日本のマーケット部分 The Giant Japanese Market Thread

What price were you expecting, or think is fair?

Most of the recent PSA 9 sales have been around $20,000. I personally think the card is worth about $15,000 and that it has been overpriced recently, but I was shocked to see it sell that low.

Market is soft for almost all old backs now. Won’t say it’s undervalued as that would imply prices will rise back to previously higher prices than what the current market is providing. These current vintage prices may very well be their norm for the next 5-10 years, if not longer.

Also the amount of money spent on rare cards this past few months is insane, at a certain point the prices will drop 10-20% due to buyers being spread thin

I wouldn’t categorize trophy cards like this with old backs/vintage. Trophies tend to behave differently than the general market trends. Barrier to entry is extremely high and two bidders can cause massive swings in price.

We’re seeing what’s happening after 2 separate booms (EN 2020, JP 2023) have settled. If it continues to spiral downwards while other trophy cards hold through the next year, it speaks more for the individual card than its category

The 2023 boom didn’t really have much affect on trophies. @Dyl is ultimately right, trophy cards are their own market in a lot of ways. There are private sales that occurred recently beyond any public metric, a couple even to my surprise. Some recent public sales have wide ranges. In the case of unikarp, more 9’s have sold this year than I can remember, naturally that should decrease the value. Regardless, trophy cards just have less sales data so it’s harder to determine trends.

I won’t go into too much details but I won that Unikarp and my max bid was far above what it ended at.
I would argue eBay is one of the worst platforms for these kinda items, there is a soft (hidden) cap on allowed bids for which you need to get your account verified/unlocked and many people don’t even know about it. This time around there just wasn’t a 2nd bidder raising the price up.

For those who don’t know, @evaner is talking about the $15,000 hidden cap that eBay has for most buyers.

If you’re willing to share, what was your max bid, @evaner?

Rules for bidding $15,000 or more

To place a bid of $15,000 or more, you need to provide a valid credit card (your card won’t be charged). This requirement helps make sure that members making large purchases are of legal age and serious about completing the transaction.

For bids on eBay Motors, you need to provide a valid credit card to place bids of $25,000 or more.

You only need to provide this information once. We encourage you to take these steps before bidding on an item that might go above this price.

It was around last sale of 21k, pretty happy to grab this newly graded one at 67%.

Congrats @evaner . I believe there is a cap on listing items too—$17k is I think the max before further account approval

I remember doing a pika trophy back when I ran consignments on eBay and multiple people couldn’t bid at the end because of the bid cap. At the time I think it was based on prior spending.

lol well you nailed it @conwaytwitty … dang!

At least the 10% coupon is back for TCG items. Just used it to scoop a set of these: (supposedly unopened w/ energies and all, fingers crossed)

$357 was total with 10% off coupon – cheaper than last solds on ebay ($494, $549, and $540)

Buyee has spoiled me, I’m waiting on purchasing a card which could just sell out until I see a 20% discount. Oh well.
