It is also one of my favorite ex cards. I wanted it terribly as a kid and remember my disappointment that the FRLG fire deck with Charmeleon on it somehow didn’t contain Charizard! This and the gold star were huge deals and the chase Charizards that I remember best.
I was never able to get the Charizard ex so I overcompensated the past few years haha. I was hoping to go for ten PSA 10 but ended up with five. This year they all ended up in new homes since I abandoned my PSA 10 ex dreams. Fortunately the funds furthered my Chansey collection. Now that I’ve crossed the hardest Chanseys off the list I’m considering getting a personal copy again.
@randox value wise sure. But I am happier with the cards I was able to get. Which is more important. For example I traded mostly PSA 10 Charizards for my Snap Chansey. I’d estimate the cards traded are worth around $100k now. So what lol I have a Snap Chansey now. And by selling the exs over the summer I was able to get the No 1 Chansey trophy. Now I can keep a Charizard ex that I purchase for myself. At least until someone with a Shadowless Chansey PSA 10 decides they are willing to trade for Charizards haha.
My goals in the hobby have been (not listed in order of importance):
1 - Collect WOTC in the best condition that makes sense for my budget
2 - Collect all the Japanese exclusive cards during the same era in the best condition that makes sense for my budget
3 - Collect my favorite Trophy cards that are within my budget (while accepting the fact that no one can collect them all - after all, some trophy cards are 1 of 1)
4 - Collect all the Bulbasaur cards
5 - Collect some random cards I like from any era
This Charizard definitely fits the bill for #5.
As for trying to re-grade it as a BGS 10, I don’t think I’ll bother. Looking at the card, the sub-grades seem exactly right. Perfect centering and surface, almost perfect edges and corners but 1 of the 4 edges wasn’t cut *perfectly* and 1 of the 4 corners has a very tiny white speck.
I do think it would have a good shot to cross-grade as a PSA 10 although I can’t say that with 100% confidence. I might even ask PSA to cross-grade it while still in the BGS case. Normally I would never do that, but given the near BGS 10 status of the card I think PSA might be a more willing to grade it a PSA 10 while still in the BGS case.
Just wondering what the Japanese PSA 10 Fire Red Leaf Green Charizard EX would be selling for currently?
Opinions on whether unlimited or 1st Edition are more desirable?
Also could someone kindly explain the card can be labelled Fire Red Leaf Green, Charizard Starter Deck and Flight Of the Legends although the card looks exactly the same in every label!
Anyway enough questions! Thanks in advance
The label differences are really just PSA making mistakes. The correct designation is Charizard Starter Deck as the card was only obtainable in the deck. However, the deck was released alongside the Japanese Flight of Legends set, which became Fire Red Leaf Green in English. PSA often mixes up the correct Japanese set names with English or goes with the English name when the Japanese one is difficult to fit on the label (e.g. Furthest Ends of Offense and Defense is just Dragon Frontiers). I’ve seen that Flight of Legends in particular is one that they mess up a lot.
1st edition is definitely rarer and should be worth more. I’m not up to date on recent sale prices but I’d think there would be a significant premium.
Thanks for the info. So just to be clear are they all the same cards with 2 differences one in 1st Edition and Unlimited or Fire Red Leaf Green/Starter Deck 1st Edition/Unlimited AND Flight of Legends 1st Edition/Unlimited?
It’s just that if you use PSA verify they recognise a Charizard Flight of the Legends label as a different card to Charizard Fire Red Leaf Green/Starter Deck label.
I’ve always been unsure about this and wasn’t sure if the Flight of the Legends was a rare limited print as the POP is low.
Anyway hopefully the above makes sense!
The Power Keepers Charizard also went very high $4.6k. Hmmm. If Charizard hype is spreading to ex series it’s tempting to test the waters with a gold star on pwcc. Hasn’t been a public auction sale in nearly four months. Main concern is that a high sale will increase the cost of other gold stars I’d want to get with the money anyway. (If you’re reading this I’m happy to trade a Charizard for others LOL, main priority is Gyarados).
I was pretty hyped about this since I recently had mine graded a 10 in August. Although I suppose I’m not looking to sell, still nice to know it’s value
