QotD: What is your “Never in a million years” card that even if you had the money, you wouldn’t buy?

I’m gonna second a few opinions here. Probably grey felt hat Pikachu. I had plenty of opportunity to buy it when it was cheaper and chose not to bc the whole release fiasco really rubbed me the wrong way. Also cards like protostoise and pre release Raichu. Cursed cards w a history of people getting burned, same with prototypes

Its been funny since getting back into cards mainly Poke last 5-6 years now and seeing Deoxys and other newer Pokemon. I see so much similarity to to other franchises Blizzard Entertainment comes to mind I could spit out a few others. Maybe its just me but it feels the newer regions and amount keeps going up instead of focusing on being more creative with less. I’m not trying to be negative.

I enjoy some new Pokemon but there could have been so many cool gen 1 / 2 … insert gen ___ card. I think it also has to do with tossing out older employees / artists who started it to teach the newer whether certain characters would be a good fit to the game. Then relying too heavily on software vs pencil and paper. I was always a little into art myself not heavy but I did cartoons & sketches so I do have a basic understanding of creating something from scratch.

Also, copying others through repetition to learn is frowned upon in alot of academics / Careers but actually thats many times how we learn its seen in math and sciences. I’m glad there is still fan art cards that seem to blow away most cards being made by Nintendo even with so much tech now being used to create games n cards.

I could go into other branches related to this but this is already long winded.

  • Poncho/Theme Pikachus (would maybe grab a Luigi just for giggles if I had stupid money)
  • Pikachu Illustrator
  • Any signed card
  • Moon/Sunbreon
  • 99.9% waifu/husbando trainer IRs/SIRs (not impressed with the artwork for almost all of them)

3 out of those 5 cards I would get, also all of those cards are expensive, so would it be bold to assume price bias?

I think most of the trophy cards fall under that category for me, in particular for their price point and the fact that most of the arts are incredibly mid regardless.

I understand at some level that it’s history being preserved. At the same time, it isn’t a trophy I won/earned which would make the sentiment of owning it a lot more for me.

I really hope it’s only scalpers buying those things at 2k each…

Pokemon Illustrator, I think the history behind it is cool but that’s all most people would know me for, just that one guy who owns a “pikachu” illustrator this goes for most cards that are extremely popular I’d rather own an obscure collection than a collection that is only appreciated because of what others think about it

I’ll admit there is a level of price bias in there, but for me it’s the artwork more than that. I’ve always thought the moon/sunbreons are okay, but the art doesn’t blow me away anywhere near enough to make me consider pursuing it even if I had the money. Same with the ponchos honestly, they just look a little too cookie-cutter to me.

I remembered when I changed my pfp from the pikachu illustrator to what it is now multiple people were upset. There is definitely some association even if its unintentional.

Regardless, I still think it’s a beautiful card. Even if it were birthday pikachu quantity I love the history and unique art, its so cozy!

Poncho pikachu’s - i remember back in the day it got released in japan, lot of them were sitting on shelfs. Never thought of buying one back than and same goes for it today

Grey felt pikachu, mcdonald pikachu, korean ditto promo - the fiasco when it got released just showed how much greed has taken over the hobby, never touching it

English modern chase - the trouble of getting one english product is just impossible i had to pass. I might gor for destined rivals but probably thats it.

Wiafu pokemon cards - i understand waifu cards from other franchises but not for pokemon…never undestood how it got so hyped up…

I like the earlier full arts, like the Maxie/Archie, Pokemon Center Lady, and Ingo & Emmet, mostly because the artwork felt ‘true’ to the characters to me (comically bold, kind, and goofy/serious respectively).

But most of the newer ones seem to just not click for me like Iono, Lillie, and Mela, maybe because it feels more like they’re just going for ‘cute’ or ‘pretty’ as opposed to in-character (I think Iono was a missed opportunity by not having her stream setup instead of her taking a selfie with a mukbang for her SIR, and Lillie and Mela feel like they went a little too close to the ‘please remember this is a minor’ route - big ick for me that accounts to the vast majority of the character cards for me).

Some modern cards have done a great job to me though, like Giovanni has been getting some great artwork in 151 and Destined Rivals.

Tbh, I gave it some thought, but I honestly can’t think of anything.

Assuming money truly isn’t an issue at all (e.g. infinite amount of money for any Pokémon TCG card, and still enough money left for life itself), there would be some popular cards that are pretty low on my then fictional wanted list, like Trophy cards; the Pokémon Illustrator; a PSA-10 Base Set card; etc. Still, even those I wouldn’t mind owning eventually. :person_shrugging:
Although in my experience of collecting all Pikachu cards, availability is usually a much bigger issue than prices in collecting niche cards.

My first thought kinda went to for example these ugly Stunfisk or Barbaracle cards:

But if money truly isn’t an issue, collecting all cards in all languages would be pretty cool theoretically lol, in which case I’d even want these ugly cards of Pokémon I don’t even like in foreign languages like French, Korean, etc.

I understand some people might have cards they would never want, no matter what, but I honestly never had that. Whether it’s certain type of errors or autographed cards; Sample/prototype cards; non-English/non-Japanese cards; trophy cards; etc. Even cards with questionable history, like the Legendary catdog trio Gold Stars or the (supposedly handful of real) 1995 prototypes, I wouldn’t mind owning at all.

But again, if money is out of the equation, the necessary time to buy all those cards and the availability of niche cards would still be a pretty big issue to truly Collect 'Em All. :person_shrugging: And storage space (and security), I guess.

Quuador
