Title says it all. Thoughts?
Lotta folks were hating on it in the “least fav wotc set” thread.
However, I loved opening this set as a kid. It was definitely one of my favorites. Getting a holo in every pack was revolutionary. Prices for the reverse holos are pretty high nowadays so I can’t really say it’s underrated though. It’s fairly rated based on prices imo.
edit: it also has one of my fav booster boxes. its holo! and it also has one of the most expensive (if not most expensive?) non-holo rare set card of all time.

It was better than Base Set 2. I thought it was nice at the time that it had some of the neat cards from earlier sets in it, but it really did feel like just another reprint at the time. The saving grace was the reverse holographics, which although not super pretty (I thought they were stickers back then), were a precursor to the reverse holographic cards we have now. When you build a successful product it can be easy to stagnate and repeat the same things that brought you success in the first place, but Pokemon constantly innovates, which I think had led to its long term success.
The reverse foils aren’t my taste and remind me of fake cards. Much prefer the legendary collection holos of cards that weren’t originally holo.
For example:
Oh man I completely forgot about that. It also had that Mewtwo that was previously only a BSP, for better or for worse. Super cool card though.
being able to get dark blastoise as a galaxy holo instead of cosmos holo is also pretty cool

I am a sucker for cosmos not going to lie, but galaxy does look nice on him. ![]()
Its better than Base 2, but ultimately a reprint set. While the Firework holo has grown on me a bit, I just can’t get that excited about a holo variant.
Same, I very much disliked the reverse holo pattern then, but as I got older it grew on me. Maybe it’s just the fact that it’s so unique, especially for the time?
I really like the holo versions of cards that were not holo upon their original release, but otherwise there’s nothing about the general set that would make the reprints preferable to their original release. Base Set 2 may not be an exciting set, but the different holo pattern at least brings something different to the table for all the available cards.
I do like the set list, and I like seeing all those cards together in one set. It’s a cool set, but there’s also nothing about it that would ever make it a priority for me to collect.
I will join the camp of people who have warmed up to the firework reverse holos. I used to hate them so much, but with time my distaste has mellowed to something more tolerable. I kinda like them now, at least when seeing them all together.
Neither imo
The set isn’t for everyone, but idk if i’d call it over/underrated. I like it. The reverses are unique and the “over the top-ness” of them is part of what attracts me to the set. I don’t have any vivid memories of opening anything wotc, so the reprint aspect of the set (and Base Set 2 for that matter) aren’t detractors. If I was more familiar with the sets at the time of release, maybe my opinion would be more negative.
If Legendary collection had the unique holo + unique arts it would truly be Legendary.
It has grown on me too.
As a kid I found it very annoying. The fireworks pattern makes it harder to read the text on the cards. This was especially true when playing the game with an opponent that had them in their deck. That angle from the other side of the table was really awful!
Most of those cards were no longer competitive either, at least within the late Neo meta game, so I probably also developed a mental association of “fireworks cards = noob cards”.
Now as an adult I really have developed an appreciation for these cards.
I remember when I came back to the hobby in 2016 I stumbled on GemMintPokemon’s videos. I recall he was chasing the complete PSA 10 Legendary Collection set at the time. His videos introduced me to professional grading and really were inspirational. Now whenever I think of Legendary Collection I am reminded of those fond memories and learning experiences that pulled me into next-level collecting.
I personally find the reverses really ugly. But that’s obviously subjective – some people seem to like them.
Something going for the set that hasn’t yet been mentioned is that it’s significantly scarcer than Base/Jungle/Fossil/Rocket/etc. LC sealed product in particular is much more difficult to find. So the set has a more of a “chase,” and feels premium relative to Base 2 (which was printed into the ground).
I have almost no interest in Legendary Collection, but I can understand why others like it.
i thought the same until I saw @PokemonClassics collection. made me regret every time i passed on a card from legendary
Definitely overrated. I never even remember the set and I collected past it as a kid. I never even heard of it until people started stonking on it in 2020. I feel like it has been hyped the past couple years and I don’t know why. If you don’t like the reverse holo pattern, I feel like there is nothing in it that stands out past that. Save for a couple holos and the Christopher Rush Mewtwo, It’s basically Base Set 3. I don’t care for it.
The hype for Legendary Collection started long before the 2020 boom. It started gaining traction around 2015 and really started to blow up during the Pokemon Go boom.
Oh really? Interesting. I was on my big hiatus at that time so I was clueless to the hobby.
I don’t collect WotC but if I were to start, I’d probably start at Legendary Collection.
1st Edition Dark Blastoise (Rocket) PSA 9 vs Legendary Collection Dark Blastoise PSA 9.
Pop 1475 vs pop 115.
1st Edition generally sells for more.
I get that Team Rocket is the more desirable one but perhaps the EX collector in me prefers scarcity over desirability. I think LC regular holos are underrated personally.
