I have this weird version of a sealed pokemon scoop. can you guys help me out

hi, i collect deoxys, its fun so far, got my first sealed product of japanese ebay.

pokemon scoop is so underground and super unknown that when searching for a certain deoxys promo i stumbled upon the sealed copy, waited like 4 weeks, and bought it.

heres the listing photo.

so it arrives like last week, open in up, out of its mailer, its still sealed because well.

i was organizing my collection of deoxys tcg, and i realized, hmm, the card i need from this magazine, is not in the magazine, it should be 017/PCG-P, the other deoxys attack forme from deoxys ex expansion. and at first i really thought bulbapedia was wrong, pokemon historian was wrong, heck even serebii, all of em say the 017 deoxys, not this one, its not the defense forme from the pokemon wonderland promos from the same circulation time, its an attack forme. one that was released in the sky splitting movie lenticular vs pack

now they both released at the same time, which is kinda cool, fun deoxys history lesson, but this card shouldnt be in there. and once i saw another sealed copy like 2 days ago:

im positive this has been tampered with, but the acutal card that comes with it isnt worth much, why put a way more expensive card in there? because this is a promo card, dont get me wrong, but all the known pokemon databases claim two versions, why is mine still sealed!? why is pokemon scoop so obscure i cant find any info on it,

so i know of the special edition, and the festa edition, the special edition has the rayquaza sp cd and the card, but theres some loose cardless ones that look still sealed, so my burning questions after 7 weeks of researching my favorite pokemon.

a) is there variants of this issue we dont know about, or lost to time unarchived because deoxys is a obscure pokemon
b) why didnt mine come with the actual listed card, error at the plant? subtle bait and switch 20 years ago by some harajuku prankster? slim odds but fun to imagine.
c) can we please get scans of pokemon scoop online, i dont want to open this because i want to know more about it, all i know its legit.

i found another one that had that red indicator on the bag saying yes it is sealed,

I don’t know this product, but the seal doesn’t exactly look pristine. What red indicator are you talking about that indicates it’s still sealed? These seals are often pretty easy to open and just close again without it looking too bad. Is it possible this is just resealed and the seller remembered it came with a Deoxys promo but forgot which one and put another one back in? Not sure if I’m misunderstanding anything here.

yeah sorry i write weird.

so the little red rectangle near the top right, that is the original bag, i compared seams on both photos and they both look similar enough to stray me away from tampering as i was looking at loose copies in bags, not many sealed examples are floating up, so it took a few weeks to confirm that is indeed a sealed copy.

the second set of photos is what it should look like with correct promo card, mine is sealed, there is gunk and if i ripped it good enough it peel, no tampering as it was advertised as sealed, verified as sealed, and came from a sealed collector in japan. i just paid the pokemon hype premium for it.

the vs commemoration movie pack features my promo card, and it was released at the same time as this issue of pokemon scoop, there is a variation with a different back, advertising the destiny deoxys movie in japan, but most are the rayquaza gameboy sp giveaways.

so my burning question, is there a movie pack that got swapped with this card or is this an undocumented version of this, could it be an error placement and some kid opened up a deoxys he didnt realize was not supposed to be in there? so many questions may go unanswered because of the scans being down or any documentation, pokemon history is important, even the little insider magazines.

Is this the red thing you’re referring too? I understand that this would verify that the covering is indeed the original plastic covering, but it doesn’t indicate anything about whether the item is unopened to me. I tried to look up a few of these magazines on Ebay and couldn’t quite tell what the exact seal was, but if the seal is like some of them that I’ve seen on other items (e.g. postcard sets and Pokemon information booklets—see below for pictures), these seals are absolutely easy to peel open and close nicely again. These are in no way tamper-proof.

See this listing, for example. These three information booklets have very nice, neat-looking seals on the back (see picture below), but they’re all missing the promo card that comes with the booklet, which means they were previously opened.

Given that your magazine has the wrong card in it and that the card is possibly on the wrong side of the magazine (your second example and the couple of copies I saw on Ebay all had the card in the back with the CD, although one had the back side of the card showing and the other had the front side), I’m guessing your copy is probably not an unopened copy. Again, if the seal is similar to those that I’m thinking of, I think verifying a copy was unopened might be near impossible.

