What I love about the binders is that I get to see all of the cards and all of the arts. I actually like to go through them. I pull the cards out like I do in the videos. I’m still trying to complete a few binders. I have binder copies of all the big cards. All of the shinings, EXs, gold stars, crystals, etc. The cards I still need are mint copies of some of the reverse holos from emerald, holon phantoms, unseen forces, delta species and crystal guardians. I also have a list of cards that are currently filling spots in binders but that I would like to upgrade to PSA 9 level copies when one comes up. I have about 50 saved ebay searches that I’m regularly monitoring and that’s about all I have time for right now.
That’s an indirect answer to your question, but the answer is that I’m not looking to complete all of the neo sets in PSA 10 at this time. Everybody collects their own way, and one thing I learned from my collection of several thousand BGS slabbed MtG cards was that I have a hard time enjoying that many graded cards. I want to have a small enough number of graded cards that I can look at them, appreciate them and enjoy them. The way I store my cards in PSA-slab binders, I probably have room for about 30 more PSA 10 cards. I want to make them count. My favorite cards, my favorite arts, favorite sets, etc. I want to give myself some time to soak up the hobby and the cards to figure out what I love the most. I am not on a quest to get a PSA 10 copy of every card. I’ve already had that experience in a different hobby and for myself I am over it. In terms if what I will pick up in PSA 10, it’s just as likely to be an EX card or even a modern card as it is a WOTC card at this stage. My short list of WOTC cards only has maybe 6 cards on it right now
Cool, re: the holo bleeds. That’s where the holo underneath bleeds out into the rest of the card? I’ll have to check that out. Also, I totally forgot this binder was the start of the shinings until I got to the end. I needed to pull out the PSA 10 gyarados and magikarp. I’ll lump them into the next video when and do them with the neo destiny shinings
Really nice video @jonandek. I think @7l7l is correct; the Blissey also looks like it. I don’t know of any Neo Rev cards where the holo shows through the rest of the card, but some cards have a really sparkly holo, whereas the ‘normal’ versions don’t sparkle that much. Ho-oh is probably the one where it’s most visible in general, but if you look at your Misdreavus versus a plain one, a plain one will not have holo over the eyes.
“Holo bleed” can describe when a holo pattern is visible throughout the card (outside of the creature art box and into, e.g., the attacks), but in the context of Neo Rev it describes a holo pattern variation occurring within the creature art box.
Most Neo Rev holos have a low (or weak) amount of holo sprinkled throughout the creature art box. But sometimes (rarely) the holo is much more pronounced. The variation is particularly visible on some cards (e.g., see how Misdreavus’s eyes light up compared to other copies?). Here’s another comparison:
You’re the lucky owner of a special Magikarp! (First edition Neo Rev holo bleeds, especially in higher grades, are quite rare)
Awesome! Thanks for the info. Now I have to go check all of my neo rev holos esp the PSA 10 gyarados and karp. Based on pictures I have on my phone I don’t think they have the holo bleed though. Learning a lot from people here - much appreciated!
Thanks man. The PSA 10 1st edition base, fossil, jungle were the only original goals I had. Then the 1st ed base/shadowless/unlimited binder came next. The rest of the PSA 10s followed. Then I decided I needed to have a mint copy of every WOTC era set card. Then I decided I needed to have a mint copy of every EX era set card. So that’s where it sits. Some of it definitely got a bit crazy. 27 PSA 10 gold stars and 27 PSA 9 gold stars. Double copies of all of the shining cards, etc. The only PSA 10 cards I own that I don’t also have a mint copy of in my binder are the skyridge holos (H1-H32) and the skyridge crystals. I sent my 9s of those to PWCC before I had fully sorted out what I was trying to do and they sold in the last auction. I am getting really, really close to having it all done.
Given all of the time during COVID I was able to sort out and accelerate my collecting quite a bit. But I only started collecting around mid-January of this year.
