What sports are you planning to follow during next couple weeks and what are your overall expectations with this event?
Haven’t taken a good look in schedule yet but my picks are probably going to be skeet/trap competitions of women/men ( couple finnish participants there ), men’s javelin and other track&field stuff.
I’m so excited for the olympics, i’ll be looking forward to weightlifting, mens 100m, 200m, 4x100m, volleyball, mens basketball and womens 50m/100m freestyle the most
I’m definitely going to watch football the most, and already watched some games I’m really hoping for Brazil to do well at their home Olympics in general, I’m a huge fan of the country not gonna lie.
Spent our vacation last week with our girl Kimmy Rhode in Big Bear Lake, California. It was a fun send off. She’s going for a medal in her 6th straight Olympics. She’s had 3 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze.
I believe she’s the first US athlete to qualify for the Olympics on 5 different continents. Now if she can medal in Rio that would be amazing.
Rough start yesteday, draw against South Africa wasn’t the result they wanted in first game. I’m sure they’ll improve their game in upcoming matches just to prevent similar fiasco like 2014 world cup was.
I’m sure they will improve as well @nauticads, the team is quite new so they are still learning to play together so it will get better from time to time. There were some really great elements on the game but South Africa wasn’t bad either. Biggest problems seem to be finalizing, often there was a lack of Brazilian players close to the goal when needed. Defense could be a bit better too in certain ways. I’m confident they will improve game by game so let’s see how it goes
Does anyone else feel that this Olympics has been rather low key so far in terms of hype? I remember for both the London and Beijing games there seemed to be alot more excitement in the build up compared to this. Also the bad publicity has already started what with the sailing/outdoor swimming waters being potentially disease ridden and also the Australian team boycotting the village due to it not being up to standard. I really hope they have a successful games however and will be looking forward to the 100m final alot.
Yes, this is a concern. Though I remember the Munich massacre in the early 70s. As devastating as that was we bounced back well in the subsequent games. I guess it’s because we “need” the Olympics. The distraction. The pride.
Hype is hard to generate when there is so much legitimate negativity around the games this year.
Zika Virus
Water quality being so poor that they have advised athletes to not open their mouths in the water
Olympic Village being basically in squoller and many countries opting to find their own accommodations
Athletes getting mugged in the street because Rio is a crime riddled shithole
The country being able to spend money on a Soccer World Cup and an Olympic Games within a 3 year period while a significant percentage of their population live in ghetto’s.
Having said all that I love the Olympic Games and will be watching as many events as I can. I always enjoy the Gymnastics and the Track and Field events. Shooting is surprisingly thrilling too. I always try and watch the Archery as well, I did it when I was younger.
Brazil has “winter” now so zika virus is not going around there anymore, that shouldn’t be a danger. It’s too “cold” there right now to be ideal for the mosquito which spreads the virus.
Plus I don’t see what is the problem with the Olympic village, it looks luxurious out there even so I don’t know where are the complaints coming from. I’m not completely unbiased but I do get some information from Brazil so I just wonder why people are complaining that much.
But yeah, there are some problems that nobody can deny. Brazilians never were that great with deadlines… Plus I’m afraid “bandidos” (people who live for making crimes in Brazil) will attack some tourists as they know there are going to be wealthier people around. Rio is beautiful but you have to know where you are walking and stay alert.
Also, when Rio was chosen to be a host the country was in so much better financial state than it is right now so that might explain a few things…
This! So much has happened since then. The World Cup did not earn and meet expectations. I know there was a ton of complaining in regards to funding for that tournament 2 years ago, and can’t imagine how doubling down with the olympics will help.
I am still excited though for the tournament. Hopefully the controversy and/or other issues wont be too problematic.
I always love it when someone from some tiny nation somewhere wins a medal, or even better a gold. Those nations with a population of like 10,000 who send 2 athletes.