Hope this has been helpful.

This is strange.

Here’s what the lenticular deoxys looks like, notice there is a bit of red text in the bottom border of the card.

This doesn’t look like the card you posted in the OP, although it does have the vs mark. When I looked into summer scoop last year I read that attack form deoxys is the expected promo.

Maybe I am really misunderstanding this, but the promo card which should be with the Pokemon Scoop magazie is the 019/PCG-P which is the Attack Form Deoxys. Based on the evidence that you have, it looks like it was resealed more than anything else, more likely the below scenario.

Off all the sealed copies I have seen, they never include the card copy in the front of the magazine, which is where the artwork of the front page and the details are. The cards are always usually on the back end or supplementary end of the magazine which in this case should have been with the CD rom.

Cheers!

so i asked the seller more info, it is in fact original seal, which is cool. i paid sealed prices for it so i expect it to be sealed, more so, he said a third version was made in 2005, which is odd, but again with a thing so underarchived as pokemon scoop, i trust the guy from the mainland to give me some info, he was very nice about it too.

This biases your seller, they could lie

there is no way to actually force that card to the back, it was placed there way back when.

so to kindly refute the resealed allegations

  • the seller confirmed its original seal, no tampering, with evidence of a mysterious third version released a year later.
  • the seal hasnt been opened, the adhesive is very brittle and any small tears would unseal it pretty easily, the “gunk and grime” is near and under the seal, which points to evidence of just casual storage, as overtime adhesives like tape or glue do slowly degrade, then dust would collect under the seal froma ge and wear of being stored, if it was resealed the adhesive wouldve been stronger and way more recent. but the fact its an almost a weak seal leans more into weak sealed due to age not resealed. i can feel tension on the seal but any wrong moves and that thing is getting unsealed since it was released in 2004

and finally
– the movie vs commemoration pack was released on July 17, 2004
–this copy of pokemon scoop was also released July 17, 2004

i think someone just simply put the wrong card in this issue as the special movie pack was released same day, so maybe in the final touches of promo and release, some worker just got the cards switched up. makes sense as the release date was the same day,

ive been just searching for everything pokemon scoop since i got it for the deoxys card, seriously i was gonna open it and have fun with it, but until i learn the history of this mysterious “2005 issue” and why issue contains a card released on the same day.

this is one of the coolest things i own, because i have been searching high and low for everything about it, and yknow, its not archived at all. so a lot of “ifs, hows and whys”

he sent me a kindly worded ebay message about it.

Hello. I am glad it reached you.
After you mentioned it, I looked it up and it looks like there is a winter version that is from the same year. The other one seems to be in a different year, like 2005.

so he got confused abotu the winter issue, but looking it up, the winter issue

winter issue

it was the next exact issue, what card came with it?

no idea but i found scans. and they tease this exact pack in it. the movie vs pack.

winter issue ad

not much is known about winter 2005 on here, pokemon scoop seemed seasonal to correspond with the releases, as winter 2005 is really winter 2004, december 2004 to be exact

but not much is known on what card came with it. the three cards you could get from the movie pack, the only actual card you could get from that pack, was defense forme in pokemon wonderland. the plot thickens and im getting deeper into the rabbit hole now.

this card is not supposed to be available in any copy of pokemon scoop, yet due to release days being the same, there is the miniscule chance a worker at pokemon just put the wrong card in as they were released the same time, no tampering, no reseal shenanignans.

becuase really think about it “why would someone sell me a resealed copy of the magazine that has a card from the special set that released the same day.”

very far reaching and very rude to assume japanese pokemon collectors are dabbling in resealing an ancient piece of pokemon history, one so ancient not much is known about it online, yes let me ruin my cred online as a japanese pokemon seller by selling an american a resealed copy with a more expensive card, not like im selling it for much. i got it on discount, this guy had no idea what it truly was, and he does not claim it is resealed in anyway.

actually to even refute this more, nearly all resealed copies have the card on the back, but so do the loose copies with promo still cib. so there is no tried and true way to determine if a scoop was resealed, scoop is so rare theres like 3 other copies for sale with a card in it, the sellers who claim they are sealed, are sealed, loose ones get worded accordingly on eBay. no shenanigans on eBay at all, this a very rare and weirdly historic copy of pokemon scoop.

still cool to think about it.

the movie pack released with the lenticular and the 3 copies that make up the lenticular, that one i can confirm as nearly all known sources confirm the deck listing for that pack.

again released on the same day, im leaning into some poor worker 20 years ago made something so accidentally cool, 20 years later some weirdo pokemon collector has a spaz attack over the history of it. i do want that lenticular card, a few of them, they are just so pricey even in awful condition.

