Let's talk about it... bubble burst or seasonal lul?

I believe people are holding off because of the holiday spendings and snail the pace shipping.

Thanks for the imput

I think it’s from the holidays and a lot of people trying to cash out. Wait until the tax refunds roll in.

I heard that from someone else too! In Canada our tax refunds are maybe a grand or two. Depending on what tax bracket you are in. Obviously lower income recieves more. They must get a decent chunk in the US.

Not only is one sale not a good indicator of the market, but it just so happens that one sale ended on a Saturday night two days before Christmas. I can’t think of a worse time to end a listing.

There are any number of reasons for fluctuations. It could be a problem of being right at Christmas, too late to buy a Christmas present and too early to spend Christmas cash. This is a problem with almost every collectible item sold on Ebay.

But at least the fluctuations aren’t as bad as crypto-currencies. Actually, the recent drop in the price of the cryptos might be part of the current lull. I’ve known many Magic players / collectors who also speculate in cryptos. When prices of the cryptos are high they will try to buy cards with cryptos, and when the prices of cryptos are lower they will try to sell cards for cryptos. It gives them a totally different asset class to run to. Maybe some of these types also deal in graded Pokemon as a temporary store of wealth.

Or it might be a lull as everyone tries to get into the crypto speculation. Apparently lots of college kids are trying their luck. If your current passion is cryptos it might push Pokemon to the side for a bit.

If the lower price wasn’t a one-of you’ll know it by mid-January. Until you have a decent time period to determine a trend, anything weird is just an aberration.

Why would lower income receive more money back in Canada?
In the states you get back whatever you overpay.

We have different tax brackets and the higher income are taxed more and receive less back at tax time!!! Take from the rich and give to the poor!!! Plus it’s only gonna get worse under our amazing prime minister!!! (No sarcasm at all!)

The crypto currency drop might make sense. I think a lot of people who collect or flip were supplementing their income with crypto to afford buying cards.

I don’t mind taxes as long as they are spent correctly with accountability.

Wasn’t Pokémon in a giant bubble that burst around 2001? (And couldn’t it be in an analogous bubble now, marked by its meteoric rise within a short period?)

Lol…good luck.

We have multiple brackets too.
I guess my question is…if you get a tax refund, doesn’t it consist of the money you overpaid?

Correct. I’m no tax expert I just know that most people don’t wouldn’t get enough back to dump into a hobby. It’s not a lot. I also know that being in a higher income bracket that I don’t get anything back and after all of my quarterly tax payments I still owe money when they time comes around!!

Generally its a GST/HST credit to offset sale taxes effect on low income earners.

The 2001 bubble was real, and happened as the dot.com stock bubble burst. Young kids still wanted to play the game and collect the cards, but parents had less money to overpay for sealed product. Then 9/11 hit and all sorts of priorities changed in the adult world. I think the current popularity of pokemon is tied to the kids who were players, or were collectors when condition and series weren’t important. Now they are able to collect, and also lock in value with slabbed cards.

if you are looking at Psa 8 1st ed cards we are back now to how they were at the end of September, around 2500 before sept they were around 1500-2000 then we hit a peak in 3000-4000 all in nov - dec now they are under 3k

Yeah that’s all there is to it really. It’s just certain people(not referring to the OP) thought all these cards were headed straight to the moon pricewise like there was nothing stopping them. I was hearing talks of 9s going for $10k short term and they’re already back down in the $5000 range.

Everything is up overall in the past quarter and past year as well.

Relax people. The hobby is safe. Just have realistic expectations, but most important buy what you like regardless of outcome/ROI.

I’ve said it before, but whatever I collect I’d be more than happy even if I end up breaking even down the road, which is very unlikely… but I’m trying to be conservative in what I’m buying and what I think it will be worth. Don’t go in expecting everything will double every year for the next 50 years.

Haha are you actually complaining that you’re getting taxed more because you are a higher income earner? You should feel fortunate that life has put you in a position where you are able to earn a decent wage and not whinge that a portion of your money is being used to help the people and the country that you live in.

As well as your taxes supporting things like health care (it’s publicly funded in Canada right?), infrastructure, education, and so on, it helps the people who need this support. There are people that are struggling to support their families, can’t afford medical bills and medicine, and simply won’t have the same opportunities in life as other people with more money. I’m from Australia but I’ve taught in London for a couple of years too and I can tell you I see the same problems. I worked in a lower socio economic area in London where all school lunches and breakfasts are paid for by the council/government. Pretty much every every child was living in government housing and there would often be multiple families living in the same flats. Without this support from the government what are these people supposed to do? In the school I teach at now, there are many families who need government support to help them live.

I was brought up in a single parent household where my mum relied on financial support to help us live. With this support my mum still had to work full time but was still able to complete a masters and then a phD in behavioural sciences. Her thesis was published into a book and she has co written other books and journal articles, being an expert in her field. Thanks to the support of the government she was able to achieve this. Lucky the Prime Minister at the time didn’t support your elitist view and tax everyone the same. I feel very grateful that I was born in a country that supported us this way and I was able to go through university and have all of the opportunities I have now and be in a position to give back. If not I wonder where we would be now…

Maybe you should get off your ivory throne and be happy that your tax money is doing good instead of whinging about how you have to pay more taxes. Unfortunately your government and Prime Minister are trying to make things a bit more equitable… which you obviously don’t want. Screw the poor people right!? They should have to pay the same tax as you! Oh and while the tax returns of the lower income earners will be used for necessities such as food and clothes you might just have to wait a bit longer to buy your next Pokemon card.

Damn man. Thanks for taking the time to write that. I won’t take the time to respond in length as this is a place I go to talk about Pokemon. But I will say one thing. I’ve been working a construction job since I was 16 years old. At 20 I had my own company because I worked my ass off. The money and benefits I have now, are from working like a dog. Like I continue to do. I never had to fight for a meal, but there’s no silver spoon up my ass. Everything I have today is from good old fashioned hard work! I’m sorry your life wasn’t a fantasy land, but please, don’t take your shit out on me. Especially not on efour. There’s other places for this kind of garbage lol.
