(I know there are a few active threads in the Side Collections board but thought I’d start a new thread specifically for Non-Pokemon TCG’s to hopefully get the conversation flowing a bit)
I have been looking to sink my teeth into something new and keen to hear about the obscure card sets that some of you collect!
I’m considering picking up the Hunter X Hunter: Greed Island Bandai card set, sold as a complete set. For those who aren’t familiar with Hunter X Hunter; Super Eyepatch Wolf did a phenomenal video on why you should watch it, but its essentially an adventure orientated anime with some incredible characterisation & world building, the card game is featured in one of the shows arcs and has huge significance for the fans, so this is definitely something really cool, here is a little example:
Beyond that, I’m quite interested in the One Piece TCG; the creator Eiichiro Oda is incredible, he has worked tirelessly for decades and his style is so distinct, plus the cards are incredibly colourful.
In addition, I recently discovered that Topps did a couple of seasons of X-Files trading cards which I think is totally absurd and amazing, so I am keen to pick some of those up since they’re not expensive at all:
Really looking forward to hearing about the most obscure TCG sets that you all collect, my respect goes to whoever brings forward the most niche TCG!
I could blow your mind with all my tcg sets. It wouldn’t be far from the truth if I stated I have every tcg set completed that has been released since the 1970s. Everything from Gilligan’s island to Lady Death and beyond. I have over 30 boxes stuffed with binder sets and numerous sets in acrylic boxes then cased up. Plus, I opened nearly all myself from boxes so they are amazingly mint.
Here’s one box I had handy to give you an idea of how I store them.
So I had no idea that someone actually made the Greed Island cards from Hunter X Hunter! You do realize that I have to buy those now right? Curious to follow this thread to see what else comes of it.
A tcg that I do not currently collect, but wish I did, is the Kingdom Hearts tcg that is no longer in print. I had some of the cards when they were released, but unfortunately they are lost to the sands of time now.
Woah @garyis2000 that’s an incredible accomplishment, genuinely impressed, really reaffirming to see so many TCG’s being preserved in such a manner. I’m moderately familiar with the Lady Death comic, love the medieval fantasy artwork, checked out some of the cards on Youtube and they’re actually quite striking. If you have anything particularly stand-out, beautiful or outright bizarre in that monolithic collection I’d be really keen to see!
Yeah @tentelisano I haven’t known for very long myself and they haven’t been around for long either, they seem to come in a presentation box along with a poster, neither of which are particularly nice looking but the cards themselves look sweet, just thinking about what they represent in the context of this really mechanically complex story structure as well has me all giddy, Togashi is a crazy genius and honestly reminds me of George R R Martin as far as really complex and convoluted character relationships go too!
I know a few people on here collect the Harry Potter TCG, would love to see some of the really weird cards in those sets if anyone is willing to share!
Some of the older Topps ones seem to be a lot of stills from the show, special effects have aged like milk and are a total remnant.
I think another company maybe took over later (?) and there are a lot of cards from that point on which have really abstract and quite frightening artwork which really encapsulates the show in a much better way, at least IMO.
There’s some crazy stuff in these pictures, to reiterate what I said in my last reply, monolithic really sums this up.
Just so many sets that make me think: “what were they thinking?” Just entirely random, like what @milhouse posted it really begs the question of who these were supposed to be marketed towards?
I wonder if the Simpsons set(s?) in that box are the same as those featured in this article? Huge fan of the show (pre-zombiefication) and I really dig the classic cultural aesthetic the show embodied at its peak in the 90’s, might be something I look into further.
Quite a lot of Super Hero-centric stuff there too, shame they all fell off when competitive card games became King, such a good opportunity to show off iconic artwork, scenes and quality cover art, surprised that at least with Marvel and DC being as successful as they currently are we don’t see more stuff like this? Maybe we do? I dunno, might be drowning somewhere in merchandise purgatory, I’m not really into the genre so not super informed!
My cousins were 8 and 10 years older than me, and I remember going to their house in the 90s as a kid and being engrossed (pun intended) in these cards. Theirs were stickers, and they had them stuck all over the outside of their bedroom doors along with other bumper stickers and random stuff. Now whenever I see these, I’m always taken back to that time. I’d love to see a full set of these in person and relive those memories.
