Logan “double up” Paul

ah, you’re doubling down on this insane argument. zorloth responded more succinctly than i would have

Sure thing mate

Personally I’d prefer Selena Gomez to have bought the box.

If @jcincy101 had said that Hitler was good at “propaganda” would that have been an acceptable comment to you? Because the concept is closely related to marketing (just a variation of it that uses falsehoods in order to motivate people to support a particular cause).

In any case, this conversation is another fine example of Godwin’s law.

I mean the main villain in most super hero movies is an “evil genius” so maybe I shouldn’t have gone all “Hitler” and done that example ha.

Yes, propaganda would’ve been acceptable to me. But what Hitler did wasn’t a form of marketing. Marketing involves the promotion of some benign idea or product. Propaganda, on the other hand, is malicious and involves subversion and misinformation. There’s no way to ‘market’ the mass murder of Jews – but there is a way to sensitize people to the idea through propaganda (i.e., misattributing society’s woes to the Jewish people). That’s not ‘marketing’ – the notion that Hitler was engaged in anything akin to ‘marketing’ is totally ahistorical.

Yeah that’s all fine, I’m just drawing attention to the fact that we’re arguing about semantics here.

Yeah; what else would we be arguing about? Logan Paul was assigned an adjective and I am disputing the suitability of it. That’s semantics, but doesn’t mean it’s not important or relevant. People in this thread are trying to argue that Logan Paul is a genius at marketing and, to put it politely, it’s an imprecise description of what he’s good at (if he’s good at anything). Logan Paul is popular, and people pay attention when popular people do something. It’s literally as simple as that.

There are ways to explain the Logan Paul controversy here that don’t involve calling Logan Paul and Hitler marketing geniuses.

yes, thank you for saying this. now that i reflect on it more, i don’t necessarily disagree with the claim that logan paul is good at “marketing” his own personal brand (via attention-grabbing stunts, and now essentially anything he says or does due to his massive following), although heavily disagree with calling him a genius. but very, very much disagree with the claim that Hitler was good at marketing for all the reasons @zorloth has mentioned. either way, no need to derail this thread further

side note @EnlightenedBulbasaur , really enjoyed your conversation with Jake on his channel!

I had no idea who this guy was until everyone made a big deal about him buying base set at record prices.

I watched a few of his videos because you guys made him sound like a movie star. And his prank videos are something I’d never be into.

At this rate you guys are going to make him famous for buying Base Set. Regardless it doesn’t bother me what this guy gets or does. It doesn’t matter whether we like him or not he still has the right to buy cards like anyone else.

I agree with this. I buy from wowlootsellers who has a bad rep in this community and his eBay feedback is horrendous but he has some hard to find stuff usually at competitive prices. His packaging for sealed stuff sucks but I’ve been fortunate so far. He will also cancel your purchases if they go for too low or he has a high uptick on a certain product which means it was hyped up somewhere and he will relist for higher prices.By buying from him I will continue to support his negative behavior but at the end of the day he is a source for miscellaneous rare stuff.
There’s also the gambling side of Pokemon which I despise but other people generally enjoy opening up mystery boxes or entering Instagram raffles, so I’m not going to stop them. They already know it’s cheaper to buy singles over the long run.

I still disagree with the claim that Logan Paul is good at ‘marketing,’ but it’s honestly not a worthwhile thing to argue about . I’ll also say that the topic of this thread is equally not worthwhile. Everyone agrees that Logan Paul will bring a certain amount of publicity to Pokemon cards. The disagreement is over whether or not that publicity is positive or negative. And anyone stating anything about that is speculating – no one knows how Logan will portray his involvement in Pokemon. If he does something stupid like destroy the box, then that could be negative publicity. But if he opened the box out of genuine enthusiasm for the cards, then that could be positive publicity. But no one knows exactly what he’s going to do with the box.

And @hyruleguardian: I also very much enjoyed that discussion and I hope you guys continue it!

I think he should open the box, but that he plays flip it or rip it with every pack…

Do you really believe Logan Paul brought that much awareness to suicide prevention. Honestly, you sound so ignorant believing his video brought that much attention to the issue when suicide prevention has been a mainstream issue in America for a long time. Logan Paul used the issue of suicide prevention in order to try and salvage his name not to actually help.

if i made bad experiences with people before, i avoid them. if they are rude or make dumb comments, i put them on the blacklist, too. i don’t see why i should sell beautiful and rare cards to pricks. i usually talk to people before i sell, if i don’t know them already.

Funny but for accuracy’s sake…it has nothing to do with business:)

In my 66 years have I made any mistakes? Sure. Do I want to be judged by them or have them define me for the rest of my life? No. In High school I did some things that would have made Logan disgusted. Some of the haters on this thread would have wanted to crucify me👀Good thing there wasn’t social media back then lol.

Four lessons:

  1. Live and let live (it’s a 60s thing;)
  2. Things aren’t always the way they appear.
  3. Redemption often begins with forgiveness. In fact, it often begins because of forgiveness.
  4. If you want to succeed and/or effect change, judge only yourself.

Logan Paul made mistakes and caused some harm but he has also done much good “anonymously” which you would need to also know in order to fairly judge.