Is the card that you received lenticular? Cannot tell from the photo but it is not the known lenticular variant, those have red text at the bottom of card like the example above.

Anyone can be motivated by money, being Japanese doesn’t make a seller immune to self-interest. I know because I bought resealed products from Japanese scammers.

Keep in mind that as the buyer you’re now financially biased to believe that magazine you bought it legitimate.

In this case resealing means using the original adhesive to re-close the original sleeve. No one thinks a new glue was added.

yes and no, the deoxys sky splitting lenticular card was released along side 3 cards in the movie commemoration pack.

normal forme deoxys (which is sort of posted on here)
attack forme deoxys (my weirdly relevant copy)
defense forme deoxys (pokemon wonder land or movie pack)

all three of these cards make up the lenticular card, as its 3 in one, i have one of three cards that make up that special card.

again, this piece of pokemon is so rare id highly believe anyone would reseal it, let alone with the same card from a different pack released same day, if it was resealed, i wouldve gotten my money back already, but the seller wasnt a modern day pokemon fan, his eBay has rare stuff like this scoop, im assuming hes a rare pokemon collector, history may or may not be first in command when he sells this. money is def the M.O. but he was nice enough to discount it for me, 10 bucks off its original price, a sealed copy with the normal card goes for like 60-100 dollars, i paid about 70, on par for the sealed pricing, loose and missing items for for 30-60 on the high.

nothing is putting me on the side of “resealed”

the card is wrong, but released same day in a different pack. its an attack forme, which is the card released in this issue, someone put the right deoxys, wrong card in here, from the same day of release, im sure of it.

the seller was confused but didnt dabble in pokemon scoop, so to him he had a pokemon magazine with a card in it, score, lets sell it online for its actual sealed price. it is sealed after all, dude was clueless to the card, like he didnt realize pokemon scoop came with other cards. some didnt, theres three versions of this issue i know of.

-rayquaza gameboy contest back (my copy)
-destiny deoxys movie promo back (mainly loose copies oddly enough)
-and this weird copy with the wrong attack forme promo

Because you are ignoring key red flags

Gunk and grime under the seal is a sign that the original seal has been broken.

I appreciate your passion for the species and trying to find all possible versions for it. Myself and the others who have replied do not come from a place of malice of any kind but there is a possibility that there is some tunnel visioning going on.

As @BANKS and @bbobrob stated, when re-sealed is mentioned , it did not mean the way you see booster packs being re-sealed. The plastic covers which contains the magzines are self-sealing. Meaning they can be opened and then sealed back again for multiple uses. Usually over multiple uses the adhesive deteriorates and if not sealed correctly, will have dust, grime mix with the adhesive forming gunk, wich you also see in your case.

I personally do not think they are very rare, atleast not this edition. I can at this moment find 3-4 copies of this issue on Mercari JP, which are sealed and also very affordable.

First and second are the same. When you remove the gameboy entry contest pamplet from the back of the magazine, it reveals the back cover of the magazine which is the Deoxys movie promo copy. That is why you only see the back cover on loose copies, because the phamplet has been removed. This is not due to 2 different versions. This is clear in the image below. The edge of the back cover is visible.

You have the card number 002 from the Movie commemoration half deck, which is the attack forme Deoxys. Which I believe supports the hypothesis made by @bbobrob. I am not saying the seller you interacted with is lying to you, it is also very likely that the seller also acquired this copy from someone or somewhere and since they did not know much about it did not bother to check whether the card is correct or if it is sealed correctly.

I have really tried to look at other possible variations and all the listing (sold or active) I have seen for this magazine always contains the 019/PCG-P copy only. The VS set and the magazine releasing on the same day does not mean that they are being pacakged and shipped in the very same location for an operator error.

