To send something from Uk to Germany with Royal Mail costs £147 to insure it up to £2500.
The total sale price is for £2000, and the person has been messaging me on eBay and wants to do the deal - he is saying everything that he needs to to make me believe he is genuine (but they would wouldn’t they)
He’s uncomfortable to spend that £147 on insurance but states they do another cheaper option for around £15, they do - it’s tracked and signed for but it isn’t insured.
Would you hold out on the sale? Would you go ahead? Is there anything i could do to safeguard me?
Nervous selling this amount of cards - it’s for a house deposit and well, I just don’t want to be scammed.
what german cards did you sell him?
I think tracked is fine, I never had a problem or a missing item and I order stuff all over Europe. Even when I send stuff from Germany to Ludkins in the UK, I just take the tracked option without insurance and I send them high value cards.
Also you can’t get scammed if you have prove that you send the package and it’s tracked, the buyer even refuses to pay insurance so it’s his risk.
Insurance is for the seller not the buyer though. And geez that is an expensive postage cost!! If ebay/paypal side with the buyer then it could cause alot of issues for the seller. Just be careful, maybe contact ebay and ask for advise?
Insurance is not just something that covers you against scammers, it covers you against damage or loss of the item by the carrier.
You are sending an item that will be handled by two carriers in both the UK and Germany, increasing your odds of the item being mishandled or lost in transit. Even if the odds of it happening are extremely low, believe me, you don’t want to find yourself un-insured should the worst happen.
Also, Royal Mail is expensive, but they are by far my go to carrier as they have always been highly responsive when it comes to compensation over lost/damaged items. If you go with an alternative carrier make sure you read their fineprint.
I personally would negotiate with buyer and offer to split the bill for the £147 insurance, but in the end, if he doesn’t accept it, it’s up to you to decide whether to take such a huge risk.
I’m relatively new to selling on Ebay and i have recently come across this problem. What can you do to protect yourself from such a scenario? Do you have to just factor in the chance of this happening into your costs and then take it on the chin?
well that would be malicious. Anyways for such pricey items I always make pictures of the item inside the package and the package will always get weighed at the post office.
You could just take a picture and then swap the item out right? Also weighing the item as proof is surely pointless as any old collection of items could be brought to the same weight? The guy receiving the package is also going to be able to weigh it, and then send back a bunch of junk that weighs the same!
I have been thinking about this problem for the past week. I have managed to come up with no solution aside from having a legitimate 3rd party authenticate the item on your doorstep and then take it directly to wherever it needs to go.
if someone wants to scam you, he is gonna scam you no matter what. He could also damage the package and the item, and so on… but fortunately such malicious people are very rare and you could always take legal actions against them.
