Major props for CGC for writing a very well researched article and making it public, this is something I wish PSA would implement. Intentions aside I don’t care if it the article was commissioned to sell the cards these sort of informational articles are hugely important for the collecting community. Pokemon is especially plagued by claims with no evidence so this is something I am very happy to see.
Also I think it was made pretty clear about how many times this card was offered at various events and mentioned in several videos. It’s interesting that a new grading company that’s trying to validate itself is taking the chance on such a risky card that obviously has several people very motivated to inflate the price for many years straight…
Full disclosure, I only paid CGC the normal rate for them to grade a card, it’s actually my first card I’ve ever submitted for grading/authenticating, too. If there was extra incentive, it likely would have come from Heritage, or because of heritage, rather., But, as far as I’m aware, CGC didn’t know about the white backed card until they were in the process of getting mine or had mine and were working on getting the other two in the same place. The information about that copy is really unknown, other than what’s in the article, secondhand, but even Heritage hasn’t had it for very long. As far as I can tell, this was done completely of their own free will and grace, and I assume it was because they are still new to the grading market, and are looking for ways to propel their status. I’m not really sure what kind of numbers that would involve, but whatever it is, I don’t have it.
But I’ll admit, I was pretty down on the card for a long time because of all of the negativity, and if it wasn’t for the tip from Tavis, that CGC was going to start grading cards and I should see what they say, then Tavis bringing the copy he had to their HQ meeting right before their process, and them expressing interest in taking a look at mine, I would have likely let it go last year.
@gemmintpokemon was actually extremely close to getting it just a week before I mailed it in to CGC.
Haha, feel free to PM me and I’ll give you my PayPal.
I also accept signed Efour cards as donations (in which case I’ll give you my address). If you want I can send one signed by me in return (while supplies last ).
I agree, there are cards that are rarer then the illustrator that are worth much less.
The whole scenario seems to be driven by people looking to profit off the card. We have seen several crop up for sale in a short space of time since the CGC article, doesnt sit well to me. There is not much organic interest, lots of “L@@k how rare this isss, FIRST english card”. The illustrator has been at the top for years (Official release don’t forget) and that wont shift. But I am not the market so it may well sell high.
I must commend @quuador for his excellent research piece regardless.
CGC mentioned that the Galaxy Holofoil version with white back will be going on auction through Heritage in January in the comments of their Instagram posts.
And the other two copies I’ve seen available for sale on Facebook as well (on December 8th), but that post seems to have been removed now since I’m unable to find it now.
All the owners banded together in a coordinated effort to have CGC grade them and write an article, yet they never discussed the optimal way to sell after the fact. Instead let’s all just put our copies up together at the same time and compete against each other
I guess it’s one of those situations where the first sale is really difficult since it’s such a novelty and hard to value.
But also if not a single one of the owners wants to keep their card, it doesn’t exactly make me confident about it.
Seems kinda weird to me too. All of the owners selling their copy at the same time? I’m no high end buyer but that seems red-flaggy to me. Maybe they’re just trying to cash in on the tail end of the pokemon hype train
That’s me, and mine. I have it listed in many groups. I’ve received multiple offers at 100k so far, and one last night that is slightly below double. Benjamin has the other two. We’ve been talking, but he’s not super active online, and he had to take his listings down for personal reasons.
The Blank backed version is set for auction in 4 days on Heritage, and we have no idea who the real owner is of that, other than the CGC Article who said it’s from a former employee who dealt with product promotion or something.
Serious question, if you found a winning lottery ticket on the ground, unredeemed, would you cash it in, or hold on to it forever for sentimental value?
All of this talk of finance and speculation as to whether we’re greedy or shitty people because of your assumptions of our motives, is really sad. A large portion of the stuff that goes on in this group is focused around the financial aspect of Pokemon. The motives of members openly shitting on cards like this, was an effort to protect their own financial investments of genuine proven authentic & graded Pokemon cards. I don’t really know what you expect of me, but this constant bashing of my character is really unnecessary and the comments are pretty hypocritical at best.
The Author of this post, literally said he’s sad to hear that I posted the card for sale, then said he’s happy to take donations for putting the post together. I just don’t get it. This is asinine.
If you have a better idea of what I should do with it. PLEASE let me know. But as of right now, I’m in the position to trade it for a large down payment on a home for my family, and pay off the rest of my debts with a lot left over. I don’t think any sane or rational person in my position would turn that down. The difference is that I’m in the position, and likely none of you are or will be. You’re not me, but you’re happy to tell me what I am, and speculate as to what I should do.
First, how does anything anyone has said in this thread relate to other peoples cards and “protecting their investments”? That makes 0 sense. Second, someone asked the author of the post, @quuador, if they could donate
