I have to agree with @pichufan, I’m not a fan of the execution. The idea is fantastic, combining 4 cards to make a super card is awesome and I’m so so happy that they’re trying a brand new idea… but the borders are way too thick, and those three so far are just meh to me. Maybe they’ll come out with a new version that will be absolutely killer that will make me fall in love. I think I’d love to see an arceus/dialga/palkia/giratina quad card
I think the V-Union cards are a great opportunity for V/Vmax special arts that are too detailed to observe on a regular sized card. Artists can extend their creativity over a much larger canvas (as AKIRA EGAWA has shown with their Mewtwo V-Union). It definitely opens up possibilities of dynamic scenery - wouldn’t it be awesome if Murata’s artpiece made it to the cards?
It’s funny to see everyone commenting from a collector perspective ahaha. I think this is a neat game mechanic, though the cards themselves are lackluster so far. When I saw that each “piece” had its own ability and attack, I was hoping it would be a mechanic where you were able to play the Union with only 1 or 2 pieces and then add pieces to gain additional abilities and attacks as needed. But it’s still a refreshing change of pace.
Yeah, you have to play all 4 from your discard pile to use them. And from a gameplay perspective, there are several cards in standard and expanded right now that can hit for more than 300 in one turn right? I feel like they aren’t that much stronger if any stronger than current cards.
Also, nobody has mentioned this yet but the decks these will come in will come with a professor Burnet promo card too. This will definitely help set the decks up, but I dunno. I’m super excited to see how they play even if I don’t like how they look currently
Effect: Search your deck for up to 2 cards and discard them. Then, shuffle your deck.
Might still be better off in a 9 pocket to be honest, i assume they are not going to continue with these for very long like they did with everything else (i.e legends, amazing rares, breaks etc) so you would only have a few pages used up for them out of the whole binder, with a 9 pocket you could place other cards of the same pokemon around them to make a nice page still
Not too excited about pulling PART of a Pokemon, but the artwork for these will probably continue to be MENTAL, so that’s cool.
In the end, it’s one more cool thing i guess? As long as it isn’t replacing something we all love, but rather an addition, I’m down with it.
edit: @explorer I lol’d at the thought of a MASSIVE label with 16 subgrades
CARD #1 9.5, 9.5, 9.0, 9.5.
CARD #2 9.5 . . . etc.)
CARD #3 . . .
CARD #4 . . .
With a sale on ebay like, “Complete Mewtwo Union, Overall Average of 9.5” lolololol
I’ll echo what most are saying that if these are regular pulls put into our sets they’re going to be pretty underwhelming. If they’re released in a single product like Japan they will be much better.
I’m actually fairly confident they will release this way, TPCI has been getting a lot better recently with these kind of gameplay focussed products, League Battle decks finally replacing our awful theme decks, Trainer Toolkits etc. Add that to the fact that our English sets are already insanely bloated (just look at the amount of V/Vmax in Evolving Skies) and I think it all comes together for a good chance of these coming in a good single product.
I find it really interesting how heavy Pokemon are pushing Zacian, it was given one of the most broken cards ever for its debut, chosen as a featured Pokemon here alongside some of the biggest fan-favourites in the franchise and not only has he been chosen, he’s been given a 340 base damage attack.
This is really key as I THINK this is only the second time in the history of the TCG that the “Biggest Attack” title hasn’t been held by a Charizard card. I’m sure we all remember back to the playground days where we all thought of the best cards and best Pokemon being defined by having the biggest numbers.
1999 - Charizard (Base Set) 100 Damage
2000 - Blaine’s Arcanine (Gym Challenge) 120 Damage [Tied by Expedition Charizard in 2002]
2004 - Charizard ex (FRLG) 200 Damage
2014 - Mega Charizard EX (Flashfire) 300 Damage
2021 - Zacian V-Union (Promo?) 340 Damage
(I’m not a huge Pokemon historian so feel free to let me know if I missed anything here)
I feel like every few releases theres always something new that comes out which immediately Im not fond of for whatever personal taste reason. Then shortly after that something else comes along which im super excited for which just kind of leaves the rest in the dust for me.
This is one of those moments, but it just furthers the point that no matter what nothing in pokemon is really “good” or “bad”, rather theres something for everyone to enjoy the more you look around. With that take, I find this is still exciting to me to see roll out no matter what my initial take is.
I like how artists have a larger canvas to work with, however, there’s so much wasted space regarding the top & bottom borders. Could have easily extended the artwork.
The artwork on these are absolutely gorgeous, a huge fan of what they’ve done with the cards in that regard. I’m a bit more iffy on the 4 pieces because I don’t like the gaps in between the cards when they’re displayed. I might pick up the JPN decks and keep them like that for display because they’re pretty neat as a sealed item.
I’m not sure how long this V-Union thing will be around, I’m not TCG player unfortunately haha. I’d imagine it’ll be around for a couple of releases similar to Amazing Rares (are those still being released or was it finished with Vivid Voltage?).
