auctions w/o consistent demand can fluctiate like that. When I checked back on them this year, all asking prices went through the roof, but I didn’t see any sell for them. Celebi recently auctioned in Japan, again, for around 300$.
It just looks like very low supply with low demand and sellers that don’t need to sell.
Perhaps to add a data point I paid 600 USD for a heavily played copy two months ago. The one currently on YJ is a flip or relist from one that sold for 800 USD in May (I was the second highest bidder there).
So I’d say yes the price has increased quite a lot lately. They do not appear or sell often so it’s tough to pinpoint a price. Hope this helps
I bought one for $60 last October on eBay to have the seller contact me shortly after shipping to say that someone else was interested in it. I only had it in my hands for all of 30 minutes before packaging it up and shipping it over to the other guy for $300. Was a nice quick buck for sure.
All of these cards are niche and fluctuate like mad. As an example, I picked up my first Tropical Present for $200 to then pick up a higher quality copy for $30 about 3 weeks later.
There was a thread posted here on 2015 which I dug up a few days ago doing research for my blog which stated that they were anywhere from $80 to $200. I guess they still have pretty much the same demand as they had back then.
As in what made me be the second highest bidder for the 800$ one? Technically there was no market price whatsoever. I hadn’t seen one sell in a very long time. I figured even if I paid a record price, the likely hood of another coming up for cheaper is quite slim. And if one did come up for cheaper there is slight insensitive for me to purchase a second copy if I felt it was worth it. I’m not going to lie, I was nervous about paying 600 for the heavily played one, I asked for an opinion of a member here and they helped me pull the trigger.
Luckily I had both the HP option and the NM option at the same time. After I decided not to bid higher on the YJ auction I made sure to purchase the other copy.
Thanks for the clarification, @mthursty. In the future, feel free to post here about price checks. I know of 3 personally that sold this past year (mine included) and none of them went above $220. Personally, I hope the price settles back to the $300 range otherwise I will have to reassess my goals.
