Everyone saying legendary collection overrated, i didn’t realise it was actually rated in the first place.

Overrated: Sets in general
Underrated: Artists, certain unique rarities
Most sets have barely any theming and are not worth collecting as a ‘set’.
The only real consistency are artists and occasionally certain rarities like the late-XY gold URs - but then, all those were also the same artist (Arita). Even things like Amazing Rares/Radiants etc which should all have a higher collectability and consistency clash with each other.
Perhaps the only real collectable set is Double Crisis.

My goodness, you people are killing me saying Neo Destiny overrated. 
Overrated: Gym Challenge, any base set iteration other than 1st edition base
Underrated: Neo revelation, Gym heroes, Expedition (do I need to put Neo Destiny here too? Haha)

I love Neo Destiny but agree the shinings are overblown, I heard they were incredibly rare in jp but I see 2+ per English bb, they’re not that rare and the holo portions are so small that damaging them is a lot harder to do accidentally than others with large foil portions.
For me, overrated is probably base set. They’re cards I love and have a lot of nostalgia for but the cg ones look awful and there’s not a huge variety in the art - mostly Ken Sugimori stock art, which isn’t a bad thing but they’re largely unimaginative due to the generic nature.
Underrated, I’d go with Neo Discovery.
Overshadowed by Genesis by many big hitters, Revelation for Celebi/Beasts/Shining and Destiny for Light/Dark/Shinings, the set has some seriously wonderful cards and I’m very fond of it. You only really hear people mention the Umbreon and Espeon, but there’s some beautiful arts in this.

To say in my opinion that TRR is such a good set that it is the best set out of not just any other ex era set, but any other dp era set as well. Just explaining that I think it TRR is better than every other similar set from around that time period in the tcg since DP era sets are similar to ex era sets with the lv. x cards and somewhat comparable.
Overrated… wotc e-series sets. I just can’t get behind the big yellow boarders. They don’t even feel like wotc to me. I don’t know why.
Underrated… fire red and leaf green. Love the kanto call back. Plus I remember buying a few packs when they came out and I was 11 and feeling so excited about Pokémon again.

Overrated:
Neo Destiny- without Shinings, it’s a mid Neo set.
Ex Deoxys - rarity of the set doing most of the lifting.
Ex Emerald - middle of the road Ex era artwork.
Ex TRR - art tries and fails to emulate TR properly.
XY Flashfire - nothing but Charizard hype.
Burning Shadows - poorer Charizard hype.
Evolving Skies - too much stonk surrounding this one.
Underrated:
Neo Discovery - would be a popular one if it had some heavy hitters besides Espeon & Umbreon.
Expedition - so many big cards & beautiful artworks…every bit as good as Aquapolis & Skyridge.
Ex Sandstorm - fantastic set theme & artworks.
Ex Dragon - good art & wide selection of Pokémon getting attention.
Ex Delta Species - set theme nails it & unique holo pattern pops better than any other DS set.
Ex Legend Maker - lovely mix of art styles & fantastic reverse holo pattern.
Entire DP Era - lots and lots of beautiful cards going largely ignored from this era.
Cosmic Eclipse - so many great artworks & cool Tag Team combos.
Paldea Evolved - loads of amazing illustration rares that are largely going ignored.

Underrated: Celebrations - i) each card in the set has incredible history ii) it is a timeless set highlighting 25 years of amazing cards iii) the higher pull rates make for such a fun opening experience

im interested to know why some people are considering ex emerald overrated?
As someone who had a box until very recently, it was never really considered a fan favorite set and if it didnt have milotic there would be no discussion around it at all as far as I am aware. I personally really like the set composition for the gen 3 vibes and reverse pattern etc etc, but to see it as overrated by more than one person surprises me

Hidden Legends was a good set, and so was FRLG. Some of the last sets I collected before I stopped. I still have my Banette with a sweet swirl in my binder that is a PSA 10 contender.
Underrated in my opinion: EX Team Rocket Returns.

I wouldn’t consider Ex Emerald a bad set, just a solid middle of the road one from the era.
It does get brought up quite often in discussions about the best Ex Era sets though, which seems strange because, as you say, it was never a fan favourite…maybe because it released straight after TRR & Ex Deoxys, people are equating it closer to the level of those sets now?
That’s mainly why I added it to the list of overrated sets.
I’ve seen more discussion around it since ethe public box sale hit 16k but milotics pop has gone way up and that was it’s best selling point imo. It’s super scarce though but I still don’t really hear people claiming it’s great
Yeah, could well be that the box sale is the reason it’s received more attention. I’ve definitely heard people talk Ex Emerald up more than the likes of Sandstorm, Hidden Legends, Unseen Forces & Power Keepers; this is enough to class it as overrated in my eyes.
I should’ve actually added Ex Unseen Forces to the list of underrated sets. The reverse pattern, Gen 2 starters, eeveelutions & Ho Oh/Lugia make that set one hell of a solid one.
Anyone who says neo destiny is overrated takes a good moment to look at all the light pokemon cards and then comes back to apologize me.

Underrated: Shadowless base set, probably never going to change.
Overrated: Evolving skies, not a bad set but hyped too much by the stonkers.

I think shadowless is pretty well known to be rarer than unlimited. I just think it doesn’t get the recognition for possibly having one print run alongside 1st ed.

It will always be niche. Everyone can understand a first ed stamp and everyone had unlimited growing up. Shadowless requires explanation to understand which makes it tougher to collect.

Very true but i take a shadowless psa 9 holo for 200 instead of an unlimited for 100 any day of the week. For most psa 9 shadowless holos i would have even payed double the current prices so i really like it being underrated / niche.
