Top 10 Vintage Poketubers of 2020. Agree with the list?

***Not my video.***

Heavily opinionated yes.

Top10Pokemon shared his Top 10 vintage poketubers of 2020.

Pretty accurate? Thoughts? Does anyone care?

Seems like a solid list to me, though I think the ordering depends on the type of content a specific audience is looking for.

Personally I only watch TCA, smpratte and Z&G on a regular basis. The rest is usually too ā€˜hyped’ for me. Luckily the hype channels can easily be distinguished by their :open_mouth: thumbnails (Seriously though, why are these dumb faces still a thing?).

Honorable mention goes out to @sacari. Haven’t seen a whole lot of you, but what I’ve seen was way above average poketuber quality IMO. Keep it up!

Strong agree with everything @muk said, though I’ll add Graded Gem UK. They do some fun/chill openings, and the discussions are really good. I’ve also started watching (listening) to Pokemonradar, who has a great podcast series; a lot of E4 members have been guests.

Also, @gemmintpokemon was a big part of me coming back to the hobby.

I do find that most of the ā€˜hype’ channels’ videos are enjoyable, and much less over the top than the thumbnails/titles would have you believe, but I’d be lying if I said they didn’t deter me.

I will say too, I love that PokeRev was able to find so much success in the YouTube sphere. He has been a legit collector and seller long before Pokemon collecting really started becoming mainstream. I feel like he could have easily just imitated other pack-opening channels, but he took an innovative approach to box openings and has a good mix of content for veteran collectors and younger audiences. Hats off!

I’m glad I’m not the only one that can’t stand it. I want to put a hot dog or a donut in their mouth everytime they leave it gaping open. That’s the youtube algorithm thing.

I really enjoy ZandG, smpratte, TCA. Personally, the cards don’t need the reactions for me to enjoy them. I feel like the channels above highlight the cards best. The people are secondary to the cards, the story, the history and the odd facts.

Obviously the video is ordered by the content creator, for anybody who doesn’t feel like watching this was the list:

  1. UnlistedLeaf
  2. GradedGem
  3. SMPratte
  4. Randolph PokƩmon
  5. ZandGEmporium
  6. Rhymstyle
  7. Lootbox TV
  8. TCA Gaming
  9. Leonhart
  10. Pokerev

My order would be:

  1. SMPratte because his knowledge in the hobby obviously. He lacks openings compared to say, Pokerev, though I believe the knowledge outweighs the lack of openings. I try to be productive with my time so it makes more sense for me to watch an educational video rather than an entertainment video.

  2. TCA Gaming. While I’m sure he has just as much knowledge as SMPratte, he doesn’t expose us to it like Scott does. But his surplus of vintage openings give him points here. He shows people the different Base Box variants for example, which I like. He also taught us why his 1st edition Base Box was fake, in addition to opening the packs inside. All around really comforting videos to watch too lol its hard to describe.

  3. Pokerev because when I’m absolutely out of it and don’t feel like being productive, his click-bait videos often entertain if you watch the right stuff. I like how he usually gets right to the point, but he loses a shit ton of points from me after he saw a Great Ball plush toy in a mystery box and failed to identify what kind of Pokeball it was.

And I don’t watch the rest but I spent long enough typing this out so I’m posting it anyways

Nothing against any of the others on the list, but the top 2 for me far and away are Z&G and SMPratte… The 2 poketubers that share the most knowledge/information. Even though I’m not a seller, I’ve also enjoyed Z&G’s spinoff channel Z&G’s flips, interesting info about the seller/flipper side of the hobby.

TCAGaming, smpratte, and Pokenomics are by far my favorites. TCAGaming in particular is an absolute gem of a channel. Zero hype, all info, and Rusty is just a very calming person to listen to lol.

Rhymstyle is #1 for me. The energy he brings always make his videos enjoyable, even if he doesn’t have knowledge to the extent of more veteran experts like SMPratte or TCA.

100% agree.

And I’m kind of all done with the hype model and formulaic ā€œcreativity.ā€ We don’t need anymore Hollywood models of generics or hive mentalities. I understand it’s about making money most of the time, but wow is it tiring.

And maybe it’s just me but Lootbox TV is so lame it’s in danger of becoming cool via ironic satire. And I can’t listen to main talky guy without hearing Seth Rogen. Freaks me out a little.

TCA and Gem Mint PokƩmon are the only two PokƩmon YouTube channels I watch on a very infrequent basis. I probably watch about 4 PokƩmon-related videos per year.

Your video itself is an example of the reason I don’t watch PokĆ©mon content on YouTube - you’ve turned a top 10 list which I could have skim-read in about 5 seconds into an 8 minute video. I’m sure it’s a great video, but I’m sorry to say I have neither the time nor patience to watch it myself.

