Hell yes. It suffers from âoh hey look, theres a charizard in this set.It must be worth $$$â syndrome. That, the crystals and the small print run mean its a fortune. Not for me.
Yes and No. It was the last WOTC set to be released and had a small print run. Also, it has some pretty nice artwork between the holos and crystals. Considerably speaking i feel like the prices are relatively fair. I have seen a increase in price in the crystals recently
the E series holos are expensive for a good reason. There was 32 holofoil cards included in one set instead of the usual 15-16. On average you would have to open three booster boxes of skyridge just to receive one of each regular holo, assuming you would pull 9-12 holos and 1-3 crystals per box. Also, pokemon wasnât so popular anymore during this time and fewer cards were printed (compared to base->neo days).
Ascetically, I donât think you can make a more eye popping, clean box with the shiny green. Any of the E-reader sets had without the doubt the best looking box designs. The wrapping alone was so sharp and pleasing to keep sealed. The holo art work was very undervalued compared to that of some of todayâs. Also following how well Aquapolis has done, it actually has kept the hype very well in my opinion.
I donât think itâs overrated. Along with the points already mentioned of just how aesthetically pleasing the box is, the packs are, and imo the cards/crystals, it was also one of the least printed set from wotc. Pretty sure it had a short print run because wotc lost their privileges to continue to print at the time skyridge was being printed. Because of the exclusivity, the aesthetics of the overall set and the fact that thereâs charizard I donât think itâs overvalued at all. Itâs earned itâs current price tag and I still see it continuing to go up.
The value of skyridge booster boxes comes down to basic economics.
The supply of these booster boxes are limited for the following reasons:
*old set so naturally over time the supply has reduced as boxes have been opened
*it had a short print run as it was the last set to be produced by WOTC before the rights were passed onto nintendo and therefore the amount of product to have been brought to the market may have been limited when conpared to other sets
Conversely to low supply, there is a high demand for this booster box thus pushing upthe price. Reason for this demand are;
-boooster box collectors wish to own one
thete is a mentality of âfear of missing outâ (FOMO) so when one goes to auction, buyers will be very interested to try an obtain one as they feel it could be their last chance to do so at a market rates (or at least for a while)
-small select of people may wish to crack it for the purpose of obtaining the crystal cards and/or holos
The above logic (with exception of limited print run) can be applied to most booster boxes however the supply demand forces are a bit stronger in the instance of skyridge.
It also appears that this box is somewhat glorified on instagram.
Itâs obviously a âhotâ item right now and social media is a catalyst for that. However, for a box that was so readily available for so long, does it make sense that it is one of the most expensive boxes of all? The problem with economics is that it assumes rational behavior. Does a Skyridge booster box pack $3500+ of value? If you ask me, probably not. In theory, if you graded all of the valuable cards you could earn back that amount but there would be slim margins even if you got lucky with pulls. I know the potential contents are just part of the value equation here but it becomes more relevant as the sealed box price increases. At a certain point the price of the box will start to drive the price of the single cards OR the price of the box will become unsustainable and decline (growth will slow)
Iâll give the set credit for being one of the best ever but itâs just not as classic as other sets. In general, most of our warm fuzzy Pokemon memories are not from the e-reader era. To me it seems hyped right now.
One thing to add that may help explain the seemingly high price, is that the print quality for Skyridge is very good. @gottaketchumall did a PSA rundown of all the wotc sets a while back and Skyridge was among if not the highest for PSA 10 ratios at around 50%?
You have merit. Unfortunately I feel once people obtain these boxes they wonât want to let go unless they can get a price above what they paid resulting in a continous creep up. Are there examples of any boxes that were selling very high and then dropping by say 20%+ and staying that way?
If I opened a box of Skyridge I could probably die happy right now lol
People used to crack these all the time. I remember opening about half a box myself. Unfortunately, I waited too long to ever purchase a whole box
I donât think I ever opened oneâŚI have opened 2 sealed aquapolis boxes. One of my first YT videos. I pulled all 3 crystals. The e series grade so well.
I love the cards in this set. The artwork is simply gorgeous. That being said I donât think it is overvalued because all e-Series sets had such a limited print run that they are highly collectible these days.
