Loving this thread.. Cannot believe this one!
It’s right there!
There’s also a few cards that are only holo in english and not japanese. I’m thinking of a dp era milotic, and legendary birds, but there must be a few more
I absolutely love this thread! You guys have great niche facts. I’m not sure if everyone knows this one already or if its even correct, what do you guys think of this?
Some people wonder why the mudkip goldstar isn’t purple. It could be because in water, longer wavelengths are absorbed more and don’t travel as far as shorter wavelengths. Since purple = red + blue, it makes sense that a shiny mudkip viewed underwater would appear blue instead of purple because blue is the second shortest visible wavelength (after violet) and red is the longest wavelength. This makes purple a particularly unlikely color to see clearly underwater. Maybe Fukuda knew this and wanted to keep the image realistic.
When comparing it to a version a reddit user edited to look like the actual shiny, I think the purple one looks quite unnatural, could it be that we all can instinctively tell that we shouldn’t be able to see such a clear purple underwater? Or is it just me and a placebo effect from knowing the theory?
But yeah, definitely feel free to tell me if I’m wrong about this. Im excited to see more of your posts!
Now this is the good stuff!!
You are correct! I remember this was discussed here awhile back and this link was used as a reference: Color Underwater
It’s definitely because he is underwater, and cool that Fukuda took that into account. Also you can tell it’s the shiny version by his tail and belly.
Here’s a random one:
Suzukisan is a group of 3 musicians that sing the Pokemon Rap in Japanese made up of Kobayashi (center), Imakuni (right), and Raymond (left).
The artwork comes from the album “Let’s Trade Please”.
They have all sorts of media that promoted the TCG: CD’s, VHS, etc. and most of it has aged comically well ![]()
Bonus:
Imakuni was originally a graphic designer for Creatures and has cards credited to him as both Imakuni? and Tomoaki Imakuni:
I love that card! It might be the most niche pokemon card with unique art!
My topics will be almost explicitly on repeating error discovery in most sets from vintage to present. I’m doing this solely for the purpose of teaching collectors about unearthed repeating error cards. 3 so far and many more to come.
And a very unique distribution!

This is a thread I’d like to make. There are a few I know of in Neo as well, but sure there’s more out there
Butterfree, beedrill, and starmie
Egawa said at Worlds that the prompt she was given for these was only to make them gold. So she said she studied the colours that gold could take and tried to use those specifically when doing the backgrounds. You can see some subtle yellowish greens in the background for instance
Pretty sure Aerodactyl as well
When I got home, I had to double check I had all of the JPN exclusive holos you listed. I realized I was somehow missing the TRR cards, so thanks for mentioning these.
Three other EX series cards that I found which had holos in the JPN set but not in English set were in EX Delta Species: Holon’s Electrode, Sandslash, and Holon’s Magneton.
These are my favourites!
I definitely think an article on holo exclusive differences between japanese and English would be really appreciated
