RIP Metazoo? (Sept 2024 update)

I could have gone without seeing that.

Omg I kinda hope it’s true too. I am dying at the idea of Waddell saying some dramatic shit like, “I AM METAZOO” and then hitting send on his discord message.

Hmm?

Who said that?

UnlistedLeaf became an MZ shill?

I mean if anyone wants to understand why there’s a general resentment on e4 to metazoo, it’s because stuff like this how we were introduced to it.

Unfortunately I think the vast majority of people were introduced to it in a similar way. It was almost entirely spread through collectors and hype beasts and it was hurt by that in the long run. Its the same reason why NFTs were so polarising on here. If they had started smaller and walked before they tried to run maybe it would be a different story. I hope that the serious collectors still manage to enjoy it for as long as possible and you never know, there might be something in the future for the IP.

MZ art was always a big pile of crap to me. I can’t see what people liked about it, besides nostalgia ofc

I got tagged a couple times and probably won’t write a wall long enough to share it all here but I genuinely enjoy MetaZoo. From the start the idea of public domain intertwined into an IP was a novel idea. Bigfoot has some celebrity in my neck of the woods. I pursued it similar to the way I did Pokemon (started with a fixed amount of capital and “profited” in product via flipping (bad hourly wage in hindsight RIP)). Hope it continues on in some way supposedly some announcements are pending per the OP announcement. I had no notice in advance of the announcement and I have no insider info besides the same rumors seem to be shared in here. I was able to find a niche with a low cost basis as a partner and was having fun and doing well being really the only mass ripper/singles seller around. I’ve tried some MTG, YGO, DBS, all kinds of other cards and nothing else ever clicked for me. It isn’t anywhere near Pokemon but it is fun for me to engage with.

I like the boxes, unique wrapping and some actual security measures I wish pokemon would add. I like the unique holo by set. I like the chase and the “uncheatable” nature of serialized cards (pkonno wouldnt like that part of it). Serialized cards are about ubiquitous these days in cardboard and I think Pokemon will only hold out so long. They already have serialized and limited merch (watches, master balls, skateboards) I guess if you count those Bear walker cards we have non tcg serialized cards. I would welcome it but I get the cons and the reasons people don’t like it. The ultimate chase that comes from it knowing any pack you open can be something crazy is fun. Last night I pulled a box topper that is 1 out of 250 booster boxes. Formerly $10k probably $10 now :skull_and_crossbones: .

I understand and agree with some of the complaints against Metazoo most seemed to be in their leadership which as far as I understand will change if anything continues. The other stuff I thought was largely overblown and I have a hard time understanding how any TCG could have come out when MetaZoo did and not suffer a similar fate (cardboard superbubble blowing it up too big to ultimately bring it to its demise). Went real quick from artificial scarcity, underprinting to stonk intentionally to overprinted and dead. Metazoo didnt even fully fund its kickstarter and I hear this week there are others doing $1MM+ within days. It is nowhere near 2020/2021 but we are still in a wild and in my opinion unsustainable time for cardboard. I think a lot has to and will change to get back to some semblance of normalcy and I think that will come with a lot of pain to some people not prepared (many already left as some of the free pandemic tendies did).

Super weird too some of the hate it gets. It’s fine to not like something and it isn’t surprising many people won’t like it, but to have to so actively hate something and feel the need to shout it from the rooftops all the time is just so odd. It is too common of a personality trait you see a lot these days. Loud social media minority stuff I guess as with anything.

Topps, Bandai, and Cardass pokemon cards ended decades ago and they’re fetching higher prices now than ever before. They weren’t event TCG’s just collectibles. This just goes back to the need for there to be a genuine interest beyond stonks investment moonboy shit.

Not sure why this is aimed at me. They aren’t fetching higher prices than ever before the peak came and went lol.

Bandai carddass prisms are only now reaching all time highs… have a look at recent sales and auctions. Who knows why it was directed at you though, i dont even recall the context. Lol

I will show you on the Quaxly where Metazoo hurt me

the direction of marketing the game is a large part of why it gets so much disrespect imo. it felt like a ponzi scheme from the start.

So is it dead or did Bandai buy it? IMO, being bought and ran by Bandai is a fate worse than death.

Could be worse. Could be Hasbro.

Im really not trying to throw shade, what exactly is a buyout going to do here? Usually buyouts are of viable companies. Weren’t they hurting for awhile? How would a buyout magically make people pay more for boxes they weren’t already for months on end? I feel like the bad ownership narrative is a copium distraction from the real core problem of inorganic ip.
