Not that rare and massively overvalued. I wouldn’t pay the asking price for those cards.

It’s against the rules to bump threads that are older than two months, but before this gets locked I just wanna say how hilarious it is from today’s perspective that OP asked ‘why the heck they are so expensive’ when they were 40 bucks at the time (according to OP).
To answer your question, they always have been and always will be awesome and highly iconic cards, no matter how big the pop report is.

I definitely got caught off guard by the post, until checking the date!
For reference though, the prices did go crazy; I got my set last year for roughly 50 USD.
