It’s funny a few months ago people said why is everything but base rising now people are saying why is only base rising. Base lagged behind a lot of the lower pop lower print stuff but then corrected back to its top dog status in spite of the excess printing it had. Insatiable demand. Maybe other things will pop up relative to base again after all the hype dies or maybe base will retrace harder than some of the others.

It’s all impossible to say what will happen but will sure be fun to be a part of.

I agree, but with the current prices most new collectors will be priced out of collecting 1st ed Base. Even if you were okay with collecting HP/damaged cards, a complete set of 1st Edition Base would be thousands of dollars ($10k+?). Those people would either go to Unlimited Base or would just skip Base entirely.

And I definitely agree with that view of 1st ed. Base. The only thing is that the fundamentals of all Pokemon sets haven’t changed in the past few months. 1st Edition Base had the same stature in July as it has now. So it’s interesting to see it increase in value so dramatically while everything else hasn’t risen much (if at all) for months now. So either there’s a market imbalance now or there was a market imbalance in June. In effect, it’s that it’s clear that one of three things must the case:

  1. Base Set was underpriced before the spikes and that this is market correction.

  2. Every set besides Base is currently underpriced.

  3. Base Set is presently inflated by speculator demand.

Personally, I think that #3 is most likely.

I think #1. To me 1st base has been undervalued for a couple years.

You could buy PSA 9 copies of at least half of the non-holos for cost until late 2019.

I get what you’re saying, but look at the relative prices of sets pre-COVID. Base Set didn’t shoot up in price nearly as much as some of the other sets at the beginning of the pandemic (April-May). And so it makes sense that, since the prices for the other sets have stuck (so far, at least), that Base Set has moved up in price since April-May.

But we’re now at a point where, compared to pre-COVID prices, Base Set has dramatically outperformed (in terms of percentage growth) every other set. So either the prices pre-COVID were out of whack or the current prices are out of whack. I’m not making a judgment either way, I’m just saying that this must be the case.

I just bought the last card for my first edition base set tonight (Maintenance). Buckle in and get ready for takeoff. Next stop, the moon.

In all seriousness though, even if a handful of people willing to spend a few hundred thousand enter the market it will drive prices way up. Out of millions of people, it’s pretty likely at least some will get into it and have the means. Remember how many people were into it 20 years ago? Did you know anyone that didn’t have the cards? Nostalgia is real.

So where is the opening? I looked on his channel with only 15 mins to air and I see nothing.

if we do open the 35 packs as promised, then i think we should see the charizard pulled tonight. if there is just one charizard, that’ll be enough. i hope logan is a fast pack opener and keep it under 80 minutes. do they sell commercial spots like the superbowl?
