Official Nintendo Promo Cards

I hope so very much, even the elekid on box didn’t pop up yet.
And they mentioned a mewtwo also, raising the number of gen1 cards

Ive never seen or heard about a mewtwo but the elekid I think has shown up on reddit before. I have a feeling of snubbul as well but Im not confident on that one. Its been some time since theyve show up and theyre almost always in random childhood binder galleries when they do.

When you look at the box I posted. It says you can buy two different sets of thirteen pokemon +the posters for them, so in theory there should be 26 total with Ho-oH and lugia being the legendary pulls probably. if you zoom its hard To see, but it looks like there is also the silhouette of a heracross and deerling also, the others i cant really make out very well.

I think the poster+sticker thing is another whole Beast, the stickers looks Square and have different border color (not only Red, Sorry I’m blind) than the other cards.

The silhouette are really a hard challenge for me ahah but I think it’s a stantler considering the time of the release

These recent updates are great. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find something like that reddit thread just so I can start trying to find these Gen2 promos by individual 'Mons rather than as set name.

I am not surprised @ad911 you’ve had as much trouble finding info off dealers. I created my E4 account because of this thread and its’ “mystery promos” I found in my long-lost collection. I consider myself someone who is pretty good at these type of things, and when only this thread came up, it definitely sparked some intrigue in me.

On to the sub-topic of the ‘hits’ likely being Lugia and Ho-oh. While I can’t speak for that, since once again, I not been able to find any Gen 2 for sale in '24 since I came back. What I can say is that Gen 1 does not have the same frequency across all of it’s 'Mons, but it seems relatively simple.

There’s about a 20:1 frequency between Meowth (the most common) and Dragonite (least by far). However, it’s hard to tell if Meowth is over-represented in auctions due to being the least popular. One thing is for sure, Dragonite appears far less than the rest. Outside of those two outliers, the rest seem to be about equally desirable and printed.

I’ve yet to see any Gen 1 not pictured in this thread show up in auctions or sales. If there are anymore that exist (as speculated Mewtwo) then I can imagine that they were printed less than others in the set, and are likely rarer than the Dragonite.

I’ve never seen a Mewtwo in this collection and I collect non-tcg mewtwo flats exclusively. Of course that doesnt guarantee it doesnt exist, but i would be very surprised. Any one has anything that might hint a mewtwo existing?

Sadly, nothing more than a comment saying that maybe he’s seen one.

As for the stickers I’d like to make a fun game ruining my eyesight even more.
I zoomed the picture and a friend of mine scalated it. It looks like shit and I love it.

Here it start the guessing game!
I counted 12 pokemon. There should be 26. I don’t even know what I circled

Here’s my guess:

  1. Heracross
  2. Stantler
  3. Donphan
  4. Spinarak
  5. Sneasel
  6. Noctowl
  7. Natu
  8. Shuckle
  9. Mantine
  10. Totodile
  11. Snubbull
  12. Octillery

Let’s see if you see something else/more :joy:

5 looks like hoothoot, 11 looks like wooper, chikorita looks like bb8, and ho-oh looks demonic.

Remember these were early 2000 promotions so expect Pokemon 2000 movie tie-ins and early gen2 pokemon

Here is that hoot-hoot, its another gold and silver boarder withouts a number, same as ho-oh and lugia.

I bought this from an auction just because I had never seen it and love promos. Just thought you’d all like to see how this one was labeled…Pokemon Rolls Promo but also says Nintendo. Not sure why it wasn’t graded and just given an “authentic” designation. It’s almost pristine except for a small crease on the bottom. I’m stoked to have it regardless.

Very cool. You just unlocked another piece of the mystery, since we had no idea SGC was grading these. I wonder when this was graded, or how long SGC has been grading them.

Side note to all - Does that mean that PSA will grade them as well given the recent buyout?

So, because of that, naturally I looked up the SGC pop reports and found a couple of interesting things:

Gen1 Pop report on SGC

20 graded cards total (including Bulbasaur above), only 2 have grades, rest are authentic. I’m an inexperienced grader, and am not sure if they opted for ‘authentic’ vs. numerical grade, but would find it odd that 18/20 selected that option, unless it was from one source. I wonder what factor the 2/20 cards had for them to be graded.

But here’s the gem for our humble narrator @omic - Unlike CGC, SGC has recieved two cards from Gen2. Here’s the report. Ledyba does in fact exist in Gen2, and two have been graded.

I don’t know about Grading databasses, what should I do to see the picture of the bug boy?
Let me add it in, please

It’s my understanding that modern PSA is the only service that attaches scans. I could not find it myself either.

Just stubbled upon this paid a hefty price to have a Lugia piece not many have.
Does anyone know if its gradeable yet?

Sounds like SGC and CGC grade them but unsure about PSA. Is hefty price double or triple digits?

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Seller had no room for era saying how rare the card is.
I couldn’t let it pass because I’ve never seen it before.
Ive been googling for 8 hours till I stumbled upon this forum.
As far as I know Lugia was one of the hardest chasers in this set. According to the shop owner who has sold multiple of these cards but this Lugia being the only one seen in his life
Thanks for letting me in!
Also I do not regret buying it for that price lol

Its a rough price to pay but its also really hard to get info on it so if you are happy getting it then its worth it.

Congrats, super cool purchase, and I’m personally very jealous regardless of the price.

This is definitely the highest recorded sale of this promo. As both as collector and investor, I do appreciate your risk. You and the seller are correct, Gen 2 in general are very hard to find, and it’s very likely it comes out later that Lugia and Ho-oh may have been a little extra rare, like the Dragonite in Gen 1.

Yes, the sticker price is high, but I think sometime in future, maybe distant, this set of promos will see its’ day in terms of monetary value.

We still don’t know a lot of about these, in ways. We have no idea why Nintendo themselves printed these in '98, and why Gen 2 clearly had much lower print run.

I wish we had an insider at the time or forensic card guru, because I have some speculations that I can’t verify or debunk. The way the card feels is nothing like Topps or any other sports card manufacturer was making, and it does not feel glossy like Japanese of the era, but is ever so slightly larger than regulation TCG card. It does feel like a MTG/Pokemon. I guess my speculation is that WotC may have printed these with Nintendo branding and disclaimer before/while they printed OG base set. The size, feel, and disclaimer style seems like WotC, and I don’t know card printing logistics, but seems odd for Nintendo to create printing press in US instead of ‘white label’/3rd party solution for what has to be a small print run, given how little is left.

Posting because I’m curious if anyone finds more of the Gen 1 cards and figured I’d share my “pull rates”. I found 19 total cards in my collection which were all from the original food boxes from Gen 1 with the 9 different ones posted in the original. Only 1 Jigglypuff, 4 Eevees and 2 of the other 7 and which does make me lean towards the 9 were all there was, unless they had a rare chase card.
