They’re both ugly as sin but for anyone thinking Sonic is in response to D.Pikachu:
On June 10, 2014, a live-action animated film based on Sonic the Hedgehog was announced as a joint venture between Sony Pictures and Marza Animation Planet.
In April 2016, it was reported that Legendary Pictures was in negotiations for the live-action film rights to Pokémon.
You think? I usually don’t like it when professionals are walking back on decisions made, just because the internet is throwing a hissy fit. If things are undeniably wrong (like Sonic being portrayed as a racist or whatever), then of course they should adjust and fix the movie.
But to let everybody weigh in on such a big project like this is like having a big company having a big meeting with everybody at the same time and trying to fulfill all wishes of everybody; you can’t please everybody.
Just let the professionals make the movie they want and trust their vision. They need to accept that not everybody is going to love it and tweaking things as soon as people start to shout on the internet is going to be an endless endeavor; people will shout regardless.
And you’re right about the controversy raising awareness; everybody remotely interested has seen the trailer because of it.
I’m not saying the end result will be pure gold, all the time. But at least you’ll get to see their vision, instead of everybody else’s.
With the internet nowadays, it’s easy to find yourself a fanfic if you don’t like the trailer. Or better yet, right one your own. Who knows where it might end up, right?
It’s probably just me, but I think it seems like everybody nowadays is afraid to express themselves, thereby stunting creativity. There’s also just a general lack of backbone. Stand for something you believe instead of going with what other people think of your creation. This may not always result in a good product, but at least you can say you tried your best with what you had.
And for the record, the Super Mario Bros. is a great, cheesy movie. Just like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter.
There’s a big difference between ignoring a few haters vs. the entire fanbase telling you something is seriously wrong. Customers don’t need to make an entire game or movie but if you don’t listen to your fanbase you’ll drop big money.
Important to note that this isn’t the same as Star Wars and Ghostbusters who are pandering to a vocal minority. If you aren’t cringing at this iteration of Sonic there’s something wrong. How it made it to this point is a complete mystery.
I can totally see that. But at the end of the day, Sonic fans still get a Sonic movie out of this, right?
I’m just baffled how these big companies are so paralyzed by the opinion of people on the internet. Granted, a LOT of people don’t agree with this trailer, but to me it feels unnecessary and to me it looks like a lot of people jump on the ‘cool to hate’ bandwagon. Where was everybody when the first visuals were released several weeks ago? There were people then who were not fond of it either, but there wasn’t a big outcry like now (as far as I’m aware).
I’m not, and I don’t understand why a lot of people do. What’s wrong with it? What did people expect?
In almost 30 years, Sonic has seen many iterations. Not all of them were great to everybody, but I personally never felt like they needed to go back and rerelease those games, cartoons and comics; we got what we got and either we loved it or we moved on.
More people will see the trailer than early development images so you will end up with more people complaining or ridiculing. As it comes closer to actual release people become more critical. When I saw the early images I thought it was a joke before brushing it off as “oh, they’ll fix it”.
I am a Sonic fan and will watch it regardless but being the eyesore that it is, I likely won’t be rushing out to the theater. I can’t speak for everyone but if he looked better I would gladly go out of my way to see it.
Detective Pikachu is bordering this same situation and I would much rather see something like Alita style humans with detailed but smooth mons that are more true to their design. I am going to see it in theatres regardless but likely wouldn’t if I wasn’t a hardcore pokemaniac.
