Japanese Gym Heroes 291 yen vs 300

Hi,
I’m curious about the Japanese sets I’ve noticed that there are Gym Heroes packs with 291 yen and others with 300. For some reason on eBay the 300 ones seem to go for sale at a higher price. Why is that? Is the 300 more rare?
Can you tell from the box which of the two the packs inside will be?

Thanks!

If I remember correctly 291 yen packs were the first print of the packs and the 300 yen packs were after with tax included. I have no clue as to find out if a box will have 291 or 300 yen packs though.

Interesting, so how would that correlate with price today? Shouldn’t the first print be more expensive? Or was were the 300 yen packs just more rare?
Or do people just put the 300 up for sale higher price for no real reason?

IMO. There’s really no reason why one should sell more than another. They are basically the same pack. The only difference is the number on the pack. It’s not like it’s a 1st edition vs an unlimited pack. Most people just don’t care about a pack being 291 vs 300 yen.

Ok thanks, good to know!

In Japan consumption tax was increased from 3% to 5% on 1 April 1997. That is the reason we have the two pack prices.

However it is a bit confusing with Gym 1 as the release date was 24 October 1998. I’m thinking possibly the sets and pack art were pre printed way in advance.

Good piece of info there! Thanks for the history lesson, I wasn’t aware of that.

And fun fact, Gym 2 also exists in a 291 yen version and was released on 25 June 1999 !
