Smpratte Waifu’s rant

Pearl Harbor, Waifus, _______

It’s 3 strikes and you’re out Japan. You’ve been warned.

I agree that this is an important distinction that should be kept in mind: the majority of the cards and character poses themselves are not highly sexualized (in fact, most are actually very innocuous and incredibly tame compared to other Japanese popular culture media/franchises). Just look at the buylist image posted earlier in the thread—I think you’d be grasping at straws if you tried making the claim that even 20% of them were highly sexual in nature. In this discussion, the sexualization is assumed to be occurring in how some people are viewing these cards and the characters in them.

Given this, I think it would be remiss to not recognize that some of us have imposed our worst assumptions on some of the buyers of these cards when I think their intentions may not be as in-the-gutter as some of us are assuming. See this point by @ddk:

Following up on this, I don’t know a lot of figurine collectors on a personal level, but I would not be surprised if a good chunk of figurine collectors (of even the raunchy-ish figurines) are not actually closet perverts just waiting for the day they can escape reality and elope with their anime wives.

I wonder if the divide in this debate cuts across those that are more and less familiar with/into anime/manga culture. (Not anime like Pokemon and Dragonball Z and whatnot, but the potentially… weirder… anime and manga)

Sorry if I missed it (there’s 100 posts in a day here) but have any of the trainer collectors in here explained why, specifically, they are willing to pay $100,000 for these cards? (Besides magi buy list obviously)

Collects specific pokemon card because it is cool → okay
Collects specific pokemon card because it is cute → okay
Collect specific trainer card because he/she is cool → okay
Collect specific trainer card because she is cute → suddenly not okay?

I don’t collect waifu cards, but i don’t see any reason why its wrong to collect them. Especially in Japan, where moe culture is prevalent, one would expect full art female trainer supporter cards to be more popular over there. Just because you can’t comprehend the demand doesn’t mean that there is no real demand for it. Come on, the artwork for most waifu cards aren’t even that sexualized. Let collectors collect what they want.

Half your age + 7 is the amount of waifu cards you’re allowed to have before you’re a pervert

I don’t know if anyone here has spent that much, though I could be wrong.

More broadly, I don’t think many people take (serious) issue when someone active in Pokemon as a hobby collects full art trainers, but rather when someone who collects… uh… ‘questionable items’ from other franchises comes into Pokemon just to also get these cards. I think the intent there is often different to just liking a specific Pokemon character, which can be for a number of not-weird reasons.

Simplified Chinese says hi.

Here are the top chase cards from each set released in Simplified Chinese. The prices are in CNY (divide by 7 to get USD), but just comparing the numbers will give you a sense of how the trend looks like. Keep in mind that these are all set cards released within 8 months (oldest set was from October 28, 2022).

While I do appreciate how civil (aside from one oddly peeved member) this thread has been, I find it absolutely amazing how many people here are completely missing the point and are falsely equating things. Or are simply building strawmen and arguing against things that Scott never even said.

But I digress. This will be my last post in here. It’s likely only a matter of time before this thread gets locked anyway.

Should I bring up multiverse theory and how there are literally billions of Smprattes who are hardcore waifu collectors?

Seems to be the best way to lock a thread.

This is the best comment in the entire thread. I can’t stop laughing.

Yeah it’s run it’s course. I never intended for it to be anything outside of patreon. If people want to ask a follow up on patreon for the q&a feel free! To end on a lighthearted note, here is a meme I made that took longer than it should :upside_down_face:
