Sex, voices and Pikachus

I was pretty sure the subject line would get your attention!

I was going through some of my old interview transcripts this weekend, and found the one I had conducted with Ikue Otani, the voice of Pikachu. (This was the interview during which she autographed my Base set no-rarity-mark Pikachu card.)

One of the questions I asked her was whether Pikachu was a “he” or a “she.” The answer might surprise you.

Read the interview to find out!

I have a tendency to say ‘he’ or ‘she’ depending on the design of the Pokemon, and sometimes neither because they are ambiguous. I would call Pokemon like Gardevoir, Delphox, and Milotic a she because their design is feminine. But I also hate it when real world societal problems/arguments are pushed onto make believe worlds like Pokemon so it wouldn’t bother me either way.

More on topic, she seems like the loveliest lady ever:

She was delightful. She even allowed me to record a short segment in which she spoke full sentences in Pikachu’s voice.

yeah great point house. I get the same thing with roselia etc. I suppose you could have a male one with the right voices.

Agreed!

Glad everyone enjoyed it

I’m going to be posting an interview I did with Hiromi Seki, the producer of the first season of “Digimon,” in a few days. (Yeah, I know to some around here, “Digimon” is a naughty word. )
