Leonhart taking a break from YouTube or at least slowing down

The day Scott makes an open mouth thumbnail is the day I quit the hobby

Firstly, you sort of misquoted me at the beginning there, but I agree entirely with this section.

My qualm isn’t with you, nor papafrankgod or whomever decides to speak their opinion on what a YouTuber decides to do with their content. My point is that E4 is a collecting forum, and while discussion is free and open to all opinions, my opinion is that not only is complaining about a YouTuber pointless, it clogs up threads with negativity which might just be better suited for the YouTube comments if you feel so strongly. I think you mistake me speaking out against blatant hatred and vitriol at a YouTuber (who will never even read any of this) as defending Leonhart, which I’m not. He is simply the same to me as every other content creator whose videos I consume; a fictional being I will likely never meet and really do not care much about. Using the Logan Paul debacle is an excellent example you pulled up. I can’t say I love the guy or hate the guy personally, but this wasn’t and isn’t the place to insert personal opinions on someone’s character. Not because those opinions aren’t valid and not because these public figures don’t put themselves in a position to be criticized, but rather we all have better things to do and read than whatever all of this is.

Slightly unrelated, but I think over the past 6-8 months on E4 there has been a significant shift from nonstop opinionated discussion and bickering to more research-based, informative threads, news updates, and articles. That’s not to say they didn’t exist before, but it seems the trend is moving in that direction and I hope it continues that way. (And might I add, E4 has been an overwhelmingly positive environment compared to the start of the pandemic)

And thank you @pfm always editing my emoticon typos as I walk away from my screen for two hours :pray:t3:

I agree with all of you that hating on a Youtuber for over the top thumbnails and reactions is pointless. But this Rare Candy thing is no bueno… The mystery boxes they released were so incredibly bad. Leonhart opened 3 of them in a video (which is now removed/privated I believe) where he got like $50 worth of stuff out of each (they cost $250). They contained a PSA 9 baby shiny Charmeleon from HF, a PSA 10 base unlimited Rattata, and a PSA 10 base 2 Magikarp. Those things are a straight up scam. I can’t believe he even uploaded that video in the first place, it just made him and Rare Candy look terrible…

That’s disappointing to hear. I actually did a couple consults with them, and was very negative about mystery boxes. Maybe the most negative and critical I’ve ever been on a call. They just see the money and don’t understand or care how it’s going to draw in the wrong crowd and reputation.

No actually high end marketplace is known for mystery boxes. Especially ones with base unlimited rattatas.

Spicy take on a forum dedicated to collectors of a childrens IP, whos specific collections revolve around a game geared towards kids.

He’s gonna do what’s right for him. I can’t imagine the effort it takes. Also, it must be tough to be an Internet personality with kids.

He’s probably got it made anyway from his channel. He’s earned it.

Yeah that’s not good. It’s clearly a way to dump low tier inventory at an inorganic higher price.

There’s still a difference between Pokemon TCG content aimed at kids and Pokemon TCG content aimed at adults. Scott’s channel is a good example of Pokemon TCG content aimed more at adults. In contrast, I’d say that Leonhart’s content is pretty clearly made to be consumed by kids.

The optics are absolutely terrible. They seem to brand themselves as if they are competitors to other serious auction houses like Goldin, Heritage, PWCC. Just look at their description on their website

Making the rarest cards and collections available to everyone. Verified products, exclusive drops, and the best collector community in the world.

but it looks like their best-selling product is a mystery box. If I was them I would be pivoting hard. Either embrace the audience they have and stop trying to be some elite auction house or immediately drop this mystery box garbage

I’ll never forget when I started doing videos, a kid commented and was like, ā€œall you do is talk talk talkā€.

Maybe I’m just really out of touch with the times (quite possible), but it was definitely not initially clear to me that Leonhart has a target audience of children.

At first I honestly just thought he was a bit goofy and eccentric with his mannerisms and style. Kind of like Rudy, but more family friendly and without the market chat.

When I was a kid there was no such thing as YouTube or social media. I spend no time around any kids whatsoever (I have none of my own, and I was an only child). So I have to constantly remind myself that the way kids interact with the hobby today is quite different from what my own experiences were like 20 years ago.

Sure, I already knew that today’s kids use technology and social media at a young age. Of course I knew that some would watch YouTube videos too. I just don’t think I comprehended the scale — that quite possibly a million kids are subscribed to Leonhart.

At first I honestly assumed it was a million+ adults that just enjoy a more lighthearted and less serious form of entertainment in the hobby.

At some point I realized that he really is targeting kids, and I felt like I missed the memo. :joy:

Na . Thats your opinion.
Its aimed at fam friendly but nowhere in his own self description or promotion does it mention anything like that…

Here is from the horse’s mouth.

His main page has a vid about opening 1st ed packs (pinned) not the core audience for kids…

And he elicits subs… most kids channels make the goal ad revenue…

All this is contrary to you claim at his target audience.

My personal opinion is that he wants mass appeal more than anything, which is fine.
I have nothing against him personally and believe he is net positive for pokemon in general…

Pop up store was killer idea, and awesome in principle, but didnt like the prepackaged display/vid of it ( feels like it was set up by a large conglomerate board of directors, not a solo fan/collector).

And have enjoyed much of his content (typically volume turned wayy down…)

But cringe is cringe… thumbnails need to go, id be in for more in depth vids or long form discussion… but that dont sell Leonhart merch…

All in for the guy chasing a bag, but dont tell me its ā€œfor the kidsā€ / not for the bag.

Opening a $10k pack is for ADULTS, not kids. His audience is PokƩmon fans of all ages.