I know this thread is mainly about the top 10 you’ve created, but of those I personally only watch TCA Gaming’s videos on a regular basis, and smpratte and Leonhart sometimes when I’m in the mood or the video title interest me.

Here an overview of my PokƩmon-related YT subscriptions right now, though:

Videos I almost always watch:

  • TCA Gaming: www.youtube.com/c/TheCharizardAuthority/videos Great pack openings, PSA returns, and very unique items every once in a while. In addition, he shares some great information in most of his videos, sometimes even including misprinted/error cards I was unaware of before. Great channel for both pack openings and information at the same time.
  • Gem Mint PokĆ©mon: www.youtube.com/channel/UC7zlHB2JcfTJXhP4ATX6tjg/videos Again, great pack openings and WotC era items in general. He uploads a bit less frequently, but his videos are of the same quality as TCA’s and have the same abundance of information in them.

Some other smaller PokƩmon YouTube channels I can recommend as well, which I watch pretty frequently:

  • Sacari: www.youtube.com/c/Sacari/videos I especially like the small ā€œPokĆ©mon Cards you’ve never heard of!ā€ series, even though I have heard of all four thus far. But I like it, because they’re short and the the point, while still giving all the relevant information. His other videos are great as well.
  • Rocket Oscar: www.youtube.com/channel/UCSzeG126ya9uj1Rm6jjOEfA/videos Just a simple 2-5 minute video where they open a single pack. Sometimes modern, sometimes vintage Japanese. I like that they show each card for about 1-2 seconds, instead of just skimming to the non-holos to the Holofoil/Ultra/Secret Rare. And they always highlight the top pull, even if it’s just a non-holo Rare, in a very nice HD close-up.
  • Hungry Kabigon: www.youtube.com/c/HungryKabigon/videos He only opens new Japanese products and mystery packs, and sometimes some other Japanese TCGs. I personally like to watch his videos while doing something else on the side (like browsing the threads on the forum  ).

Some other YouTube channels I’m subscribed to, but only watch every once in a while when I’m in the mood or when the video title interests me:

  • smpratte: www.youtube.com/c/smpratte/videos I don’t think he needs an introduction. Great YouTube channel with information and on-topic discussions of the current things going on, and the occasional rare Trophy card in the background. I’m personally less of a fan of seeing entire ~15 minute videos of just someone talking, whoever it is and whatever they say (sorry Scott), but I do watch some of the videos with topics that interest me.
  • Leonhart: www.youtube.com/c/Leonhart54/videos Yes, the thumbnails and reactions are both completely over the top, but at the same time he does have some interesting pack openings ranging across the entire English TCG, not just WotC or modern. I do usually skip the talking and go straight to the opening of the packs/boxes though.
  • David Persin - PokĆ©mon: www.youtube.com/c/DavidPersinPokemon/videos This guy owns the largest English PokĆ©mon TCG collection in the world, including many trophy cards and sealed products. Although he hasn’t shown too many of those trophy cards yet, he does have a very nice collection that he shows bit by bit. He’s pretty eccentric and usually his videos are weird, ngl. But the cards he does show are always pretty cool to see. I’m sure any English Master Collectors would enjoy seeing his cards.
  • PokĆ©mon Classics: www.youtube.com/channel/UC5OnWXD44FjvIM0D2Q6-j3g/videos He barely uploads, but his videos are pretty informative. He primarily focuses on the WotC era as well.

Lootbox is interesting. I’d say they are easily the channel that has lost the most money from bad openings (basketball, PokĆ©mon, etc) but they also might have infinity money? I do wish they had a bit more knowledge of stuff they were opening in any case, PokĆ©mon included.

also, where is maxmoefoe :eyes::eyes:

@quuador I appreciate the mention! I run a pair of non-Pokemon YouTube channels that are moderately successful and take-up most of my free time (outside my real job), but I’m planning on uploading more consistently now that I’m working from home.

Wonderfull channel, maxmoefoe is the only pack opening channel I watch. For the rest I think smpratte and sacari are pretty good. I also watch gradedgem , but that is mainly because I grade my cards with them. Most other channels are not for me (too much hyp or too much pack openings), but sometimes I get recommended some channels, that is how I found out about sacari. I would say those 4 belong in the top 10, but I could not say anything about the others.

Fun fact, @gemmintpokemon was my inspiration to start collecting 1st Edition PSA 10 Holo sets back in the day. In fact, we worked a few trades to help each other finish some sets. I think my favorite thing about Zack’s videos was his child-like enthusiasm when seeing his PSA returns for the first time. Even when cards graded lower than expected, he didn’t complain like many YouTuber’s do now but was still excited. You could tell that he genuinely enjoyed the chase and the thrill of collecting.

I think we need a Gemmintpokemon resurgence in 2021.
