Oldschool Japanese pokemon card holo foil / print patterns?

Hi Guys,

I’m sure many are aware that some of the older Japanese cards are notorious to have some little printing differences.

I.E like the topsun prism foil differences, or no rarities… even spelling errors in japanese.

But i am sure people have also noticed in the past how some Japanese cards have grey foil patterns coming through the front coloured surface of the card. Mainly from 1996-2000 ish.

Below is a couple examples of what i’m talking about.

What would you guys consider this to be?

Is this an error?

Is this a misprint?

Is the ink just running out on the printer?

is this just a pokeball next to the fire energies? To me, there is an obvious faint pokeball-like shape next to the fire energy bottom left of the charizard. It is so weird as i have never seen one this big before so abrupt.

Here is an example of a card recently returned:

This is an example of an older card i had where there is obvious grey circles coming through, it’s quite common for many of the foils to have this, but i just wanted to know what people would class it as? as i am unsure how to describe it.

Thanks for those who are interested in reading.

Good thread!

I have the cd promo big 3 and two of them have the cosmo foil spilled onto the whole card, which looks just like the grey spots in your Lugia, mine shines though haha,

Pretty cool if you ask me, however some collectors do not consider this to be an Error,

I agreee to an extent but it clearly is a manufacturing default simply because it’s not supposed to be printed like that, therefore In my opinion it is a subtle error,

Obviously there are much more intense errors such as base set Wartortle evo box error which will always prevail as a true error,

The pokeball on zard looks cool, very unique

I always thought this was the norm for old japanese cards. I remember seeing that as a kid and thinking it looked like somebody spilled water on the cards. Didn’t know there were versions without the bleed.

Oh yeah, that is the name i forgot. Cosmo or galaxy pattern that has came around.

That is a good way to word it as a manufacturing default.

I remember the name of the foil tape is from royal something or other… i forget these details sometimes. Do you remember the name of the producer for the holofoil tape. There was a thread years ago on it.

yeah, it is pretty common to see some sort of bleeding like this, but i sort through quite alot of bulk and i think more cards are printed normally rather than with bleeding.

Yeah Cosmo/Galaxy they call it, standard for old Japanese cards,

I don’t know the specifics on who produced the tape,
I do think it is a cool default though for sure I am happy with mine, I had this conversation with Smpratte and he believes this is a common thing with the older Japanese cards, I have noticed it more and more recently therefore I have to agree with his opinion,

Error or not, I am still a fan!
