A few months ago I started a discussion in my guilds Facebook group about other activities than playing the game. Some people (mostly the guys from East Euro/former Sovjets) laughed when I told them about my hobby of collecting Pokemon cards. Now the same guys pay high respect after seeing the Pawn Stars episode (or the clips) on Youtube, 9Gag and various other social media platforms. They were shocked by the fact cards can cost this much and it’s not just for little kids. I just hope they realized spending hard earned money on virtual items maybe isn’t the best thing to do anymore
Just shows how you, Gary, opened a door and let people look into the hobby.
I love at the end how earnest Rick is when Chum asks why he didn’t buy the charizard cards. Still a bit surreal seeing Pawn Stars opening packs and mentioning the World Championships.
I saw this! Perhaps if you do not understand something…learn!? There is obviously a market for these cards and Rick is missing out. Regardless of what you think of it, if you are in the business of making money, and you deal with other collectibles and cards, I think it would be wise to familiarize yourself (at least a little) in the pokemon market…
I completely agree, but I think Rick is also faking everything a bit. He keeps saying Pokémans on purpose, because any sane person wouldn’t make that mistake more than two times after he’s been told it’s Pokémon instead of Pokéman. And it’s also a bit of TV view count value when Chum has to educate Rick something about a child’s game.
Having said that, I completely agree with what you are saying. Rick deals with baseball cards all the time, and Pokémon may be newer, it is essentially the same: a popular trading card game for young and old, and where you can find a lot of money in, and even more in the future. I mean, if we look at some of those 100k+ cards for baseball, I’m very curious what we will see for Pokémon in the future. Only time will tell, but I think Pokémon still has decades ahead, and one day we’ll think back to 2017 when an XY Evolutions Prerelease STAFF Charizard was ‘only’ 250-450 USD.
Well said guys but I have to come to Ricks defense a little. As some of you know he’s a neighbor of mine also.
Had the items been in the 1000-5000 range he would probably deal but for half a million he gets very nervous;)
On the down side, he’s made millions from this show AND his store revenue has gone up a lot so he doesn’t have to be involved in that way anymore.
That is a cool video, that is what this should be about, sharing cards and the experience with other. Maybe this, along with the paw star episode can start to push the hobby toward becoming more of a mainstream collectible!
Oh on side note, and I am not accusing this video of this, I am so freaking sick of the standard unboxing and pack opening videos in which that is all that is offered…open pack rinse repeat. There are only so many cards in a set… you know the saying…once you have seen one, you pretty much seen them all.
