QotD: If you could be your own gym leader, what type would you specialize in, and what would your gym be like?

You know the gym is around here somewhere, your map says so. And your rival keeps calling you to tell you about the cool badge they received from it.

All you see though is a field of butterfly bushes. It’s very peaceful. You start to hear a sort of whooshing sound. Maybe more like a flapping? It sounds like it’s getting closer. All of a sudden, from behind the clouds, you see gym leader Will approaching from the back of a Dynamaxed Butterfree! It lowers itself into the field, and you see on it’s back it has gym markings, pretty cool patterning.

Here comes a bug battle

I like this!
I’ve always liked how the Orange Islands in the anime weren’t regular PokĂ©mon battles, but races; accuracy test; mountain climbing; rescuing a lost Lapras; etc. It was unique and refreshing, and still a great Gym test imo.

And the things you mentioned are also useful to learn for later in life.

When I read the thread, I immediately thought of a Poison-Type gym (Seviper as my ace, and in addition perhaps Drapion; Beedrill; Dragalge; Haunter; Toxtricity - most duo-types, for Dark; Bug/Flying; Water/Dragon; Ghost; Electric, plus Poison, respectively), and where contestants had to fight me in pairs 2vs1, on the condition that the contestants that paired up wouldn’t know each other beforehand. Something to test their teamwork with a random stranger.
Ideally, my Gym therefore would be located in a rather busy area, since I wouldn’t want a singular contestant to wait possible multiple days before a second contestant to pair up. I’d likely also had one or more assistants, who could team up with a single constant if it called for it.

The goal wouldn’t be to just defeat me, but to work together well while doing so, no matter who’d you’d be teamed up with. And I’d score and give badges based on how well both of them performed.

E.g. if one contestant would be a very good Trainer that could beat me solo, but is very arrogant and doesn’t work together with the other contestant, I’d deny their badge and give the other contestant that didn’t get a good chance to do anything a rematch with someone else.

Everyone here is so creative, it’s been a treat to see all you aspiring gym leader’s ideas!

For my gym, I’d like to be stationed somewhere very sunny (maybe Lilycove city in Hoenn as there isn’t a current gym there for example). Challengers might expect the leader to be fire type, water perhaps as a coastal city, or even grass. However, much to their (probable) surprise, they’d fine my gym to specialize in the dark type.

The gym will be two floors. When you arrive, the top floor is almost completely dark barring a path to a ladder that leads to the basement. In the basement, you’ll discover the gym puzzle- this would involve a sundial puzzle in which by defeating the gym trainers you’ll be given clues as to where to position it so that eventually you can light up the top floor to uncover a secret room where you will battle me.

My team is a dark type sun-team (I’m going for theme over optimal competitiveness). You’ll also need to be prepared to face me in a double battle- I need to be a least a little devious!
Sableye and liepard are here for prankster sunny day, fake out, and general support. Incineroar is, well, Incineroar. I’m running a dark-type doubles team with sunny day support- Incineroar made too much sense not to include : )
Skuntank is here primarily for its typing, but with access to a surprising amount of fire moves (including sunny day), I thought it’d be a nice inclusion. Shiftry is here as a chlorophyll user that can hopefully get the jump on unsuspecting challengers. Finally, my ace would be mega houndoom- her solar power heat waves and dark pulses may make my opponent’s have not so much fun in the sun.
Plus, she has a tendency to plot and plan- nasty ones at that!

Victorious challengers will receive the eclipse badge and the tm for dark pulse and sunny day, as a double battle should offer double the reward!
