Didn’t realize it was an evolution of Scyther! Looks pretty interesting… I have to agree that I think there’s a little much going on around the top half, but overall, not bad
This got me thinking… the game’s website shows an image of Rapidash, Snorlax, Tangrowth, Drifblim and Onix in the Pasture area. All are fully evolved except Onix. Onix evolves with the steel coat through trade just like Scyther, but “trading” in the way that causes them to evolve hasn’t canonically been invented yet. This is why Scyther got a new evo…so maybe Onix will get a new evo too? That would be cool. I also think the starters will be getting regional forms, but that’s a safe bet.
My favorite part of each Pokemon game is the new Pokemon it brings to the series, and I am a really huge fan of both regional forms and new evolutions. This game has both and I’m looking forward to these Pokemon coming to the TCG!
Looking forward to the stats. We technically could be looking at a higher base stat total than Scizor, but I doubt it. Probably still 500, which means that either this thing is going to be 1) totally useless, 2) near identical Scizor or 3) have some really unique stat spread or god tier ability.
They could leech of the sp atk stat like they did with Mega Beedrill.
My guess is it will be a Bug/Rock type with insane defense. Maybe they flip Scizor’s Attack and Defense stats? Scizor’s Base Attack is 130 and its Base Defense is 100. I could see Kleavor having that reversed.
EDIT: Then again, Scyther’s Base Attack is 110, so I doubt Kleavor’s will be lower than Scyther’s. Maybe something like Base Attack of 110 and Base Defense of 140 and they just take away 10 points of its speed?
I think, given the axe theme, they’re going the aggressive route. Which probably means: higher attack (or power boosting ability of some kind, tough claws sounds highly possible) and lower speed. Automatically tiers below Scizor: Stealth rock weak, no bullet punch to make up for speed, no toxic immunity, much worse weakness and resistance setup, which is another speed issue etc etc. The speed alone is bad enough, just look at Mega Garchomp. Could still be good, but I doubt it. But they did introduce accelrock last gen, so maybe we’re going to see something cool happening with that and a continued technician.
But I read the dex entry of this thing. Aside from alluding to a real high attack stat (and defense stat), the wild factor here could lie in one particular ability: weak armor. We might be looking at a physical Volcarona here, a nuke that need truckloads of support to clean teams.
Another thing that leads me to believe it won’t be all that competitively viable: it is supposed to be an “outdated” Pokemon, because this time period took place before Scizor even existed. We see how most Fossil Pokemon are almost always crap competitively. Outside of a few exceptions (Dracovish, Dracozolt and Aerodactyl in earlier gens), Fossil Pokemon typically aren’t very good because they are supposed to be obsolete. I could see the same thing happening here with Kleavor.
