My personal MtG x Pokemon crossover - got some Magic the Gathering artists to draw Pokemon versions of their cards!

Even if the ash is a bit different than what we’ve used to i like the art a lot, especially when it’s shared between two cards! Also, was the beedrill the first mega you have gotten and did you request a regular one and they turned it into mega by themselves or was it intentionally mega?

Yes, Beedrill was the first mega. That was actually a request from me, I just prefer Beedrill’s mega form to its normal one by a lot lol. I still haven’t decided on a set procedure of what to do regarding megas, regional forms etc. I tend to just go with whatever works well with the card art I’m looking at.

Also as a bit of trivia, sometimes there’s not many cards that can represent an idea (for instance there’s very few MTG cards representing kangaroos, like maybe 2-3). So I have to get creative to fit it in. Maybe I will go for Mega Kangaskhan too.

These are so awesome, I love your creativity with the choices to relate MTG cards to Pokemon. I also really like how you use a combination of new and old cards.

The hard part for me would be deciding which side of the card to display!

Updating with a few cards that I got from IX Art Show, a large art show catering to mostly fantasy art in Reading PA. MTG’s art directors frequently visit this show to find potential new MTG artists!

Gray Merchant of Asphodel is a silent but deadly card that can sometimes take out multiple opponents simply by entering the battlefield. I decided that it would work well with Koffing. Scott Murphy creatively obliged by having the merchant carry Koffing instead of his usual bag! No wonder he’s so potent…

It was a good day for the Koffing evolution line as Weezing was also completed, once again by our friend Jarel Threat, who drew Arbok also. I realize that if I were going beyond the 151, Inkshield would probably be best suited for Inkay, but I remember how many times in the anime James escaped via a Weezing smokescreen, so I thought it wouldn’t be a bad comparison.

Chuck Grieb drew several animals for the recent Bloomburrow set, so here he is with Poliwhirl. Fun fact, I couldn’t pick this card up until the Saturday of the show, but it was on display in Chuck’s binder and several other people tried to buy it!

Lastly, this one was technically completed in Italy, but my Italian agent also attended IX and handed this card to me in person. It’s Ruin Krabby! I really like how Matteo totally changed the sinister tone of the original with a curious Krabby. He even changed the sky color to blue to lighten the mood.

I got several commissions ordered at IX that will take a few months to complete, so I’ll hope to update you with some more exciting proofs soon.

I wonder how long some of these individual arts take time to draw, some very cool and varying styles with these new ones, no surprise people tried to purchase that poliwhirl

When the binder is complete please do show it. You’re gonna have one of the most unique and coolest art pokemon collection ever made. This is one of the greatest threads ever on any forum. My god.

It depends! I think most of the wait is just in the queue for your turn, but some artists do also have an extensive process to draw the proof itself. If you join the FB MTG artist proofs group, sometimes artists post time lapses of their processes. It’s really cool to see the level of detail that goes into a tiny painting.

Love the Koffing and especially Weezing.

Got to see the binder IRL at RC DC. Pretty nutty

Good seeing you there also. Did you end up getting any alters from Tedin? I’ll have to find him again next year, got one of his MB2 Urza proofs.

Just found this thread and WOW! This is amazing! I don’t know much about MtG, but I love the different art styles used to draw Pokémon with interpretations that isn’t typical for that Pokémon. Kudos to your creative mind that made it possible for these commission pieces to exist!

I love how you explain the MtG card and how it ties into the Pokémon you picked for commission. My favorite ones so far are the glass stain artwork of Charmeleon and Venusaur and the moxes of the cover art Pokémon. I also love how Evyn’s signature changes depending on what Pokémon she drew!

This card reminds me of the expensive Moonbreon card that’s taken the community by the storm lol.

This one really reminded me of the Kingdra EX Black Star Promo from Shrouded Fable.

I can’t wait to read your next update! One of my favorite collection threads here, it’s very unique! Hope to see the binder set when it’s completed  Thank you for sharing!

Cheers!

Kind of an intermission mini update while awaiting a few big orders from cons and end of year.

This is my first artist proof painting done on a token card! In MTG, token cards are used to represent creatures generated by other cards. MTG might be kind of unique in that it usually has art for each individual token, rather than making you use a generic marker. I got this one from Gina Matarazzo at IX. I like her detail on the flowers!

Stonybrook Banneret used to be an often used creature in Merfolk decks. Ralph Horsley (who also drew Magneton) only has a few copies left, as its an old card.

This one was a surprise even to me, as it was gifted to me. There’s an MTG artist proof discord, and they have a yearly secret santa event, where you have to commission an artist proof for another user in the group, based on a description of your preferences. I still don’t know who ordered this for me , but they really knew what I liked! Sandshrew blended perfectly into this drawing. Maybe it learned Grass Knot along the way.

Below, we actually break from the 151 for a little while. Masticore is the first AP I have acquired of a a card on WotC’s reserve list. (This means Masticore can’t be reprinted.)

It used to be a seriously powerful card, being able to ping creatures and regenerate itself freely, all while fitting in any color deck due to being an artifact creature. It has since been powercrept out of the meta, but I decided to get an AP painting on it since Masticore is an important part of MTG’s history.