EDIT: I only started collecting Pokemon earlier this year. I have been collecting various things, from toys to baseball cards to comic books, since the 1980s
I’ve had extensive experience with CGC for comic books. They are the gold standard there. I’ve used Beckett for magic cards although PSA also grades a lot of magic cards. I’ve been pretty open about how I feel about Beckett at this stage. I consider Pokemon to be a PSA hobby so if I ever were to get all of my binder cards regraded, that’s who I would likely use. Although I do view the binder cards as a hedge against any one particular grading company, against standards changing, labels changing, etc
Here some more side-by-sides of the Neo Revelations holo bleed errors: www.elitefourum.com/t/complete-neo-revelation-error-holo-set/15469/1 On some, like Ampharos, you barely see the difference. While on others, like Crobat, it makes a whole of difference between regular and misprinted versions.
And since you seem to be interested in these kind of things, like censored artworks; Neo Revelations holo bleeds; etc., here some other similar variations you might not know about:
Cosmos Holofoil unlimited edition Fossil cards (it is believed they might have been some kind of test print that leaked out, but not sure - there are definitely not a lot of these out there)
Quuador thanks for that! I do tend to like to collect errors and variations of set cards. The neo revelation holo bleed is a cool one in particular. I need to spend more time thinking about the others… with MtG I collected (and still have) a set of cards called “alternate 4th edition” which reminds me of some of these other niche unlimited runs. That set was basically magic cards printed on playing card stock. At the end of the day if it’s too niche and is an alternate version of unlimited cards it probably won’t appeal to me as much based on my experience with that set. The reason that I still have the set is that it’s almost too niche to sell! The jungle no symbol holos may be as far as I will go collecting unlimited card variations.
major collection thread overhaul. I moved everything to the first page so there’s no need to scroll through the thread to find anything. I’ve consolidated all pictures and binder videos to the first page as well. I’ll still create a new post when I have an update, but will post all actual updates to the first page of the thread from now on.
Also, while I am trying with the binder videos, some of them are still appearing sideways. I need to figure out how to fix that. In the interim, they may be best viewed on a mobile device…
Incredible collection! I just wanted to stop in to say how much I enjoy watching your videos.
It’s a pleasure to see a binder video appreciating the beauty in both the art and condition of the cards, more so than the value. I agree with the preference for sets being displayed in binders rather than scattered graded cards (the graded binders are a great compromise), as it really allows you to appreciated the flow and themes, for sets like Skyridge particularly.
I am also a fan of your personal delivery; I definitely find the calmer and more measured style more appealing than a lot of Pokemon content, and yours is almost therapeutic to watch. Hopefully you enjoy making them and continue as your collection grows.
I was wondering if you had a favourite Pokemon illustrator, or one whose art you consistently find yourself drawn to across the sets?
Thank you for reminding me! I have a stunning PSA 10 gyarados gold star. It’s one of those strong PSA 10s that I feel so lucky to own of a hard to find and also popular card. I didn’t realize it was not in the pictures!
And thanks so much for taking the time to go through and to notice a detail like that. I’m really excited to make a video on the gold stars. I have mint binder copies of all of them too. Except the umbreon and espeon. I just have the graded versions as I don’t plan to collect the pop series sets, at least at this time.
Thanks for that. It really means a lot. I feel like my videos are so amateur. I just have very little time lately as work has picked up dramatically (I may foresee another Q4 buying spree ;-). I literally made the aquapolis and skyridge videos in short breaks between work calls yesterday. I’m having all sorts of technical difficulties with them like getting them to upload in landscape which is how I recorded the last few. I’ll be out of town next week so I’m going to try and fix the orientation on a few of them then.
On the plus side, my office will be remote through year end so I get to be home with my cards all day. That means I have time to finish the videos and also hopefully fix them. I never could have dreamed I’d have time to do all of this outside of retirement. Sure beats being on the road, hotels and airplanes several days per week. I was Initially sad when my concierge key status expired with american airlines this week. Then I quickly realized that I couldn’t care less right now and wouldn’t trade the time for the world.
