Metapoo and DShits shills need to remember that Pokémon didn’t *need* the equivalent of modern-day influencer hype and shilling to push sales. It got where it is because it is a fundamentally appetising brand with organic appeal. It will continue to persevere under its own steam regardless of social media influence. TPC took its time creating a genuine quality franchise without a questionable-at-best underlying ethic.
Watching people buy and hype these TCG-equivalents of worthless crypto meme coins is incredibly transparent, and really fucking cringe.

I think apologizing for what went wrong was good 1st step on his end. A good second step would be to give people some sort of a refund.

As Josh hypes on a Pokémon social media site lol. Seriously though, people marketing stuff on social media is pretty much expected in this day and age. It would probably be irresponsible to ignore it for entrepreneurs and businesses.
I disagree, Pokemon did need the attention.
Perhaps not for the sealed product, but the market for singles did.
I have been in this since 2000, buying/selling and teaching the game and closed my webstore in 2007 simply because there was no demand.
So don’t claim Pokemon would have come to the level it is now on own steam. Not even close.
Pokemon TCG sales went up each time a gameboy/DS game was released, but also died soon after it.
While I don’t like each way Pokemon get’s “promoted” by influencers, I do like the effect it had to sales of single cards.

I think a lot of the negativity towards these post 2020 tcgs is that success is gauged by the speculation on sealed product pricing. Calling a TCG owner “the real deal”, rather then addressing the unique selling points of the tcg e.g. mechanics or artwork is not going to attract organic growth.
I may be flattering myself by calling myself a true collector/player but the art and gameplay of multi-level marketing just does not interest me. Art is subjective but generally the most widely appreciated modern Pokemon cards are the alternative arts. Nostalgia can be leaned on for generating hype such as the Retro frame MTG cards and celebrations reprints but these new TCGs cannot use this.
Making a TCG is hard and the sustained success is very rare. I think is natural to question why all these TCGs have sprung up in the last 2 years and why box prices are at prices that Pokemon took 15 years to get to. Especially as these games are not carried or supported in large amounts of LGS’s. MTG is the only successful TCG that I know of without a media franchise backing it and look at how many LGS’s support it.
Back to topic, I think the event should take some credit albeit there was execution issues. Hopefully there are future events where lessons are learned and more thought is put towards entertaining the attendees.

Pokémon has games, anime, cards, and a world wide following.
These start up TCGs have just cardboard, so they require the social media hype buildup in order to temporarily drive fake demand.

Josh didn’t claim pokemon would’ve reached these levels without the “influence.” He said it didn’t need the influence to push sales. There’s a big difference
