Hawaii Pop Con Event with Mitsuhira Arita - Jan 6 & 7, 2024

Ah thanks, ya I feel the issue with Golem is simply that it has a small head :joy: I guess its similar with blastoise, you dont see much of those signed as the longer head Pokemon like Charizard are usually a bit nicer.

For Arita’s limited you could have it addressed to any name or social media handle as long as it was “recognizable.” I think they were still avoiding things like Trainer, Collector, Mitsuhira, or Ash. For the limited option, you can also have the name in Japanese and choose to have signatures vertical or horizontal and you can request the placement of where the names and sketch are.

As for drying the card…I think it depends on your location due to the humidity and whatnot. But I’d say at the very least wait 5 minutes if not longer. For rarer cards people were waiting about 10-15 minutes on average. Oh and no matter what you do, never give Arita a card in a sleeve otherwise he will auto it and put it back in the sleeve immediately. That happened to someone at this event. The instructions are to give him the card without any penny sleeves and I think that’s a pet peeve when people don’t listen to him.

This one currently on ebay looks like the pen didn’t take to the surface at all. I’d be devastated. Mitsuhiro Arita Signed 2021 Pokemon #4 Charizard Holo AUTO PSA/DNA PSA 9 | eBay

Ah yes sometimes it may also be the pen that doesn’t want to connect well with the card. One autograph collector told me the newer cards are a bit different than the older ones when it comes to writing on. Also glossy or texture card like the old vending cards or the new textured foils dont work for all types of pens. That collector mentioned its good to test it out with your own pens prior just in case. Otherwise you’ll have to use whatever the artist has on hand and it may or may not work.

This card didn’t seem to like the pen either.

Modern nonholos are the worst in terms of ink sticking.

You can improve it using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser though  [cabal-level information]

That is some top level information right there!

That’s super useful info :+1:t3: I really like the Charizard sketch with the red flames so will take a photo example and most likely go with that for my sketch card

Just make sure that you bring a red pen just in case they don’t have any up there.

I think it looks awful. If I was an artist, I would sure as hell never sign over my own artwork. (or Sugimori’s Blastoise)

I saw that on instagram and met that guy this weekend. As an artist, I would agree with what @Dyl said and never intentionally draw on top of another piece of art in that manner. I’m not too sure if Arita was told to do that or what. I would have rather had him autograph on the left and right of the booster pack as there’s plenty of extra space that’s just yellow background. But I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder :man_shrugging:

Again, people can do whatever they want. If they are happy that’s all that matters. But personally I don’t see the point in getting Arita to sign an item that has nothing to do with him/his art.

yeah idk the back story behind the signature placements, but i agree that there are two perfectly open spots for signatures and neither were used.

It’s a nice squirtle sketch, but I personally can never get behind signing plastic

Clarifying question since I have never attended a signing event. Do they have all sorts of markers for the signature? I can imagine black and blue working for most cards, but what if the card itself is black, do they have a set of contrasting colors, or is it wise to carry your own?

Thanks and cheers!

Depends on the event. Sometimes artists in general have their own marker set but other times you will have to pay extra for them to use your personal markers.

At this event they had black, gold, and silver. If you wanted a different color, you had to provide your own pen. Luckily they didnt charge us for having Arita use our pens. You just had to present your pen when you hand him your cards and let him know you’d like him to use that pen.

This was my first autograph event and the most ridiculous thing I saw signed was those aliexpress knockoff gold bill and gold card by the guy who runs an entire local business here selling them. Arita was super confused and asked the guy what they were and the guy claimed he made them himself (a lie of course.) Not sure why Arita did not refuse to sign it other than he seemed tired / coughing a lot at that point…

Ive never heard of Arita refusing to sign anything. Ive seen alot of dumb items signed by him over the years like Funko pops and Sugimori art/cards.
