The demand side of the equation will always confuse me…how can a card from 2016 be in the same ballpark as, e.g., the 2000 Fan Club promos??

I would invest in Play and Prize cards that are within that range.

Thank you - those ex cards look awesome

Awhile back I post a thread debating on opening my sealed Mario/Luigi box. I ended up rolling the dice and crack the box. My Mario FA was a bit off center, but the rest was super clean and well centered. I roll another dice and decided to submit them to BGS. Praying for some BGS 10s… I decide to go with BGS because the Luigi half art got black label potential. I don’t examine/pregrade my stuff by just eyeballing it.

If they come back true gem+ (strong 9.5.) I’ll probably just crack them open and send them to PSA. Hindsight I should have send them BGS express, but I ended up doing the 20 day on them =/. They receive in Dec, but I probably won’t get it back until May/June.

Somebody was wondering why the Mario/Luigi promo is selling more than the fan club promos. This year is the Mario 35th anniversary, and just in general; you can’t mention Nintendo without thinking Mario on the very next thought.

I mean I get what you’re saying but what you brought up is more a question of supply than demand.

If you’re looking at demand… it’s fucking Mario and Pikachu. Doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that.

Mario Pikachu is matching cards like Victory Ring, Mysterious Pearl & Championship Arena in PSA 10 lol. But it’s not perplexing to me since having 2 of the most iconic video game characters combined in one card can supersede rarity.

As far as I’m concerned recognizability is the name of the game right now. The new guys pumping money into the hobby right now probably don’t know these cards exist. This probably won’t last for long though.

The Mario pikachus are hot right now. They dominated Z+G top 20 modern sales for the past month. They’re low hanging fruit and don’t require a lot of research. I think the older and rare promos are going to have their time to shine really soon.

Exactly!

Show of hands for whose favourite Pokémon is the Mysterious Pearl? Lol

I get trophy cards, but any card that doesn’t have a Pokémon on it or a noteworthy trainer is just pure garbage to me.

Edit: before I get ripped, yes I know what a Mysterious Pearl is and the Palkia behind it. But my point stands. The card is about the Pearl and not about the Pokémon. Just doesn’t sit right with me.

Mysterious Pearl is my favorite card but I see your point lol. The first level of understanding cards is understanding rarity (supply). The second level is understanding that demand is also important. It’s supply AND demand.

I’m actually quite fond of the Wonder Platinum, Mysterious Pearl and Miracle Diamond solely off the basis that Gen 4 was my favourite era and many of my favourite pokemon come from that generation, but I was thinking about it just the other day that recognisability and nostalgia is probably what fuelds the demand most right now. As much as people like having some sort of social media presence – albeit often feigned – to flex on people, so too do people like having cards that are instantly recognisable, not only for themselves, but to show off to others. At this point I can refer to a 1st Edition Charizard as a point of monetary value to friends who know nothing about Pokemon and yet they’ll understand within some rough estimation an approximate value. Anything that is vague or obscure at this moment in time falls to the wayside outside of the hub of collectors when in comparison to something that is iconic.
A common misconception I’ve found with friends that I might have shown cards to is that a lot of people instantly associate holofoils with value or rarity, and anything non-holo as inherently less valuable. If this is how the layman is thinking then that could potentially harm the perceived value of some unnumbered promos and prize/trophies exclusive to Japan seeing as there were many non-holo releases that fall within these categories.

Unpopular opinion, I think Mario/Luigi Pikachu are an abomination

Agreed. Supply at the moment seems relatively high, I can’t believe that demand is commanding those prices for these monstrosities

Yep, which is why something like Mario Pikachu is going to garner more interest than an obscure promo.

Despite a significantly larger population, people can relate to Mario Pikachu.

People like myself have zero ties to a trainer card. I can see and understand why some people like it, but the market dictates where the money goes.

I like Nintendo as much as the next guy, but never once did I think “I wish there was a Mario x Pikachu crossover”. I get why it’s the way it is, I just don’t like it lol

It reminds me of this

Has anyone collected the PPP promos that are similar to the Play promos? What are your thoughts on them?

IMO that goes for all the dressed up Pikachu promos. Why buy a Pika in a Zard costume when you can just buy a real Zard.

People forget that it is not your regular WOTC holo, which you can buy in played condition for a fraction of the PSA 10 price, but still gives you an original copy. If you want a Pikachu Mario\Luigi, you’d either have to pay up or pass, there aren’t a lot of ungraded copies floating around.

It’s cool that’s it’s not for you.

But I’d wager that it appeals to far more people than a Mysterious Pearl lol
