I think a lot of the answers will be the same, but let´s see anyway.
For clarity; classic means, the sets will be very sought after, like Base Set.
For me it would go like;
151 (this set is pretty much modern Base Set)
Evolving Skies (Moonbreon as an iconic chase)
Cosmic Eclipse (while it is cheaper than Team Up, because it was printed more, I think the fact that this is the first Trainer Gallery and the overall set will at some point put it higher).
I am more nostalgic to SWSH than SV era. Covid lockdowns made each SWSH set release such a big deal. I remember the night S6a alt alts were being shared. It was one heck of a night.
I think over time modern sets and eras get blended together a bit and nothing can quite have the vintage feel
Yeah, kind of agree. But I do think sets like Sw/Sh 7/8/9/10/11/12 will be sought after by all the people coming in in those months. It kind of felt like 1999 all over again.
I have to say from personal experience, I WILL look back at Cosmic Eclipse as the one that set the hook for me again. Sure I was buying singles from base but that set I 1. Couldn’t hardly find EVEN back then and 2. Lust after it now, kicking myself for not completing it, let alone ‘investing’ in it.
Is this English or all languages- basically Japanese included lol?
There’s no objective way that things like Evolving Skies or Cosmic Eclipse are great sets.
The reason vintage sets were good was because you had the chance to pull most of the hits in a single booster box. Anything from SM onwards (but probably BW on) has terrible pull rates, lacks identity and has so much secret rare bloat.
I’d nominate Black Bolt and White Flare for being an almost complete tribute to Gen 5 but it also has shit pull rates.
Otherwise it has to be VSTAR Universe, the only set that gives you ARs and a guaranteed SAR.
I think the problem looking at most of modern sets is that there are like 1 or 2 chase cards and that’s it. So I think Lost Abyss is a meh set but the Giratina is amazing.
My top 3 modern sets that stand out as a whole especially looking back at them after 20 years are:
Vstar Universe (it’s a fun set to open, there are tons of AR and SAR, a godpack, gold cards and really great chases too. I think it’s something for everyone).
Japanese 151 (I think a lot of people came back into the hobby with this set and there are plenty of great cards in it plus the chase of the reverse holos).
Hard to say. I think modern TCG sets lack identity, especially when you have stuff like Glory of Team Rocket from the Japanese side getting combined with multiple other sets. Stuff like that has sort of destroyed set identity and made pull rates so much worse for cards you actually want to pull.
There’s a good reason you mostly see “x was such a peak set” from investors after a set has recently stopped printing. Modern collecting is mostly just gambling for the hits (I like the normal holos and reverses, most people do not).
I really think in a lot of ways S/V and ME is going to be a black hole in the history of the hobby, because everything in this era is getting artificially “hyped” and inflated in desirability by outside forces.
It is inherently a combination of two Owner’s Pokémon sets, so its identity as an Owner’s Pokémon set is preserved. Atsushi Furusawa even illustrated the pack art for both Heat Wave Arena and The Glory of Team Rocket so they could be combined. It’s just that people forever view Destined Rivals from the side of The Glory of Team Rocket because that is what they prefer, not the Rivals part

Another example is Surging Sparks which combined 2 sets about the Stellar mechanic and Dragon Pokémon from the SV DLC, Paradise Dragona & Super Electric Breaker - but it is viewed only as a Pikachu set
Hm, don´t really agree with that. I think especially Black & White sets were quite small. If you look at a set like Emerging Powers, you had 2 chase cards. XY had some more, but not a lot.
Black & White Dark Explorers, Next Destinies and Dragons Exalted, but also the Plasma sets had some great set identity as well. If we´re talking Sun & Moon onwards, it get´s messier, but I do think a set like Cosmic Eclipse has some nice set identity, and Team Up as well.
