IMO from what I saw in Scott’s video, the Charizard would be a pretty strong PSA 10. But I do think the centering wasn’t quite perfect and the imperfections along the edge on the bottom-left of the back would also cause another deduction. So IMO very likely a PSA 10 (and a strong one) but not a BGS 10. Just my best guess.
I saw browneyecollectibles on IG post a video about his BGS 9.5++ (2 10 subgrades and 9.5) 1st ed Charizard not getting a PSA 10. They said the only reason was because of one corner. From my experience I have graded so many PSA 10s with just that one corner flaw that I was surprised. As others have mentioned, we have all seen PSA 10s in worse condition. If scott’s SGC doesn’t get at least a PSA 10 then what will? Personally, I think it would be hard not to be overly critical of such hobby defining cards if you were a grader.
@hyruleguardian that rundown you just gave just feels like a lot for calling it a strong PSA 10.
I remember some negativity about the card back when it was listed and now people are talking black label, strong psa 10, best charizard ever. Obviously “best” is subjective and surely that could be for some people.
It is hard to tell in video and I’ll obviously never hold it in hand… but again just from the video felt like a long stretch to be talking black labels and all that. I’ll need to give the video another watch to remember the exact statements and to get a better look at it. Maybe the extent of the issues on the bottom left backside was just magnified being in a case and/or being on a camera.
Honesty, if I bought this as a PSA 10, I would be very happy with it.
Having said that, I’ve certainly seen stronger PSA 10 WOTC cards. And given how absurdly difficult it seems to be for a WOTC card to get a BGS 10, I feel confident in saying that the two flaws I cited would keep it from getting a BGS 10. (Not that I’m an expert)
When I say it’s a strong PSA 10, I mean it’s a card that would absolutely in my opinion deserve a 10.
Now, if someone were to cross-grade it to PSA, would it get a 10? Honestly, who knows. I certainly think it would deserve a 10. But there are no guarantees. The fact that only 1 new Charizard has been graded as a PSA 10 in the last 2 years tells us that.
Having said that, it’s a beautiful card and I’m sure that its current or future owners would never try to cross it to a PSA 10 anyway.
I feel like Beckett doesn’t give out Black labels on purely objective criterias, you might need a helping hand inside Beckett like Gary Moser who got several Black Labels on his sports cards. With that said I don’t think the card in the video deserves it, that little bit of whitening on the back, bottom left, will hold it back imo.
That’s a shame I would love to see a black label 1ed charizard. If Garys set wouldnt qualify and this SGC doesn’t qualify I doubt anything will at this point
If You could have one for free as a hypothetical … would u pick the double gem sgc 10 or a psa 10?
People underestimate the difficulty of WOTC holo BGS 10s.
I sent a few cards to BGS several months back that I would be shocked if did not receive a PSA 10 and none got BGS 10. It was a poor financial decision as the BGS 9.5+ grade does not carry the price premium I think it should; too often people equate all BGS 9.5 as the same when there is a world of quality difference with a 9.5/10/9.5/9.5 and a 9.5/9.0/9.5/9.5.
Here is an example, this card is twice the price in PSA 10 and would be an easy crossgrade, which in hindsight I should’ve done myself before selling, with the price it got I would’ve preferred to just keep anyway. www.ebay.com/itm/353303183785
IMO if someone wants to crossgrade the Charizard it will get a PSA 10 and a BGS 9.5++
I don’t like saying “strong” or “weak” PSA 10. A 10 is a 10. And I’m pretty sure this SGC Charizard would reliably grade a 10. Getting a Black Label though is on a different level.
If someone gave me a free 1st edition Charizard it’s value would far exceed the total combined value of all my other assets, so I would immediately look to sell it and re-diversify. The PSA 10 is far more recognizable in Pokemon, so I would choose it without hesitation.
Idk, I think PSA does pay a lot more attention to crossgrades/high end. Cracked out, yeah it could 10. In the case? A BGS 9.5 with those exact subs 9.5/10/9.5/10 didn’t cross to PSA 10 yesterday
Yes, cracked out. Always crack your cards if you can for crossgrade. I have literally sent cards still in case for crossgrade, unsuccessful minimum grade, cracked out, resent, received minimum grade.
This thread perfectly demonstrating why I dont care about condition after a certain threshold. Perfectly fine if people want to play this game but we’re really splitting hairs when comparing cards that are 99.7% mint to cards that are 99.8% mint
