Someone like him who benefits from hyping up the card, the set, and the hobby creates a huge conflict of interest.
Am I the only one who doesnât get why people love this card so much? Moonbreon I can totally understand. But I just donât get the hype around the GiratinaâŠthe art/layout is way too busy and Giratina isnât a particularly popular Pokemon (I donât think?).
I was wondering about that as well. Seems like too early of a call for such a new set. I honestly donât think Mason has nearly enough of a following to cause a major shift or influence (intentional or not) on the market for a single card or product, but I could be wrong. Heâs no where near as big as others. I also found the majority of his other videos genuine & helpful, so I do sort of want to give him the benefit of the doubt. If it becomes a trend going forward, Iâll begin to question his content and videos much more.
the umbreon is one of the ugliest cards I have ever seen. I dont want to appear as though all I think is modern = bad because many alt arts are really really good. Its just that that card is heavily impacted by the gigantimax gimmick which I dont think is super popular. In 4 years (heck even as soon as scarlet and violet are released) are people gonna be like âhey remember when my pokemon could become bigger? That was epic!â the same way people like megas (though now even mega evolution cards are pretty much forgotten).
Giratina at least is known to be in the distortion world and that pic looks like it could be there
Iâm right there with you. Obviously art is subjective, but I was confused by how much hype the art was getting before the set release. Imo itâs not even in the top half of alt arts
The pkmntcgdeals Discord doesnât have a very high opinion of him. He overcharges on everything.
Personally, i like the card, but its certainly a bit overhyped imo. I actually dont understand the moonbreon hype either. The card is fine, but i much prefer the Vaporeon V, Leafeon V and Glaceon V alts. I think Giratina is popular, origin forme anyway.
& yea idk this is the first time ive seen him do something that rly rubbed me the wrong way. Ive never bought from him or anything tho, so im just going off his youtube vids
I mean, itâs all subjective isnât it?
I donât think there will be much revisionism if any. The structure of the scene is one of the best unlike say Leafeon, Glaceon or Rayquaza. The gimmick is irrelevant and perhaps will be what makes it unique actually since thereâll never be another reason to have enlarged Pokemon in a scene.
If anything, it sucks that Pokemon didnât start off with these alts. You could argue they want to simplify or something for the first year, or maybe so that they have something to build upon or that it is easier to do so, but that just means that the newest Pokemon get shafted in their own generation in terms of truly artistic cards.
Or rather, that this luck of the draw separates which Pokemon get love and which will never do so. For example, Lapras and Snorlax were the Gigantamax debutants - alt arts of those wouldâve been amazing. The starters, which get ignored after their generation, could be great draws for the kids who played SWSH etc. but in the end Inteleon only got one randomly in a special deck.
Iâm quite sure theyâll get rid of alts for the first year but I think that will be a big mistake. Most people are used to it now, the alts have become the chase cards and the only cards holding up the sets - beyond the TGs which are obviously going. Sales will drop off a cliff if itâs back to rainbows being the supposed chase.
I do think on average the price for new modern sets will decrease a bit, usually there will be a hype around the release, then it cools down, but some cards will hold strong, but it rarely reaches back to the peak.
Thank goodness. Iâm glad Iâm not the only one that doesnât care for the umbreon.
If the pkmntcgdeals discord is related to the r/pkmntcgdeals subreddit, then yeah, the people there lose all rational thought when they see a price they donât personally agree with. So of course they would be upset with a card shop owner who prices above MSRP so he doesnât sell out before day 1, while telling you not to buy his stock because itâs purposefully overpriced.
I also saw that video and am glad you brought it up, because I felt the same way about it. It felt very unusual to see that type of speculation from the Card N All channel, I found it pretty weird. Apparently because of that video, the Giratina alt went from $180 to $220+ basically in the span of a few hours. Itâs now at $250+ about a week from releaseâŠusually Card N All is good about telling viewers to hold their money and wait for a dip in price, but I guess if the pull rates for the set really ARE that bad, it would make sense to expect an increase in price?
Whatâs weirder to me is the price for a booster box is $106âŠthatâs such a low week-one price compared to sets from the last two years. Youâd think if there was such a great demand for the Giratina alt (among other chase cards in the set) as people are trying to make it seem, the boxes would be selling for more, no?
Another thought on Lost Origin while Iâm at it. At $106 a box I would heavily consider buying a case to open, but looking at singles prices there are only 8 cards over $30. Why would I buy the case when I can buy every card minus those top 8 for relatively the same price, week one no less?
There was hype around this set because of the alts, pull rates, Le Chorizord, competitive viability, etc. Where is all that hype now? From my perspective it seems like the demand isnât substantive. Everyone is too busy talking about the Charizard UPC to continue pumping the latest modern set. It feels good. And in a couple weeks/months that $600 for 98% of the entire set will be even cheaper as singles prices drop.
It certainly was a weird experience lol. Idk, maybe people really think they wonât be able to pull any of the alt-arts, so theyâre just rushing the singles? If so, itâs kinda funny because thatâs actually a pretty rational move in general, but in the context of this situation, itâs just kinda odd. Like, you probably werenât gonna pull the Moonbreon either, yet people were still gassing up those boxes.
It kinda sucks that modern stonks so hard because I love building master sets, which with Japanese is usually great because the most expensive cards in the set are still typically <$100. Itâs very difficult to rationalize spending several hundred dollars on a new set card and usually I just wonât end up doing it, which means I have like 6 binders that are all incomplete and probably will be for the foreseeable future.
A PSA 10 1st Edition Houndoom from Neo Rev sold this week for $4750. This is a big drop from the last sale (that I could find anyway) of $9500, and an absolutely massive drop from a $16k sale that happened on PWCC only a year ago.
Is there any reason this went low, or is it just a victim of the overall market being down significantly in the last 18 months? Would it being shipped from Japan and not within the US have such a big impact? Iâd have thought a card as popular & scarce as this one to be insulated a little from the crazy price drops, but it would seem not. Trying to get a grasp on what I should potentially be offering in a few months so any thoughts would be cool!
Beyond the location of the item, the holo-bleed Houndoom 1st Edition variant is known to sell for significantly more than the ânormalâ version. As you can see, PWCC auctioned a holo-bleed version.
Holo-bleeds are fairly common among the Unlimited printing of Neo Revelation, but particularly rare among the 1st Edition printing. Better yet, a PSA 10 holo-bleed is almost unheard of.
Makes sense, that wasnât something I was aware of!
Itâs a niche part of the hobby. Those of us who love holo-bleeds are rarely rational during auctions.
What do you call WotC holo foil? I always called it galaxy but apparently bulbapedia calls it starlight?
âGalaxyâ is the one most commonly used.
But âStarfoilâ, âStarlightâ, âtru foilâ, âoriginalâ, âthe glory daysâ, âthe best oneâ also works.
