T17 has always been the most valuable card in Genesis. There are buy threads on E4 alone that go back 5 years offering premiums for a Psa 10 T17, to no avail. People who simply didn’t know the history are suddenly shocked by the price jump that made them notice the card.
I do agree that some people are just explaining their view, but I’ve been tagged in so much salt on ig it’s unreal.
I don’t understand the salt. Buy it or don’t buy it and move on. Can’t afford a 10 get a 9. Or 8. Or 7. Or ungraded etc. But there’s no need for anyone to cry or be upset prices jump. If you own the card in question and it tripled I’m sure there is zero complaints or questions
While mine does have both: borderline centering and a red dot. It is still a very deserving 10 in my opinion - zero whitening and zero print lines. And to those speculating the next price point, it very well might not happen for a long time. I have placed 8 out of 9 and 7 of those 8 have said that they will never sell or are in a position they dont need to. They last one is on ebay for 24k (pulled down today). People are going to be less likely to bust 9s now that the price is so high, and you could definitely get dropped to an 8 in a lot of cases.
Nope, I don’t think they bought it yet. I wouldn’t even be surprised if this thread scared him/her away at this point tbh, haha. (S)he opened a thread to offer 750 USD for a card that a month ago sold for 300-500 USD, so not too unreasonable. Within less than a week three copies sold for 1.2k, 2k, and 2.2k USD if I understand the comments in this thread correctly, haha. Talk about hyperinflation…
Huh… this is a nice time to check back in with Pokémon. Feel very lucky to have a 1st Ed no-whitening, solid-centering, only-flaw-is-print-lines… T17 we’re calling it? I think I got it for $60 a few years ago. Now that’s what I call return on investment.
I haven’t read this whole thread so this might have been said earlier, but I find this very interesting. Back when 1st Edition base was exploding in popularity in 2016-2017 there was a very clear pattern of 10s rising in price and the lower grades rising to catch it. Kind of like people who had budgets big enough to get the higher grade before the price went up decided to settle for the lower grade, increasing buying pressure there, etc. I never really got why that didn’t happen with other cards like this one. T17 PSA 10 has always been a “name your price” kind of card because it strangles the possible amount of complete PSA 10 sets. But for some reason the lower grades never had any premium… I guess because collectors were still holding on to the false hope of getting a 10? I guess Pokémon was still young enough that people thought they could do the most and 100% every set, but now reality that these cards aren’t guaranteed to be attainable is setting in. Does T17 have enough demand to sustain these prices? I really don’t know because I haven’t been keeping up too closely but I can’t say I’m complaining about it for now.
Think a big point too missed in the video (or maybe I missed it) is that it is the charizard of gen 2…otherwise why isn’t slowking a $2000 psa 9? Slowking’s ratio of psa 10 to psa 9 is 5.10%, lower than Typhlosion at 6.43%. Only 10 slowking to 9 Typhlosion.
as the 10s of any card become attainable, the 9s and lesser cards will go up in value. To people who have been part of the scene for a while this is hard to digest. They can remember when the 10s were attainable or when the money they have now could have bought those 10s (with a time machine).
But to new people coming in, they’ll adjust to what’s available and to what they can afford. If 10s never trade, or they trade at such high prices that they might as well write off the fact that they could ever own one, then they’ll go for the 9s. Or the 8s, or the 7s.
When I was in my 20s I collected silver age comic books. I built a nice collection of CGC 5s and 6s. I was proud of my collection and loved having a piece of history. That was all I could afford, and I thought it was totally sweet! As more people come into the pokemon hobby and it matures, particularly for “key” cards, prices for all of the grades will stratify. 1st edition base Charizard is the perfect example. People generally have a sense there of what each grade is worth and what they can buy into if they have “X” amount of dollars. It’s just not a mature enough market for a lot of the other cards yet.
I might be out of the loop, but why arn’t people happy that the card has a high price? Hard to grade, Gen 2 starter (the best starter that gen IMO) and a really cool artwork! Why are we not celebrating that the card hit a new high?
Sorry if I sound stupid but thats how I look at it
People who may have sold theirs for $200 last year.
People who still think the Pokemon Go bubble is a thing.
It should be noted that there are people who are just genuinely curious as to why/how the price has spiked so much, and given that it was a few hundred just a few months ago, it’s certainly an interesting discussion.
This happens all the time, people wont buy when its a 100$ but complain that they didn’t buy it before it became 1000$ Thats one of the reasons why I have started spending more myself in cards I want, im tired of thinking that I should have/could have bought it at a better price so I buy it when I see it now at the price people are asking
