I don’t really love when people say this. The cards being out for ‘x’ amount of years is sort of an arbitrary sentiment in this context. People all live different lives with different experiences. What if they’re 16? If you happened to get back into the hobby now, rather than whenever you did, you’d probably be stressing about prices too. I’m really not trying to be rude, that stuff just isn’t constructive for new collectors.
That being said, all that regrade shit is probably a waste of time, near mint singles are still relatively affordable and potentially have room to move around
Everyone was priced out of something when they first got back into the hobby. There isn’t a single member on this forum who wasn’t priced out of something at some point. It is what it is. You adapt and move on.
It’s the same as movie spoilers. Should we never talk about movie spoilers from the 80’s because some kids today might not have seen them? That’s rediculous.
I was born in 1991. I love Golden Age comic books, should I be MAD that they were never affordable in my lifetime? Or should I just be happy they are being appreciated?
I also love Rolex’s. How dare they not be as cheap as they were 70 years ago!?
If a 16 year old loves the artwork, they can get shadowless.
If they can’t afford that, get Unlimited.
If they can’t afford that, get Base 2.
If they can’t afford that, get Legendary Collections.
If they can’t afford that, get Evolutions.
I agree with you, it’s a very elitist point of view. Most one can do is ignore it and adjust your goals, one can still buy base set 2 and even unlimited for affordable prices (and those are the same cards without the stamp).
I think the emphasis was on ‘1st edition’ and on base set. I’m not sure if there was any emphasis even placed on base set unlimited (non 1st edition cards) or evolutions.
You could see people trading in evolutions for 1st edition packs wotc
@admiral, I think you guys are kind of missing my point. I wasn’t referring to the nature of market growth pricing out collectors, I was referring to the way I see people respond to new collectors regarding these worries. If you were like “damn, I wish I could’ve owned one of those comics I love so much!” and some people who owned a ton of them were like “sucks to be you, they’ve been out for 100 years (or however long it’s been)” you’d probably kinda just scratch your head and be like “okay??” It doesn’t change the fact that some new collectors are gonna be disappointed that they won’t be able to collect some items they love; I think that’s understandable.
In addition, if anything could be afforded by anyone, then everything would lose its collectability. A large part of the drive to collect things is rooted in the challenge. If I could afford each and every single card I wanted, I would probably get bored pretty quickly. But that’s the great thing about Pokemon cards: there are so many different cards and so many ways to collect them that you can never just buy everything and be finished. There’s always more to collect. That challenge is what keeps people interested and what motivates people to continue collecting.
Good thing Base 1st edition is far from the rarest set. Check the pops. Even base first edition is a very common set… The other big problem with base 1st edition/unlimited/shadowless is everybody and their mother will all list their cards at once the second the price increases.
There’s always a way to collect the item you love. If you love Base Set Charizards, buy an Unlimited copy. If you love LV.Xs, buy ones in poor condition. If you love trophy cards, then you’re out of luck lol, but you get my point. Almost everyone can afford some version of what they love, even if it’s not the ideal version.
