I enjoyed SV base due to me being able to find it and open it with the family. On the opposite end I never found Prismatic in the wild and grew to quickly hate the pull rates and set as a whole. I would love to find BW product but have yet to as well. The cards look great though.
I’m very eager to check back on this post in 5 years. To me the destined rivals set list is stacked. B&W is also stacked, and 151 is genwunner bait.
Everything else is a complete toss up
I stil don’t even know what the set list is for journey together, let alone anything after. lol. Well I know the Prismatic eeveelution arts, thats about it.
Temporal got S tier based on the iron crown alone lol probably my favorite card in the S&V era. Every set had something to offer but I think the Tera mechanic held it back, I’m excited to see the next era with Megas!
SW&SH Era still has my heart but the addition of illustration rares made this era more fun to rip tbh
not ranked within tiers
when spending more than 1 minute thinking about this, i’d probably move prismatic down to b tier
keep in mind most sets would be D or F tier in this scale aside from something like eevee heroes, vstar universe, etc
I’m not sure that I can accurately rank these sets, because I haven’t opened like half of the era due to the shortages and outrageous prices.
Follow your heart
A little bit late to the party but still wanted to make a tierlist as well. If I am honest I wasn’t the biggest fan of the era, especially because I really disliked the Tera/Stellar type Mons/cards and the Paradox forms. Furthermore, I really struggle with English modern because a lot of the set identity that the Japanese sets have gets lost when two (or more) sets are combined (most clearly visible at Destined Rivals because both Heat Wave Arena and The Glory of Team Rocket where much more cohesive).
151 was clearly the best set for me, Surging Sparks basically only is in B-Tier because two of my top 5 cards of the era are in this set (Milotic ex and Feebas).
Let’s see what the Mega era will bring!
151 was the only set I opened like a madman. Bought 1 box each of the earlier sets, but once product started to get hard to find and prices went up, I didn’t get involved. So I’m gonna channel the inner genwunner in my soul and say 151 > all.
I grew up with the EX and Diamond & Pearl series, so I was really hyped for the return of Pokemon ex. I was really hoping that we’d see the Terastal mechanic lead to the return of delta species Pokemon but alas we didn’t get that. Ignoring the supply shortages of the past year, I’ve enjoyed pretty much the entirety of the SV series.
Destined Rivals, in particular, has been a fun of set for me. My boy Typhlosion has a viable deck again. Excluding Misty, the different trainer’s archetypes are all fun to play. I had a blast opening the Japanese Hot Air Arena and Glory of Team Rocket too, so DR’s placement feels appropriate to me.
I’ve enjoyed the sets themed around paradox Pokemon, Kitakami, and trainer’s Pokemon.
The Kanto and Unova sets are neat but a bit tiring for me.
SV base through and Obsidian Flames plus Stellar Crown are pretty average sets. I don’t love nor do I hate any of them.
I don’t care much for reprint sets. Paldean Fates was fine.
Prismatic Evolutions is dogshit. Crap pull rates, no regular IRs, product shortage, and a small(er) pool of uninteresting reprints makes it not very fun to open after the first 10 or so packs. My favorite cards from the set are Budew and the cards from the Generations Start Decks which are all common/cheap pulls.
Terastal Festival ex, the Japanese set that Prismatic is based upon, is a lot more satisfying to open repeatedly and would probably go into the B slot for me. A Japanese booster box guarantees one SIR pull. The larger pool of reprinted cards makes the pack opening experience more varied. Some of cards that were cut from PE, like Jirachi, looks really good with the poke ball / master ball texturing.
a lot of hate for Obsidian flames
ninetails, clefa, zard, and scizor all go hard. pull rates were fair and it was generally easy to find at retail
Gloom is great as well! I imagine the hate is from lack of set cohesion + zard fatigue, but it still brings a lot of good to the table!