The more plausible scenario is that, someone swapped the Attack Forme Deoxys promo card (019/PCG-P) from the magazine with the Attack Forme Deoxys card from the Commemoration Pack. Since both are Attack Forme, it is hard to distinguish if something has been swapped. I would be happy to be proved wrong otherwise since it would be a one of a kind copy.

Cheers!

i have reached the same conclusion, but you didnt post the second version that features the sky splitting visitor on the back, i think that one is the pokemon festa version, some appear to have this red banner, some dont. i think mine is the special edition aka “the second version” both were printed and released within weeks, i think days of eachother. so they coincide with pokemon festa and the giveaway for the rayquaza sps, along with the movie pack

but something made me think. “this copy has a facing card, and its opened. mine has a facing card too, but i dunno if its opened.”

usually the collectors put it exactly where it was when they got it, i see one copy with a forward facing card, and its the correct card, with original bag, unsealed.

i can believe it was unsealed at some point, but based on how pokemon collectors subconsciously have to put everything back when it get something sealed and usually in box. was this the original card in the magazine? i asked an old pokemon collector friend, has about the weirdest knowledge i have, and he blanked out, like he was thinking. really hard, those gears were turning i know it.

“there was a website that was dedicated to each and every one of these, and i think that was one of them. That is a good one dude, i cant remember much, Either its long gone or its buried deep, deep under the search engines.” hes off to find that website, i respect his views and knowledge as he corrected me on a lot of things growing up that led me to rare and historical pokemon archival stuff like staff cards, event banners, and the history of prereleases gen 2 onwards. so if anyone could find it, it’d be him.

at most that card is attached to magazine originally, no way a collector would face it forward unless he/she got it from that magazine, all the copies i see are facing backwards in the back of the magazine, those are sealed. but this one is opened, has the original card, and cd. and hes facing it outwards. at minimum yeah someone opened the movie pack 21 years ago and put the wrong deoxys back in the mag, both equally cool stories if true.

I think there are 2 versions of the booklet. There is the ‘Pokemon Daisuki Club’ version which just comes with the CD-ROM and no card, which also does not include the Rayquaza Gameboy contest phamplet.

The card was added later as a supplement which then also changes the outer packaging to have the 'RED" box which basically is stating that this booklet has a supplement which is the Deoxys card. So in essence, if the booklet contains the deoxys promo card, then it should have the packaging with the red box on the front. And the card is the 019/PCG-P and not any other version.

So, you have the version of the booklet with the promo card as the supplement, just not the right card. I would just leave the mystery at that as to how you have a different version since I realize I am not great at solving mysteries.

Cheers!

Hey, PokeHistorian here. Interesting thread. We have full scans of most Scoop issues on our website here.

The Deoxys enclosed in Scoop Summer 2004 should ordinarily be 019/PCG-P. (017 was in Shogakukan Elementary mags; 018 in Pokémon Wonderland Vol.2).

It’s definitely odd that your Scoop came with a different Deoxys. I don’t have a clear explanation, but one thought did cross my mind.

Scoop was a highly disposable, seasonal freebie magazine given out at PokeCenters and certain Poke-related events. I don’t have the numbers, but I imagine its print runs were fairly large. From what I understand, these were one-and-done type deals. An X number of mini-mags were printed and made available at Festa, PokeCenters, you name it - and once all had been handed out, that was it.

It is theoretically conceivable that an insufficient number of 019 Deoxys were printed with VS Deoxys substituted to make up the deficit. To be clear, this is complete conjecture - I’ve monitored Mercari extensively for Scoop issues, and your Summer 2004 issue is the first indication that something funny may have happened. Assuming, of course, that the copy wasn’t simply resealed with a comparable promo inside to jack up the product’s market value.

Also a note on Scoop in general. While the magazine wasn’t rare in its day, because of its disposable nature, Scoop issues don’t show up on Mercari too often and when they do they can be pricey, even when stripped of all promotional goodies.

We’re still working on our archive and looking for full scans of the following issues (all contributions welcome!).
2002 (Groudon / Kyogre cover)
Winter 2003 (Ash & Pikachu cover)
Spring 2006 (CD-ROM)
Spring 2008 (Pokémon Ranger cover)