Maybe Solgaleo would’ve been a better fit, but I was in an Entei mood, haha.

Lastly, we have the Timeless Lotus. All the lotus cards in MTG are rather special. Even if none of them have been particularly relevant since black lotus (except maybe Jewelled and Petal), they are often sought after by AP collectors as a symbol of MTG itself.

Since this lotus particularly represents nature’s immunity to the ravages of time, I paired it with Celebi . Lindsey Look, the artist, didn’t know of Celebi before this assignment, but she found it very cute and drew it very well!

That Celebi art is absolutely gorgeous. Another awesome thread update. Can’t believe this is like an interim update. Eagerly waiting for the big update whenever it comes! Thanks again for sharing.

Cheers!

Here’s the first big update of the month.

Starting with B/W sketches, we have this one of Nidoqueen wearing Liliana Vess’s tiara. Liliana is a famous planeswalker in MTG, and she has the ability to animate the dead…somehow Poison seemed a good fit for her.

Jynx can cause disruptions with its alluring song and dance, so I asked our friend RK Post to draw it on Avatar of Discord. He also did Grimer and Bronzor if you recall!

I honestly am not sure what kind of animal Slowpoke and Slowbro are meant to represent, but they always looked Hippo-ish to me, so I asked Aaron Miller (who was having a sale on his APs) to draw on the back of Rampaging Hippo. Very team rocket vibes!

Jo Cameron, who did Vulpix and Ninetales, returns with this breezy interpretation of Rapidash and Ponyta!

Steve Argyle has drawn hundreds of MTG cards. He famously was the first artist to draw Liliana. Fist of Flame is also a well known combo card that works with Fervent Champion. I perhaps should’ve asked him to draw Liliana but he did a great job with Hitmonchan too!

If you’re not sure what this fused mass is, it’s a Jolteon! Igor Kieryluk is well known for his somewhat dark art style, as evidenced by cards like Elesh Norn. Urabrask is one of the Phyrexian praetors. His signature ability is haste, so I wanted him paired next to Jolteon. However, Igor seems to have taken a different interpretation, and fused the two of them Pokemon Fusion Generator style! It’s a bit FMA, but I like the end result!

To round things off, we have Psyduck and Moltres from Drew Tucker! Moltres is on the back of a Plateau, an expensive dual land from Magic’s earliest set. It’s a callback to Indigo Plateau, where Moltres was found in Pokemon Red/Blue. As for Psyduck, the card was supposed to originally feature Kadabra torturing the man in Glimpse the Unthinkable, but Drew liked Psyduck a lot, so I let him draw it. The end result turned out really well.

I’ll be traveling to Japan in the last 2 weeks of the year, so not sure yet if I’ll get to post another update. There’s still more to come!

The psyduck and moltres ones are absolutely phenomenal, even though kadabra in that theme us also a great idea i have to say psyduck is the perfect pick for that card, especially when executed that well. Ponyta/rapidash one is also an excellent one and i’m very fond of jynx too since the style reminds me of the grimer he made, still waiting for the day i’ll see muk here

Thanks for another brilliant update. I agree with @joponnes, the Psyduck is phenomenal. I really also enjoyed the Rapidash and Ponyta card, they look glorious. Also, I really appreciate the thought process behind the artists version of the Pokemon. It is so fascinating to read. Really enjoyed this update. Wish you a pleasant and safe trip to Japan.

Cheers!

I should probably be packing for my flight tomorrow, but I’ll write one more update for the year. Here’s 5 cards that came in recently:

There’s quite a few in the 151 that can slice and dice, but I decided to pick the plucky hero of TCG Pocket, Farfetch’d! I like Jeremy Wilson’s carefree style.

Teferi is one of MTG’s famous planeswalkers. He often saves the A-team at clutch moments by stopping time. His Time Raveller card is also famous for the oppressive environment it creates for an opponent’s spells. I paired him with Slowpoke and the result is really funny. It’s like Teferi tried to use time magic on Slowpoke but it’s already so slow it’s unaffected.

This is the first of two Alola cards in this update! They’re not required for the 151, but I took a monetary detour with Cabal Coffers, an often used card in black, for its ability to massively ramp up mana production. The art shows a sinister looking vault filled with treasure, so I paired it with Alolan Meowth.

Rishadan Port used to be an important card for controlling the tempo of opponents’ lands. The port itself is known for pirates and ruffians. The central building reminded me of an Exeggcutor, and I imagine it might be tropical. Jerry went further on the idea by having Exeggcutor smash the building, lol.

Fblthp is actually a quite beloved character in the MTG artist proof community, and there are some collectors who only collect cards with him. He has spawned many derivative cards since his first appearance in Totally Lost. I decided to pair him with a Pokemon his own size who also has only one eye. I love how David Palumbo made Fblthp buff, like he’s using a pullup bar. The metallic effect on Magnemite is also well done for a tiny card.

That will be it for me for now. I wish you all happy holidays, and I hope you get the cards you want for Christmas! I’m looking forward to showing you all the complete 151 binder next year!

I really liked the careless farfetch’d, clueless slowpoke and polished magnemite, but i also immediately fell in love with Fblthp
