I’m also really curious how things play out in the long term. This tcg definitely has a place in history probably more as a cautionary tale. Wonder how things wil play out in terms as an actual collectible for metazoo
Ah, I did not consider that. Thank you. I guess that reduces the impact of the anecdote somewhat.
The title has “metazoo is dead selling my grails”
That’s not going to be written by AI
The description though is quite generic.
You can smell the anxiety behind this listing lol.
Title is certainly written by the seller. Description is almost certainly not.
I’m sure you’re aware of this button on ebay, but if not, it spits out a description usually taking information from the item specifics. The description this seller used is almost certainly written using this.
“It is in near mint or better condition and is ungraded. This card is a must-have for serious collectors”
These two sentences are in almost every AI generated description worded slightly different.
Everything comes to an end one day pokemon will aswell so just enjoy til then.
Gotta love the AI noone writes like it you can tell instantly. On my listings all I’ve done is the title and it takes bits from there and just mixes it up sometimes with nonsense. My very specific and precise one line title made into a word salad essay.
I thought the Topps Chrome cards were kinda cool.
Even if Pokemon decided to end the TCG, it wouldn’t be dead. Tons of people just genuinely enjoy the cards that are already out there.
@trevcatchem is correct. Title is written by the owner, but the entire description is AI generated from eBay’s new AI description editor.
Nevertheless, it is incredibly sad that people are selling their MetaZoo grails. They likely need the money back if it’s not going to hold its value.
I think there are a lot of TCG collectors in 2024 who would not continue collecting to such an extent if the cards held no value. This is one of the main issues that vintage MTG collectors had with Magic 30. They thought that reprinting reserved list items would devalue their vintage grails.
Did you buy into Metazoo? It certainly reads like it with all the caveats and excuses you are writing in for them for what was clearly an investobro scheme from the beginning.
Good things take time. There needs to be genuine interest in the product that is divorced completely from being an investment. It was more a get rich quick scheme and is more comparable to NFTs and crypto - MZ even have their own NFT project or something lol - than it ever was an attempt at a TCG.
Saying
is irrelevant because it can apply to everything. The reality is that the management made the decisions they made because they were modelled after a rug pull.
No, I didn’t buy into MetaZoo. I just don’t share the same opinions as everyone else here.
Thanks! I made you laugh!
Oh, just wait. I give Magic 10 years if Hasbro doesnt change it’s tune…
At least, maybe paper Magic.
Tbf it is possible that the whole ordeal just left a sour taste in their mouth. Like imagine getting into a tcg & all the way through is lies & broken promises. Then finally they put out a letter promising to make everthing right. Just for them to close shop a week later & the creator deletes all socials.
We’re pokemon collectors & when we look at our cards we’re reminded of years of great experiences. But Metazoo collectors can only see negativity in their cards. From mistreating the artists that made them to keeping loyal fans in the dark & abandoning them. I can understand not keeping them either, even as a passionate collector.
Honestly, fair. I can relate to that.
The warning signs were right there from day one for anyone serious enough to have a card like that one. I watched Squeaks get banned in real time on the metazoo discord for sharing too many suggestions. I was banned simply for joining and also being on the E4 discord (I guess? I never even said anything in their discord). There are videos of significant metazoo distributors being cut off for saying something negative in a private server that was leaked to the Metazoo Mike guy.
Anyone who paid even a little bit of attention knew that the Metazoo guy was an asshole, and incompetent as a leader. And apparently people thought the same thing about Andy. If something was really scarred over all these negative experiences, it’s interesting how it was only the indicator that metazoo is no longer be a financial vehicle that got them to sell. The mass quitting of artists and unpaid players amd failed product release apparently not a problem for them, but knowing that metazoo has no long-term future did matter.
Everything you just said here tells the opposite of the point you’re trying to make. Why would anyone invest in such an awful company & brand? Why would someone who’s only in it for the money stick around for that long after all of that? Surely there has to be love there to tolorate it all for this long?
I’ve been following this whole situation through Nick’s Strength & Pkmn. He’s been calling out Metazoo for over a year while being one of the biggest collectors. He’s currently auctioning his grails as well such as his 1/1 mothman he paid $12k for.
He’s been nothing but critical of Metazoo & told all of his followers that it’s a sinking ship. But still bought that mothman afterwards. He said he did because he wanted to show that he still supported Metazoo & genuinely loved it. He said he fully intended to keep even if Metazoo failed in the end. But how it died with no closure & abandoning supporters made him no longer want it.
Some of the guys selling grails still intend to buy Metazoo when booster boxes are rock bottom to open. I just think the characterization that everyone selling atm was just some greedy investor only in it for money is unfair. There genuinely was a good amount of people that liked the game & wanted it to be something. We can’t just judge like that. But my perspective is different because I’ve been watching Metazoo vids for awhile & seen the community a bit more.
