It had to happen at some point, right? It was even requested.
So here it is. The last Pokémongeneration I consider ´great´ (although not quite Gen 1/2); Gen 3. It´s also the last generation I feel strongly nostalgic about so that makes it a bit harder to be rational. For instance, I really loved exploring with Relicanth but it is a somewhat forgettable Pokémon I guess. This goes for Luvdisc too. Don´t name Luvdisc. Lastly, don´t name Banette either because of spites and such (read the pokédex).
Also, I will count the amount a Pokémon has been named (through actual naming and the liking of that naming). This includes multiple namings in one post. That way we can determine with absolute precision (right?) what the most forgettable Pokémon in Hoenn is.
Let me start of by saying that the most problematic design for me is Pelipper. I liked the idea of a gull very much but the evolution design, to me, is very disappointing. It was everywhere though, so not the most forgettable. I´d pick Swalot, which on the contrary I don´t find a bad design, just a forgettable one.
I think Hoenn has very few forgettable Pokemon. Weak, divisive, unpopular Pokemon? Sure, oodles, but very few forgettable ones. Of course the whole generation is forgettable to genwunners so I will dismiss that.
Barboach, Chimecho, maybe Tropius. That’s it. All the others have some combination of qualities that keeps them from falling into complete obscurity.
You’re totally right, gen 3 designs are really solid overall.
Also two of my options as forgettable/disliked pokemon (Luvdisc, Sealeo) are actually used by a gym leader and elite four member, so I’m sure people remember them decently well
Chimecho is definitely strong pick, maybe even Volbeat + Illumise. Each has minimal amount of tcg cards and in games only time you remember their existence is while completing Pokedex.
This one is certainly on my personal kill list but I think it’s a touch more popular than Igglybuff due to its evolutions. Same with Wynaut to a lesser degree.
I actually never managed to find a chimecho in the game, it was crazy rare. The only problem is that it was a team rocket Pokemon, so kinda popular imho.
They are indeed, but Volbeat was actually somewhat viable competitive (Tail glow), so a lot of people probably searched up Illumise because of this as well.
Gen 3 has really solidly designed Pokemon throughout, and at least for me the quality of the game makes some otherwise less standout Pokemon more memorable! These are my top 5 least memorable, but if I had to pick one it would probably be Chimecho.
Team Rocket have a Chimecho in the anime. Huntail or Gorebyss and I don’t think any Pokemon comes close to them in Gen 3 for being the most forgettable
