How rare are Japanese CD promo cards?

I recently bought a PSA 10 Venusaur holo CD Promo from ebay for $25.

I was happy as I thought it was a pretty good deal for a PSA 10, also considering past sold prices which go over $40 for Venusaur.

Then, I checked the PSA population report for my card: 05318471
and boom!

3715 gem mint 10s!!!

Why the heck are they so expensive if there are so many of them???

Haha oh gosh… That’s alot of of 10s

Yeah I sell the sealed cd’s still with mint cards inside. Generally fall between $50-100 at auction for the whole set ungraded with cd.

The main value is in the three holos. Venusaur. Charizard blastoise. And if you break it up based off the cost of psa grading
your doing good at $25. Don’t know if you can get much cheaper. would be nice. And may fall under the radar. But it’s still a super popular artwork and card. Hence why it holds value. I get asked often for the English version if this venusaur…

I believe the reason these have so many in the POP report is because early Pokemon investors like @garyis2000 would buy and grade these en masse and then sell them on shopping television channels. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong though Gary. No other Pokemon card has this insane level in the population. Its why they’re so cheap (for a 10) and easy to come by. But just because there are a ton in the pop report doesn’t mean its any less of an amazing card!

I believe Gary and another individual did a massive purchase/grade/sale with the cd promos. IIRC they were listed on QVC.

I agree. Despite the high population, it is still an amazing card. My favorite card of the month for sure.
Now I want Blastoise and Charizard.

Right. It was a tough investment at the time that worked out quite well. The American frenzy really helped;)
One negative though. Media Factory was pissed and cancelled what would have been a very lucrative deal with the Birthday Pikach’s w/ Calendars.

Gotta love the cd promos, they were one of my first purchases when I got back into collecting last year. Is it true that there is no way to differentiate between the arc arcanine from this and the Toyota folder one as well as the porygon/snorlax from their other release?

Ps this avatar is mine :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d never heard the story of those being sold on QVC. I love it! Wish I could find an old video clip of that sales pitch! How much did they go for?

I’m on the hunt for a Venusaur in PSA 10 hopefully with the new style cases. If you have one or see one, please PM or post on the GAT =)

@ozenigma I prefer new clean/ holo cases too. Do you think it is worth it to do PSA reholder service. I’m new to PSA stuff. Someone help. @smpratte @garyis2000

So, I am on a hunt to get all three CD promo Venusaur/ Charizard/ Blastoise PSA 10.

I can get this PSA 10 Blastoise for $20 + $3 shipping. But the case is pretty beaten up, and the seller has almost no feedback.
Do you think it is worth $23? Also, is it a good idea to do reholder service to get a new case?? Can you submit it together with your grading submissions??

It’s not going to be much cheaper then that, if you can get it cheaper at all. Personally I don’t think $30 is a bad price either, which is what it’ll cost after a new case minus PSA shipping.

If all you want is a new case then yes the reholder service is the best option. Yes you can submit together, but they will be shipped back to you on different dates, I’m pretty sure. You need two submissions in the package, one for the cards getting graded, the other for the reholder.

If you’re good at judging cards you might even consider cracking the card out of the case and submitting them together if you’re positive it’s a high 10 grade with virtually no chance of getting a lower grade. The only reason I say this is it’ll allow you to combine the shipping costs together and allow you to use a Special service PSA offers which is cheaper then the reholder service. I personally wouldn’t do this as the cost difference isn’t great enough for me, and I personally like lower pop numbers.

@cullers Thanks a lot. That’s very helpful!

I don’t know if it is just me, but the top right corner looks frayed.

Hey mate! It might be a good idea to keep your two topics as one as they are on the same subject

Thanks for merging them. I’ll keep that in mind.

Hi everyone. I’m pleased to announce a small milestone in my humble collecting career: 3 CD Promos starters in GEM MT 10.

The cases show wear because of their age and previous mishandling. I cleaned them and put them in Perfect Fit sleeves. I will get these cards a new case one day.

Thanks to everyone and @cullers who gave me advice. I got Venusaur and Blastoise for around $25 each, and Charizard for $40 shipped.

P.S : Should I make a collection thread or is it too early??

My next goal is to complete non-PSA Legendary Collection Rev. Foil Complete Set. I’m currently at about 75%.

Thanks for checking out my post.
